LADY TIGERS SHUT OUT NORTH HILLS, 3-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Coach Chet Gapczynski's Lady Tigers controlled play against their archrival North Hills at Newman Stadium on Monday night and posted a 3-0 victory.  Junior MF Grace Chao's goal gave NA a 1-0 lead at halftime with goals by sophomore Jordan Gapczynski and junior Jess Eckert in the second half putting the game away.

The Lady Tigers started strong, pressuring the North Hills goal in the early going.  At the 33:00 minute mark, Gapczynski got loose in the penalty area, but her shot was wide to the right.  Just moments later, Chao put a header right to North Hills GK Caitlin Trant who made the save.  With 31:19 left in the half, the pressure paid off.  Chao was in position in front of the goal and blasted a rebound past Trant to give NA a 1-0 advantage.

Although NA continued to pressure the Indians, they were unable to score again in the half.  North Hills came back later in the half with some opportunities.  Sophomore Nicole Greenwald shot wide with 23:05 remaining.  With 4:05 left in the half, sophomore Katrin Fabian got off a strong shot just to the right of the NA goal, but Tiger junior GK Leann Kania made an outstanding save to keep NA in the lead as the teams went to the intermission.

Early in the second half, the Lady Tigers again began to pressure the NH goal.  Senior defender Kristin Martin shot just wide of the goal from thirty yards out just 50 seconds into the half.  A minute later, junior defender Laura Steidel had a chance in front of the goal, but her shot was blocked.  With 16:39 remaining, Steidel hit the cross bar with a strong shot from 35 yards away, and, just seconds later, junior MF Lauren Sarnowski put the ball over the NH goal.

The Lady Tigers finally scored with 15:34 on the second half clock.  Gapczynski took the ball just beyond the 18, faked to her right, dribbled around another NH player, and put a perfectly placed shot into the right corner of the net to give NA a 2-0 lead.  It was the play of the game!  NA continued to pressure the Indian goal as junior forward Mary Dubois tried to go high on Trant, but the NH keeper was able to just tip the ball over the goal with just 8:55 remaining.  Another series of Tiger shots produced a third goal when Eckert picked up the rebound at the right post and rolled it behind Trant.  The NA defense held North Hills off the board for the remainder of the game, and the Lady Tigers had a 3-0 victory.

The NA defense played well in front of Kania, with junior Kelly Connelly, junior Amy Toler, Martin and Steidel leading the way.  For her efforts, both defensively and offensively, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Jordan Gapczynski as the Player of the Game.

The win gave the Lady Tigers a final section record of 7-5, good for fourth place in Section 2.  The overall mark improved to 10-8-1 with just one game left.

JV UPDATE:  NA rolled to a 6-0 win, started off with a quick hat trick by Jackie Givens.  She got in behind the defense 3 times in the first ten minutes and dribbled right in to make perfectly placed shots.  The assists went to Allie Buysee, Melia Muckle, and Kelly Langhans, respectively.  Buysse then got a goal of her own on a nice shot inside the far post to close out the first half, assisted by Emily Guzzetti on a give and go.

Alex Falvo then beautifully chipped a shot over the oncoming goalkeeper to increase the lead to 5-0 early in the second half.  Then, Kellie Cope finished things off with a one-time volley in front of a strong cross.  shannon Fusina and Langhans provided the helpers on these goals.

Because of the unfortunate weather and thus cancellation of the Penn Hills/Senior Rec game, the girls JV season ends with an 11-3-2 record unless they make up an earlier game against Peters Township.  Congratulations on a great season, girls! - Coach Weet

BUTLER EDGES NA, 1-0

The first-place Butler Golden Tornado defeated the Lady Tigers, 1-0, at Newman Stadium on Monday night.  After some confusion in front of the NA net, Elise McCaskey scored with eleven minutes remaining in the first half for the only goal of the game.

