NA Takes Down Moon
Senior diver Andrew Doerfler set a pool record in winning the boys’ 1-meter diving competition, and four swimming relay teams also set pool records, as the North Allegheny swimming and diving teams swept a meet at Moon Area High School on Tuesday, January 20. The boys won 97-64, and the girls won 98-69.
For the boys, Doerfler took first place in diving with a score of 298.10, with junior Stephen Savchik finishing second and senior Jared Ziegler taking third. Among the swimmers, junior Gage Halle took two first-place finishes, winning the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:53.03 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:09.77. Other first-place finishers were freshman Mason Gonzalez in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.62); senior Greg Arnold in the 50-yard freestyle (22.38); senior Casey Melzer in the 100-yard butterfly (55.94); senior Max Staresinic in the 100-yard freestyle (50.50); junior Michael Struk in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.77); and senior Jake Krivacs in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.84). The 200-yard medley relay team of Arnold, Melzer, Gonzalez and sophomore Eben Krigger won with a pool-record time of 1:38.84, as did the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Arnold, Staresinic, Gonzalez and Krigger with a time of 1:28.26.
Among the girls, sophomore diver Maddie Mianzo finished first with 216.85 points. Senior Kayla Churman took two first-place finishes, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 25.49 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:28.86. Other first-place finishers were junior Erin Kuhn in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.41); sophomore Anna Verardi in the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.30); sophomore Lauren McGrath in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.73); junior Gianna Caputo in the 100-yard freestyle (56.34); freshman Kristine Mihm in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.43) and senior Jacquelyn Du in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.20). The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Du, McGrath and seniors Maggie Root and Morgan Soulia won with a pool-record time of 1:38.96, as did the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Soulia, Caputo, Du and McGrath with a time of 3:35.73.
