TIGERS END SEASON ON A WINNING NOTE WITH 1-0 VICTORY OVER NORTH HILLS

Coach Bruno Schwarz's Tigers defeated North Hills, 1-0, at Martorelli Stadium on Tuesday night to complete a tough season with a victory over their archrivals.   It was a difficult night for a game with rain, storms, and wind.  The game was delayed twice due to lightning.  On a night that recognized the North Hills seniors, the officials perservered and managed to complete the game.

Due to the inclement weather, it looked like it would be a wide open, high-scoring game.  In fact, both teams played for territorial advantage, trying to get the ball into the attacking half of the field as quickly as possible.  In spite of numerous good scoring opportunities, there was only one goal scored.  Just 27 seconds into the game, a North Hills defender accidentally passed the ball into his own goal.  There was some miscommunication between the defense and NH goalkeeper, and it resulted in the winning goal.

For the Tigers, senior GK Devin Hale was excellent in goal and made a number of great saves to keep the Tigers in the lead.  According to Coach Schwarz, "Devin Hale was our most consistent player this year, and the player of the match."  Senior stopper Garrett Simmer also had a strong game.  Simmer won a number of head balls and 50/50 duels at midfield.

Coach Schwarz started all nine seniors in their farewell game.  North Hills Coach Sal Marsico started all eleven of his seniors as the season came to an end for both teams.  The Tigers finished in sixth place with a section record of 3-9-2 and an overall mark of 6-12-2.  North Hills ended up in seventh place with marks of 2-11-1 and 4-13-1.

TIGERS DEFEAT KNOCH, 3-2, TO END LONG WINLESS STREAK

The Tigers traveled to Knoch on Thursday night and came home with a 3-2 victory to break a six-game winless streak.  After a 0-0 tie at halftime, the Tigers "exploded" for three goals in the second half to down the Knights.  Knoch had edged NA, 2-1, at Newman Stadium earlier in the season.

Junior MF Brandon Flaherty opened the scoring at the 9:04 mark of the second half after a corner kick by junior MF Derek Foy was headed into the penalty area by junior Ryan Honsaker.  Knoch came right back to equalize, however, when forward Erik Husselton scored.  The Tigers regained the lead when Foy set up sophomore Kevin Kearney with a perfect pass at the top of the penalty area.  Kearney then drilled the ball past the Knight keeper to give NA a 2-1 advantage at the 26:15 mark.  The Knights came back again to tie the score when the NA defense turned the ball over in their own end.

The Tigers were not finished, however, and scored again to take the lead.  Just one minute later, with the Tigers pressing in the offensive end, sophomore Justin Runkel scored the game winner when he chipped the ball over the head of the keeper to give NA a 3-2 lead with just eleven minutes left in the game.  NA was able to hold on and win their second section game of the year.  According to Coach Schwarz, "The Tigers showed some spunk, spirit and determination and were not to be denied".

With the victory, the Tigers' improved their record to 2-9-2 in section play and 5-11-2 overall.  NA will travel to Mt. Lebanon tomorrow night for an 8:30 pm non-section game.  The Tigers will conclude their season with a final section game at North Hills on Tuesday night.  Game time is set for 7:30 pm.

HAMPTON DEFEATS TIGERS, 3-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

On Senior Night, where the temperatures dipped and the rain fell at Newman Stadium, the Hampton Talbots defeated the Tigers, 3-0.  Junior forward Jed Cordisco did most of the damage scoring a pair of goals and assisting on another as Hampton scored all three goals in the first half.  The Tiger defense regrouped in the second half, but NA was unable to score.

In the first half, Hampton asserted control early in the game.  Junior midfielder Steve Flatley had a chance just a little over a minute into the game, but senior NA goalkeeper Devin Hale came up with a big save.  Just minutes later at the 36:26 mark, Cordisco's shot went over the goal.  A minute and 25 seconds later, Cordisco came in alone from the right side and blasted a shot that Hale got a piece of but could not keep out of the net as Hampton took a 1-0 lead.