Overall, the Lady Tigers played the #2-ranked Tornado evenly up and down the field, but could not score the equalizer.  Junior Laura Steidel did an outstanding job of marking All-WPIAL midfielder Annie Lawry.  The NA defense played a strong game, also, led by juniors Kelly Connelly and Lisa Sarnowski, along with senior Kristen Martin.  Junior GK Leann Kania came up big for the Lady Tigers.  Assisting with the defensive effort were junior Amy Toler and freshman Kelly Langhans.

The loss dropped the NA section record to 6-4 and the overall mark to 9-6-1.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Fox Chapel for a crucial section contest tonight.  Game time is set for 7:30 pm.

JV UPDATE:  The JV earned their most satisfying victory over Butler, 2-0, by scoring two late second half goals to break open a 0-0 deadlock.  Jackie Givens had the first on a breathtaking breakaway made possible by a lead pass from Sarah Janosik.  Then, Janosik scored one of her own on a perfectly timed, smashing right footed volley set up by Kelly Langhans' corner kick.  Earlier in the game, Langhans used her tremendous speed and determination to clear a potential Butler goal off the line with a desperate sprint.  GK Morgan Campbell took charge in the net to get the shutout./BW

SENECA VALLEY TOPS LADY TIGERS, 3-1

The Seneca Valley Raiders avenged an earlier loss to the Lady Tigers with a 3-1 victory over NA at the Seneca Valley soccer field on Monday night.  The Raiders broke on top early and built a 2-0 lead by halftime.

NA played desperate soccer in the second half and finally cut the deficit to 2-1 midway through the period.  Junior Lauren Sarnowski scored the goal on a one-timed volley in front, created by a perfect serve by junior Grace Chao.  The Lady Tigers continued to apply pressure, but Seneca scored the insurance goal with five minutes remaining to seal a 3-1 win.

HUGHES' HAT TRICK SPARKS LADY TIGERS OVER SHALER, 3-2

The Lady Tigers defeated Shaler, 3-2, on Friday evening as NA continued their playoff push in section competition.  Senior Ashley Hughes scored all three goals as NA came from behind to earn the victory.  Junior Stephanie Maloney had a pair of assists while freshman Leigh Cullen added the other helper for the winning Lady Tigers.

Trailing 2-1 at the half, NA came back to win.  With the scored tied at 2-2, Hughes sllipped in behind the defense, trapped a serve in front of the net, and buried the shot in the side panel with her left foot.   Strong play by the Tiger defense kept Shaler from scoring throughout the second half.

The NA section record improved to 5-2 and their overall mark to 8-4.    The Lady Tigers travel to Seneca Valley tonight for an important section contest.  NA defeated the Raiders, 2-1, at Newman Stadium earlier in the season.  Game time is set for 7:30 pm.

JV UPDATE:  In JV action, the girls earned a 1-0 victory.  The goal was a work of art, as Emily guzzetti ofted a long ball to a breaking Kellie Cope, who burst by the defense.  She carried the ball at an angle toward the goal, drew the keeper off her lline, and slid the ball squarely across the box to Jackie Givens who finished the play with a carefully spotted right-footed shot.  The defense of Kelly Langhans, Melia Muckle, Jillian Reilly, Michelle Sauer, Nicole Vetere, and Nicole Orlosky earned the shutout, but not without several key saves by goalkeeper Morgan Campbell./BW

Junior Tricia Patsilevas got NA off and running in the first half to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead.  Thanks to good defensive play by the North Hills back line, the teams went to the intermission with NA holding the one-goal lead.

In the second half, junior Stephanie Maloney scored the first of her two goals as the Lady Tigers move to a 2-0 lead.  Junior Mary Dubois scored an insurance goal on a strong shot to make it 3-0.  Maloney then put the finishing touch on the game with her second goal.  It was the second straight two-goal game for the NA striker.  Senior Ashley Hughes and sophomore Mollie Rosenzweig had two assists in the victory.

FOX CHAPEL NIPS LADY TIGERS, 1-0, IN OVERTIME

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Junior Molly McLaughlin scored with 4:39 remaining in the second overtime period to give Fox Chapel a 1-0 victory over the Lady Tigers at Newman Stadium on Wednesday night.  NA played an impressive defensive game against the Foxes but could not score.  The loss dropped the NA section record to 3-2, the overall mark to 5-4.

