The North Allegheny girls’ lacrosse team picked up an important section win with a 12-9 road victory at Seneca Valley on Monday night. The victory vaults the Tigers into fifth place in the Section 2-3A standings, one game ahead of the sixth-place Raiders. The top six teams in the section standings by season’s end qualify for the postseason.

The Tigers started out well with back-to-back goals from senior Laurel Donley and sophomore Avery Anderson for a quick 2-0 lead 2:02 into the game. However, Seneca Valley stormed back with five consecutive goals to grab a 5-2 lead with 14:47 left in the first half. On her way to a four-goal performance, junior middie Lorena Lopez tallied two goals during the Raiders’ run of goals.

Despite the early deficit, the Tigers fought back with five consecutive goals of their own to take a 7-5 lead into the locker room at halftime. Donley and senior Leigh Failla scored two goals each during the five-goal stretch, sandwiched around a goal by freshman Reagan Riordan. Donley finished the night with a hat trick, while Failla’s first two markers came off athletic interceptions by the senior attack.

In the second half, Seneca Valley netted three of the next four goals to tie the game at 8-8 with 14:13 remaining. Undaunted, North Allegheny scored four of the final five goals of the evening to earn a 12-9 victory. Failla scored two more goals in the second half to total a team-high four tallies, while also contributing four caused turnovers and three groundballs.

Sophomore Maddie Lemmon, senior Charlotte Schreiber and senior Delaney Kennedy also scored goals in the second half for the Tigers. An additional noteworthy performance was provided by senior Becka Oates on defense with five groundballs, two caused turnovers and an assist. In net, junior goalie Izzie Trunzo corralled 10 saves and four groundballs.

With the win, North Allegheny improves 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the Section 2-3A standings. Seneca Valley falls to 3-4 in the section. The Tigers hope to continue their winning ways on Wednesday night with a visit to Pine-Richland at 7:30.