The NA defense was able to keep Hampton from scoring for the next twenty minutes, but the Talbots had chances.  Cordisco shot wide with 27:58 left, and Hale made another good save on senior Ryan Roethlein at the 23:59 mark.  Cordisco got loose again with 13:51 remaining, but his shot hit the side of the net.  A minute later, the Tiger defenders pulled Cordisco down in the penalty area.  Hale came up big on the penalty shot as he dove to his right and made an outstanding save to keep the score at 1-0.  The Tigers showed live after the save as they had a corner kick with 11:32 left in the half.  Senior MF Keith Miller's cross was intended for senior forward Dan Sebastian, but was headed away at the last second.  Miller got another chance just twenty seconds later but his shot went wide.

In the waning moments of the first half, the Talbots put the game away.  With 9:30 on the clock, Cordisco once again got loose on the left side.  The Talbot forward sent a perfect pass to junior Billy Banks who scored easily to make it 2-0.  Finally, with just 1:15 remaining, junior MF Billy Winters sent a corner kick high to the far post where Cordisco headed it into the net for his second goal.  Hampton took a 3-0 advantage to the intermission.

The Tiger defense played much better in the second half and kept Hampton from scoring again.  Early in the half, however, Cordisco had another attempt forcing  Hale to make a tough save.  NA had their best chance at the 35:44 mark when junior Derek Foy tried for the right corner, but junior GK Patrick Finnegan made a diving stop to keep NA scoreless.  Junior Sean Regan broke in from the right side at the 32:01 mark, but Hale again came up big.

Hampton pulled back the pressure for most of the second half, being content to keep NA from penetrating.  The Tigers did get several chances, however.  With 21:16 left, the Tigers pressured the ball in the box, and senior Hampton defender Mike Spear almost put the ball in his own goal.  Sophomore Kevin Kearney forced Finnegan to make a good save on his shot from just inside the 18 at the 19:21 mark.  For the remainder of the half, the Hampton defense was too much for the Tigers, and the Talbots earned a 3-0 victory.

The loss dropped the NA record to 1-8-2 in section play, 4-10-2 overall.  The North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior defender Sean Cunningham as the Player of the Game for his consistent play in the back.  The Tigers will finish the season on the road beginning next Tuesday with a trip to Pine-Richland.  Game time is set for 7:30 pm.

SHALER TOO TOUGH FOR TIGERS, 4-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior Nick Christy scored a pair of goals and seniors Dante Cincotta and Chris Watts added a goal each as first-place Shaler defeated the Tigers, 4-0, at Newman Stadium on Thursday night.  The Titans built a 3-0 halftime lead and dominated play for most of the game.

In the first half, Shaler started quickly and kept the ball in NA territory from the opening kickoff.  Senior MF Adam Karlowich hit the right post at the 37:38 mark.  Christy scored his first goal on a pass from Karlowich with 31:13 remaining and the Titans had a 1-0 lead.  Cincotta blasted a shot from 25 yards out into the left corner of the net to give SA a 2-0 advantage just two minutes later.

After sophomore Nick Simakas shot high over the crossbar with 26:58 remaining, the Tigers regrouped and played better defense.  Christy did have a chance with 20:37 left, but his shot went wide.  The Tigers had an opportunity when junior Ryan Honsaker broke loose in the box, but his diving attempt to get a foot on a pass from junior MF Brendan Flaherty just missed at the 18:45 mark.  Christy had another chance but shot high and wide with 14:20 left.  The Titan senior forward did finish about eight minutes later with a great individual effort.  Christy got the ball outside the box, moved to the 18, faked right and shot left into the corner to give the Titans a 3-0 lead that they carried to the intermission.