After neither team threatened in the early going, sophomore midfielder Caitlett Langett had the game's first scoring chance, but her shot went high at the 24:19 mark.  Sophomore Molly Linhart, who had a great game for the Foxes, was stopped by NA junior goalkeeper Leann Kania with 13:20 remaining as the game remained scoreless.  The best Lady Tiger chance game with 8:40 left when junior forward Stephanie Maloney shot the ball high over the net.

The Foxes turned the pressure on in the last five minutes of the half.  With 5:21 left, a corner kick was deflected off the crossbar.  With 2:33 on the clock, sophomore Lindsey Miller hit the left post, and senior Christa Salerno's long attempt hit the top of the crossbar just seconds later.  NA survived the onslaught and the teams went to the dressing room scoreless.

Fox Chapel had two opportunities in the early part of the second half.  Senior Becca Aiken's header went wide at the 35:27 mark, and Linhart just missed to the left of the NA goal with 29:05 left.  The Lady Tigers had a great chance to take the lead, but junior MF Grace Chao's attempt went over the crossbar at the 21:44 mark.

The Foxes continued to pressure NA and got three more scoring opportunities. With 15:40 left, Kania made a diving stop on a breakaway by Miller.  Minutes later, Kania was able to pick up a loose ball in the box.  With 11:15 left, Kania made a save against the left post and the rebound rolled along the NA goal line before Kania was able to collect it.  NA came back to threaten, but sophomore Mollie Rosenzweig had her shot from 25 yards out go just wide to the right.  The biggest chance for the Foxes came with 4:40 remaining off a corner kick.  The Foxes had three straight attempts, the first stopped by an NA defender on the goal line, the second by Kania from point blank range, and the third stopped and cleared by senior defender Kristen Martin.

In the first overtime, the Lady Tigers had the territorial advantage but could not pick up the game winner.  Junior Mary Dubois had a chance just 30 seconds into OT, but senior GK Emily Niman made the save.  In the second overtime period, Linhart's shot went wide with 7:12 left.  With five minutes remaining, however, the Foxes won the ball at midfield and sent McLaughlin down the left side, and she tallied the game winner on a great shot into the right corner.

It was a disappointing loss for NA after a great effort.  Fox Chapel moved ahead of NA in the section standings with a 3-1-1 record while NA dropped to 3-2.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected junior GK Leann Kania as the Player of the Game.  The Lady Tigers will be back in action again on Saturday when they travel to Springdale for an 11:00 am non-section contest.

WPIAL GIRLS' SOCCER - 2003

The Lady Tigers will compete in Class AAA, along with 52 other teams this year.  The top three teams and ties will enter the WPIAL tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best win/lost record.  Ties will be broken by the following method:  two points for a win, one point for a tie, minus one point for a loss.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and both will be declared co-champions and each will receive a section winner's plaque.  Those two teams will enter the tournament and the second place team will enter as the third section representative.  In the event of a tie for second or third place, the tie breaker system will be employed.  If a tie persists, head to head competition will determine the qualifier.  In the event of a multiple tie the following tie breaker will be employed:

     1.  Section records of the tied teams will be compiled.
     2.  The team that has the best numerical record among the tied teams will be the qualifier.
     3.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter the tournament.

Each game will consist of two equal halves of 40 minutes each.  If a regular season game (exhibition or section) ends in a tie, two ten minute overtime periods will be played.  If a tie persists at that point, the game is over and is recorded as a tie.  In post-season play, the procedure to determine a game winner will be the state adopted method of the National Federation soccer rules book.

PIAA qualifier - four girls teams will advance to the state championship bracket on the follow-the-winner basis.

Players and coaches who receive hard red cards and are disqualified from any game by the game official, will not be permitted to participate in the next scheduled game played by their team at the same level of competition.  Repeated red card offenders will be subjected to more severe penalties.
