Tigers Top Tribe For Big Section Win, 2-1

Posted on:

Entering Thursday night, Peters Township had gone seven consecutive games without a loss to North Allegheny, going 6-0-1 in that span. However, the Tigers snapped the Indians’ head-to-head unbeaten streak with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Newman Stadium.

After scoring three late goals to bedevil the Blue Devils of Mt. Lebanon earlier in the week, North Allegheny stormed out of the gates in the first quarter against Peters Township. Junior Isla Abrams scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead with 5:29 on the first quarter clock.

In the second quarter, Abrams set up another goal and assisted on junior Sophie Grafton’s marker with 4:46 left in the half for a 2-0 lead. With one goal and one assist, Abrams was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

Peters Township fought back in the second half and cut the NA lead to 2-1 with 7:46 remaining in the third quarter on a goal by sophomore Serafina Forlini.

While the Indians seemed to be gaining momentum, the NA back line of Leah Mouganis, Abby Hershberger and Haley Shanahan provided stellar defense to help preserve the one-goal lead in the remaining minutes. Senior goalie Jordan Ashbaugh made five saves as the Tigers prevailed, 2-1, for an important early-season section win in Class AAA.

North Allegheny improves to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in Section 1-AAA, while Peters Township falls to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in section play. The Tigers will host Class AA power Penn-Trafford at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