In the second half, the Tigers came out more aggressively on defense and were able to stymie the Shaler attack for most of the half.  The Titans, however, did have chances.  Senior MF Jason Zielinski shot wide from close range at the 37:50 mark.  After Karlowitz missed wide left, Zielinski hit the right post with the ball rolling along the NA goal line before the Tigers could clear.

The Tigers came back to threaten with 28:20 remaining when senior forward Rob Kurtanich got loose just outside the box, but his shot went wide left.  Shaler backed off for the remainder of the half, but junior Jerry Dickinson had a chance when his shot hit the outside of the net with 8:55 left.  Christy had an opportunity for the hat trick at the 7:42 marked but was robbed by senior Tiger keeper Devin Hale from right in front of the goal.

The Tigers showed some live after the save.  Senior Garrett Simmer's shot from 40 yards was saved by Shaler GK Dylan Dluhos.  Junior Chad King got off a strong shot from 18 yards by Dluhos caught it with 3:20 remaining.  Shaler got one last goal from senior Chris Watts on a pass from Cincotta to make it 4-0 with just 1:38 left.  NA had their best chance when time was running out, but sophomore Ryan Croker's shot from right in front of the Shaler net went over the goal.

Shaler showed why they are the #2 ranked team in the WPIAL.  With ball control, excellent passing, and good finishing, they will hard to beat in the playoffs.  For the Tigers, it was a good effort against a good team.  The North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior Rob Kurtanich as the Player of the Game for his desire and never-say-die play, even when the Tigers dropped behind.  The Tigers will travel to Seneca Valley tomorrow night for another section battle.  Game time is scheduled for 8:00 pm.

TIGERS, NORTH HILLS BATTLE TO 0-0 TIE

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

In a physical game at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night, the Tigers and the North Hills Indians fought through two regulation halves and two ten-minute overtime periods without scoring as the contest ended in a 0-0 tie.  Both teams had opportunities but strong defense and outstanding play by the goalkeepers kept the ball out of the net.

The Indians came close to scoring in the first 30 seconds of the game.  After driving the ball deep into the NA end after the opening kickoff, senior Chris Ebbert blasted the ball off an NA defender, got the rebound, and was stopped by Tiger keeper Devin Hale.  Neither team was able to mount much of a threat in the early going after the first chance.  With 22:51 remaining, NH defender Ryan Kemp got off a strong shot from the 18, but Hale made a diving save to keep the ball out of the right corner.

The Tigers had several chances later in the half.  Sophomore Kevin Kearney had his attempt go wide with 17:40 remaining, while senior MF Dan Sebastian's strong shot from 35 yards out was stopped by Indians' GK John Bauer.  With 3:52 left, junior Ryan Honsaker got off a turning shot but Bauer caught the attempt on one hop.  The teams went to the intermission scoreless.

In the second half, North Hills turned up the pressure, but the Tiger defense was able to withstand the NH attack.  Early in the half, Ebbert put the ball in the net but was offside.  Minutes later, senior MF Kraig Bruder got off a good shot from 20 yards, but Hale was there to make the save.  NA got a chance at the 14:23 mark when junior Brad Lutz's header was stopped by Bauer.  With 12:00 minutes remaining in the half, junior MF Derek Foy had a chance from 25 yards but again Bauer made the stop.

North Hills had two great chances with just under 10:00 on the clock.  Ebbert broke loose on the left side and got off a shot, but the Tiger defense got a piece of the ball to send it wide.  The best scoring opportunity of the game came with 9:14 left in the half.  The Indians mounted a flurry getting off several shots that Hale stopped.  The last rebound, however, came to a wide open Kemp, about eight yards away, but his shot went just over the crossbar.  At the other end, Honsaker had a chance to give NA the win, but his shot also went over the bar.  Regulation time ended with a scoreless tie.

