Tigers open home slate with sweep of Norwin

After a season opening Invitational at State College and a road meet on Monday at Fox Chapel, North Allegheny was finally able to compete in friendly waters as they hosted the Norwin Knights in Wexford.

With their depth and talent on display, the Tigers posted twelve sweeps in the swimming events before heading to exhibition swims, and swept the Knights, with the girls winning 100-72, and the boys 101-68.

With no Norwin divers to compete, the Tigers dove uncontested. Emily Dimond, Leah Maiolo and Maggie Lapina, 245.05, dove for the girls. On the boys side, Colin Metzger, Anthony Farrah, and Ethan Maravich, last year’s 3A WPIAL gold medalist who posted a score of 323.55.

In the 200 Medley Relays, the teams of Sophia Davidson, Emma Dietz, Evey Masztak and Sydney DeHainaut (1:55.46) and Zachary Totin, Landon Bolen, Alex Harbaugh, and Odin Hsu (1:38.24) were the night’s first winners.

In the first individual events, Kate Dudro (2:01.22) and Emmanuel Chu (1:47.99) finished first in the 200 freestyle. Chu’s time was a personal best. The winners in the 200 IM were Julia Tengowski (2:09.75) and Totin (2:03.01).

Freshman Aubrey Constable won the 50 free with a personal best time of (25.95). In the boys 50 free, Mason Shantz posted a winning time of (22.07), while Maravich came of the boards to finish in second, with a time of (22.63).

Tengowski posted her second win of the meet with a time of (59.41) in the 100 fly, with freshman Adam Quinet (55.56) winning for the boys.

In the girls 100 free, it was senior Eva Ogden touching first at (54.85). Freshman Peter Ross won on the boys side with a time of (51.10).

In the distance events, the 500 freestyle, it was senior Shelby Sundgren winning at (5:20.41). Junior Brendan Yatchenko finished first for the boys at (5:05.99).

The final 8 events were all exhibition races, all won by the Tigers.

200 Girls Freestyle Relay: Dudro, Dani Hinskon, Eva Zilinksi and Ogden.

200 Boys Freestyle Relay: Harbaugh, Hsu, Totin and Dylan Seiford.

100 Girls Backstroke: Masztak.

100 Boys Backstroke: Shantz.

100 Girls Breaststroke: Hinkson.

100 Boys Backstroke: Harbaugh.

400 Girls Freestyle Relay: Constable, Dietz, Dudro and Natalie Reubi.

400 Boys Freestyle Relay: Hsu, Seiford, Shantz and Chu.

The initial Wright Automotive Players of the Game were awarded as follows:

For the girls, junior Julia Tengowski, with wins in the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard butterfly races.

On the boys side, it was Ethan Maravich. Not only did the senior post a score of 323.55 in the diving event, his second-place finish time in the 50-yard freestyle was good enough to make the WPIAL qualifying cut time.

North Allegheny is back in the pool next Tuesday, when they host Upper St. Clair at 5:00PM. That meet will be carried on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
