North Allegheny sophomore William Gao has been selected by USA Swimming to attend the National Diversity Select Camp for 2022. Gao is one of 52 swimmers in the nation selected to the camp, which will take place on May 5-8 at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

This past season, Gao was an instrumental piece to North Allegheny’s effort in capturing third place at the WPIAL championships. He earned bronze in the 100 Backstroke and took sixth place in the 200IM. Gao was also part of the 200 Free Relay team that garnered fourth place at WPIALs. At states, Gao was 12th in the 200IM and 100 Backstroke, and aided the 200 Free Relay to a 13th-place showing. Gao helped the NA Boys finish 19th out of 55 teams at the PIAA championships.

At the USA Swimming National Diversity Select Camp, Gao will be among athletes between the ages of 14 and 16. Selection to the camp was based on times performed at USA Swimming sanctioned meets.

USA Swimming states that the camp serves the purpose to “instill a vision of success and inspire athletes from ethnically under-represented populations to become leaders in the sport of swimming.” Some past participants include 2020 Tokyo Olympians Torri Huske, Simone Manuel, Jay Litherland, and Natalie Hinds.