In the first overtime, both teams played cautiously with few scoring chances developing.  With 2:10 left, Ebbert set up Kemp with a good opportunity, but Hale saved the ball and the game for NA.  In the second overtime, Bruder had two chances.  With 9:19 left, Hale again came up big with a diving save.  At the 4:45 mark, Bruder's strong shot went over the goal.  North Hills gave it one last try, but Ebbert's rolling cross was deflected by Hale with just 9 seconds on the clock.

It was a typical NA-NH contest with both teams picking up a number of fouls because of the physical play.  No cards were issued but the play was intense.  The Tigers section record dropped to 1-5-1 after the tie, while their overall mark stands at 4-7-1.  For his outstanding play in front of the NA goal, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Devin Hale as the Player of the Game.  The Tigers will be back in action tonight when they host the Shaler Titans at Newman Stadium.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:30 pm.

TIGERS NIP AMBRIDGE, 1-0, TO END SKID

Coach Bruno Schwarz' Tigers bounced back after losing three in a row to defeat Ambridge, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Newman Stadium.  Sophomore Andy Martin, making his first varsity start, scored the winning goal in the 33rd minute of the first half.  Ambridge was ranked 6th in Class AA and undefeated in section play.

The Tigers controlled most of the first half with good combination play resulting in possession.  On the goal, NA had strung six passes together beginning with the buildup in the defensive end.  Senior Robbie Kurtanich made a diagonal penetrating pass to Martin who beat the GK low to the far side.  Coach Schwarz said, "It was the spark that NA needed!"

The Tigers featured a "new look" at midfield as juniors Derek Foy and Brendan Flaherty complemented each other and gave NA good midfield play.  Coach Schwarz went to Martin and freshman Nick Severyn, making their first varsity appearance, on the flanks, with Foy and Flaherty at central MF "in order to improve possession and spark the offense", according to the Tiger mentor.

Junior Andrew Jones made four saves in recording his first varsity win and first shutout as the NA keeper.  The Tigers will host rival North Hills tomorrow night and first-place Shaler on Thursday night.  Both games will be broadcast LIVE on the North Allegheny Sports Network.  Be sure to join Don Vandergrift and Jordan Dee for all the action, live or archived.  The pre-game show will begin at 7:30 pm with the opening kickoffs scheduled for 7:45 pm.

TOUGH SEASON CONTINUES FOR TIGERS AS THEY FALL TO KNOCH, 2-1

"On a dark and gloomy night at Newman Stadium," Knoch forward Eric Husselton scored his second goal of the game midway through the second half to give the Knights a 2-1 victory over the Tigers at Newman Stadium on Thursday night.  The Tigers started out strong, controlling the ball and looking to take an early lead.  The offense could not score, however, and with 14 seconds left in the half, the Knights mounted a counter attack with Husselton scoring.  The teams went to the dressing room with Knoch holding a 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, junior Derek Foy moved into the midfield and gave the Tiger offense a spark.  At the seven minute mark, NA got the equalizer when junior Ryan Honsaker sent a cross into the penalty area and sophomore Kevin Kearney converted to tie the score at 1-1.  The goal seemed to energize NA, but the Knights again countered with Husselton scoring to give Knoch a 2-1 lead.  The Tigers tried desperately to equalize but time ran out.

Once again, the Tigers defense played well, but NA came up short.  Coach Bruno Schwarz commented, "A low point of the season...very disappointing!"  The loss dropped the NA section record to 1-5, the overall mark to 3-7.  On a promising note, Coach Schwarz feels that the team is improving and will earn good results in the second half of the season.

Tomorrow, the Tigers will host "Soccerfest 2003".  Four games will be played at Newman Stadium beginning with the varsity contest against the Ambridge Bridgers at 12:00 noon.  The JV game against Ambridge will follow at 1:30 pm.  NA Black will take on Pine-Richland at 3:00 pm while the NA Gold squad will face Pine-Richland in a 4:30 pm start.

