Tigers Stay Perfect With Sweep Of West Allegheny
Juniors Lauren McGrath, Eben Krigger and Max Gonzalez, and sophomore Mason Gonzalez, each won two individual events as the North Allegheny swimming and diving teams improved to 13-0 in WPIAL dual meets by sweeping West Allegheny on Thursday, February 11. The girls won 101-72, while the boys won 104-72.
McGrath won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.81 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:24.29. Other first-place finishers in individual events among the girls were senior Gianna Caputo in the 200-yard individual medley (2:13.92); sophomore Ann Juneau in the 50-yard freestyle (26.18); freshman Mary Liz Flavin in the 100-yard freestyle (55.76); junior Anna Verardi in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.10); and senior Erin Kuhn in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:09.07). In the relays, McGrath and Kuhn teamed with freshmen Olivia Laun and Lila McGrath to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:48.13, while Lauren McGrath and Caputo teamed with juniors Aimee Verardi and Caitlyn Edwards to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:42.85. The 200-yard medley relay also went to North Allegheny, with Edwards, Lila McGrath, senior Megan Christy and sophomore Serena Yan winning in 1:56.15. Junior Maddie Mianzo won the diving competition with a score of 236.10.
Among the boys, Krigger won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.25 and the 100-yard backstroke in 58.75, while Max Gonzalez won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:59.04 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:03.13. Meanwhile, Mason Gonzalez won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.76 and the 100-yard butterfly in 52.49. Other first-place finishers in individual events among the boys were sophomore Andrew Zhang in the 100-yard freestyle (50.18) and freshman Jerry Chen in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.46). In the relays, Zhang, senior Colin MacDonald, freshman Jack Wright, and junior Eric Staab won the 400-yard medley relay in 1:43.92, while Zhang and the Gonzalez brothers teamed with senior Michael Struk to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:29.79. The 400-yard freestyle relay also went to North Allegheny, with Struk, sophomore Matt Kuhn, freshman John Ehling and junior Tom McCaffrey winning in 3:30.76. Senior Stephen Savchik won the diving competition with a score of 211.10.
