The Seneca Valley Raiders came from behind in two of the three games at the Senior High gym on Wednesday evening to defeat the Tigers, 3-0, in a Section 3 match. Leading the way for NA were senior OH Abby Tevis with 8 kills and 12 passes to target, along with junior MH Rachel Schillinger who had seven kills and five blocks.

Seneca jumped off to a 7-4 lead early in game one before the Lady Tigers responded. A pair of kills by senior MH Libby Burns brought NA even at 8-8. Neither team could gain an advantage until the Tigers built a 19-16 lead behind a strong hit by senior OH Jeanne Miller and another kill by Burns. NA extended the margin to 21-17 as Miller and Schillinger recorded kills. After the teams exchanged points, the Raiders went on a 8-4 run to win, 26-24. Prominent in the comeback was the play of junior Linsey Skorupan.

In game two, after an early 7-7 tie, Seneca Valley was able to build a
15-9 lead. A pair of kills by Tevis cut the margin to 15-11 but the
Raiders were able to regain control. With senior Laura Duffy serving, SV
scored four straight points to build a 21-17 advantage. After the lead
went to 24-15, the Lady Tigers mounted a late comeback. Burns served an ace, Schillinger picked up a kill and Seneca misplayed two balls and the Tigers had cut the lead to 24-19. Skorupan then ended the game with a big hit off the NA blockers giving the Raiders a 25-19 win in game two.

The Lady Tigers came out strong in the third game. NA quickly built a 5-1 lead behind another ace by Burns and a Schillinger kill. The Raiders came back to tie the game at 8-8, but the Tigers then went on another run. A block by Burns and junior MH Julienne Moots, two misplays by Seneca and an ace by senior DS Emily Huber pushed the NA lead to 14-9. Burns continued to serve well and picked up her third ace, and a block by Schillinger, who had a great third game, gave the Tigers their biggest advantage at 17-11. The Raiders mounted a comeback at this point, scoring eight straight points to take a 19-17 lead. Once again it was Skorupan who sparked the run, scoring five of the eight points. NA looked on the verge of victory when Moots blocked for a point, senior Juliet Nellis served an ace, and Moots and Burns registered kills. With NA leading 24-22, however, the Raiders put together one last comeback, scoring four straight points to win the game, 26-24, and the match, 3-0.

The Lady Tigers played well during most of the match, but Seneca Valley was able to score at crucial points to win. Miller had seven kills, Huber had 10 passes to target, while Burns posted three aces. For her overall play in only her second game back from injury, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Abby Tevis as the Player of the Game. On Saturday, the Lady Tigers will travel to Pine-Richland to participate in the Pine-Richland Tournament. Action gets under way at 9:00 am with some of the top teams in western Pennsylvania included in the tournament.

LADY TIGERS PREVAIL OVER AMBRIDGE, 3-1

To listen to a replay of the match, click here

Coach Dan Schall’s Lady Tigers won a tough 3-1 decision over a gritty
Ambridge team at the Senior High gym on Tuesday night. Strong play at the net by junior MH Rachel Schillinger and senior OH Taryn Bozorg, along with the sets of junior Amanda Posteraro and the serves of senior Jeanne Miller, paced the NA victory. Junior MH Julienne Moots led a Tiger comeback in game four to insure the win.

In game one, after Ambridge had built a 5-3 lead, the Lady Tigers came
back to take control of the game. Three straight serves by Miller,
including an ace, gave NA a 7-5 advantage. Two aces by junior setter Cara Davies and a pair of kills by Moots boosted the lead to 13-7. Ambridge came back behind the play of 6-1 junior MH Amy Gottuso to tie the game at 14. After the Bridgers took an 18-17 lead, a Schillinger kill tied the game. With Miller serving, Ambridge was called twice for hitting the net, once for a carry. Bozorg added a kill and the Lady Tigers were up 24-18. After a carry by NA made it 24-19, Schillinger ended it with a blast down the middle, and the Lady Tigers had won the first game, 25-19.

Once again in game two, Ambridge jumped off to an early lead before a pair of Bozorg kills tied the game at 5-5. Gottuso then took control of the net with two kills during a run that gave the Bridgers a 13-8 advantage. Two blocks for points by Schillinger kept NA in the game until Bozorg was able to pick up three points on serves to cut the margin to 17-16. A strong cross court smash by Miller and a kill by Schillinger straight down the middle finally put the Lady Tigers on top, 20-19. Ambridge regrouped to score six of the next seven points to win going away, 25-21.

In game three, the Lady Tigers jumped off to a quick 7-2 lead and never
looked back. It was Schillinger and junior OH Katie Elmore who lead the
way for NA. After Ambridge cut the lead to 7-4, junior DS Marie Trombulak came off the bench to serve an ace and pick up four points on a hit by Elmore, along with a kill and block by Moots, as the Tigers extended the lead to 12-4. Gottuso was able to pick up a pair of points on a block and a kill but the closest that the Bridgers were able to get was at 17-10. NA finished off the game on an 8-3 run with Davies serving an ace to end things for the Bridgers as the Lady Tigers won game three, 25-12.

In game four, it appeared that Ambridge was going to force a fifth and
deciding game. The Bridgers took the lead early behind the play of
Gottuso and built a 10-5 lead. A block by Moots and an errant hit by
Ambridge cut the lead to 10-7, but the Bridgers immediately pushed the
advantage back to six points, 13-7, behind the play of senior Erica Huwar. Ambridge continued to roll as Gottuso’s hits and NA errors allowed the Bridgers to build a 19-11 lead. At this point in the game, the Lady Tigers began to come back. A tip by Bozorg, an ace by Miller, and a Bridger infraction cut the margin to 19-14 before Huwar answered with a kill. With Ambridge leading 20-14, Schillinger was able to pick up a kill but junior Rachel Taylor countered to push the lead to 21-15. On the play, Bozorg was injured and had to leave the contest. With Bozorg out, Moots picked up the slack and began her personal comeback with three straight hits that cut the lead to 21-18. Gottuso stopped the run with a great shot just inside the back line, and Huwar served an ace to push the lead to 23-18. After a hitting error by Ambridge cut the margin to 23-19, junior DS Caitlin Krepp came off the bench to serve four straight points and tie the game at 23-23. During the run, it was Moots again with three straight points that spurred the run and got the NA fans on their feet. Gottuso came back with a point on a soft hit, but Moots answered with another big kill to tie the game at 24-24. With senior DS Emily Huber serving, Schillinger came in to finish off the Bridgers with a pair of kills, and the Lady Tigers had won game four, 26-24, and the match, 3 games to one.

It was a big win for the Lady Tigers, who were playing without two of
their senior starters. Senior OH Abby Tevis had broken her foot in
practice and will miss several weeks of the season. Senior MH Libby Burns was ill and could not play but will return soon. For her overall efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Rachel Schillinger as the Player of the Match, with special kudos to junior MH Julienne Moots for her play in game four. The win got NA off and running in section play as they get ready to go on the road for a pair of games. The Lady Tigers will travel to Shaler tonight and to Butler next Tuesday before returning home for a big match with Seneca Valley next Wednesday. Scheduled starting time for all matches will be 7:00 pm. The North Allegheny Sports Network will be on hand next Wednesday to broadcast the Seneca Valley match LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:50 pm.