PINE-RICHLAND TOPS TIGERS, 2-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Despite playing a good defensive game, the Tigers dropped a 2-0 decision to the #2-ranked Pine-Richland Rams at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Seniors Evan Picard and Randy Smith scored goals as the Rams improved their record to 7-0-1.  The Tigers fell to 3-6 on the season.

Neither team was able to score in the early going, but there were opportunities.  Ram senior Brandon Sullivan got in close but his shot went over the goal at the 37:30 mark.  Less than a minute later, Tiger junior Ryan Honsaker was able to get open but his attempt was high and over the goal.  The Rams got two more chances before they scored.  Senior Ran Badaracco shot wide with 29:40 left, and junior Ryan Ulbrich got loose on a breakaway but NA senior GK Devin Hale made a diving save to keep the game scoreless.

The Rams finally broke through at the midway point of the half.  Senior leading scorer Evan Picard made a brilliant run through the Tiger defense, starting left, turning, and coming back to his right.  Picard then turned and placed a perfect shot just inside the left post and the Rams took a 1-0 lead.  The Tigers had several opportunities to tie before the intermission.  Junior F Steve Hucko’s turning shot was saved by Ram GK Nick Faijt at the 7:50 mark, and senior defender Aaron Wynkoop’s attempt was also stopped by Faijt with only 4:02 remaining.  The teams went to the dressing rooms, however, with no further scoring.

The second half saw the Rams spend most of their time defending the 1-0 advantage.  The Tigers got an early scoring opportunity, but senior MF Keith Miller’s header went wide just a little over a minute into the half.  Hale came up big on two occasions to keep the lead at one.  With 33:12 remaining, the Tiger keeper made a big save on a shot by Ulbrich from the right side.  Later, Picard got loose from NA senior defender Brian Braun for one of the few times in the game, but Hale was able to make the save.

The best chance the Tigers had to equalize came at the 20:15 mark when Honsaker’s rebound attempt went just wide of the goal.  Sophomore Kevin Kearney got off another good shot at the 12:02 mark, but it was wide of the mark.  The Rams put the game out of reach with 2:26 remaining.  Picard broke down the right side and sent a perfect pass to senior Randy Smith in front of the NA goal.  Smith drilled it home to give Pine-Richland a 2-0 lead and the victory.

The Tigers played good defense against a very good Pine-Richland team but were unable to score.  Because of his tenacious play in marking one of the top scorers in the WPIAL, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior Brian Braun as the Player of the Game.  The Tigers will be back in action this evening when they host the Knoch Knights in a section contest.  Game time is set for 7:45 at Newman Stadium.

WPIAL BOYS' SOCCER - 2003

The Tigers will compete again in Class AAA, along with 37 other teams this year.  The top three teams and ties will enter the WPIAL tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section win/lost record.  Ties will be broken by the following method:  two points for a win, one point for a tie, minus one point for a loss.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and both will be declared co-champions and each will receive a section winner's plaque.  Those two teams will enter the tournament and the second place team will enter as the third section representative.  In the event of a tie for second or third place, the tie breaker system will be employed.  If a tie persists, head to head competition will determine the qualifier.  In the event of a multiple tie the following tie breaker will be employed:

     1.    Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
     2.    The team that has the best numerical record among the tied teams will be the qualifier.
     3.    If the tie cannot be clearly broken, all tied teams will enter the tournament.

Each game will consist of two equal halves of 40 minutes each.  If a regular season game (exhibition or section) ends in a tie, two ten minute overtime periods will be played.  If a tie persists at that point, the game is over and is recorded as a tie.  In post-season play, the procedure to determine a game winner will be the state adopted method of the National Federation soccer rules book.

PIAA qualifiers - five AAA teams will qualify for the state championship bracket on a follow-the-winner basis.

Players and coaches who receive hard red cards and are disqualified from any game by the game official, will not be permitted to participate in the next scheduled game played by their team at the same level of competition.  Repeated red card offenders will be subjected to more severe penalties.
