TIGERS STOP SHALER, 3-2

After three postponements, the Tigers and Shaler finally met at the Senior High field on Wednesday afternoon with NA coming away with a 3-2 victory.  The Tigers broke open a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Titans in the rematch of last year's WPIAL championship game.  Senior right hander Josh Lamm picked up the win for the Tigers.  Senior Matt Kuntz had a double for the only extra-base hit of the contest.

After Shaler scored in the top of the first inning, the Tigers came back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 advantage.  The Titans tied the game in the top of the fourth and it remained that way until NA got the winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

The Tigers will be back in action again on Saturday when they host the New Castle Red Hurricanes in a Section 5 game.  New Castle beat NA, 2-0, earlier in the season.  The NSN Sports Network will broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 11:45 am.  Game time is scheduled for 12 noon.

TIGERS OUTHIT BUTLER, 13-3

Junior center fielder Blake Jurena had three hits, including a double and a triple, to lead the Tigers to a 13-3 victory over the Butler Golden Tornado on Tuesday afternoon at Butler.  The Tigers pounded out fourteen hits, including five doubles and a triple.  Junior left hander Josh Hungerman went the distance to earn his fourth victory of the season.

The Tigers jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one inning, increased it to 8-1 after three innings, and put it away with a five-run fifth.  Hungerman got the Tornado 1-2-3 in the fifth allowing the 10-run five-inning rule to end the game.  Pounding out doubles for NA were Jurena, junior left fielder Tim Merolillo, junior 3B Mike Juliano, senior first baseman Brandon Woods, and junior SS John Quimby.

TIGERS BEAT SENECA VALLEY, 4-1, TO AVENGE AN EARLIER LOSS

Senior right hander Eric Leuthold led the Tigers to a 4-1 victory over Seneca Valley at the Senior High field on Saturday.  Leuthold held Seneca to just four hits while senior 1B Brandon Woods had two hits, driving in a run and scoring a run.  Senior third baseman Matt Kuntz doubled and junior RF Rory Miller tripled as NA avenged an earlier 9-8 loss to Seneca Valley.

The game was scoreless for four and one-half innings before the Tigers exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fifth.  The Raiders came back to score a run in the sixth, but Leuthold held them off the remainder of the game.

The win improved the NA record to 3-2 in section play, good for second place.  The overall Tiger record is now 7-2.  The Tigers will be back in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Butler for a 4:00 pm section contest.  On Wednesday, NA and Shaler will try for the fourth time to play a non-section game.  Naturally, rain is in the forecast.

NEW CASTLE BLANKS TIGERS, 2-0

The New Castle Red Hurricanes shut out the Tigers, 2-0, at Flaherty Field in New Castle on Friday afternoon.  New Castle senior pitcher Chris Berkley limited the Tigers to just four singles as the 'Canes defeated the Tigers for the first time since joining the section in 1997.  The loss dropped the NA record to 2-2 in section, 6-2 overall.

New Castle did all their scoring in the bottom of the first inning.  With two outs, Joe Onufrak, Mike LePore and David Colella all doubled to give Berkley all the runs he needed.  The Tigers threatened in the top of the third when junior rightfielder Rory Miller singled to lead off the inning.  Junior shortstop John Quimby then sacrificed him to second.  The next batter walked.  Junior LF Tim Merolillo hit a hard smash toward first that LePore smothered and touched the base to end the inning.

The story of the game was the New Castle defense.  Colella made two running catches in the gaps while Anthony Cameron was able to catch up to a short fly in right field.  Shortstop John Villani and 3B Michael Malley made diving stops on grounders and threw out runners at first.  "It was like watching Sports Center out there - every inning there was at least one play that was unbelievable", said NA Coach Tim Banner.  Commenting on the first NA loss to New Castle under his leadership, Banner added, "Every time it seemed like something was going to happen for us, their guys came up with a big play."

The Tigers will be back in action again this afternoon when they face the Seneca Valley Raiders at the Senior High field.  Seneca came back to edge the Tigers, 9-8, in the section opener at Seneca.

TIGERS THROTTLE NORTH HILLS, 8-0

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Junior lefthander Josh Hungerman tossed a four-hitter, and senior 3B Matt Kuntz and junior LF Tim Merolillo slammed home runs as the Tigers blanked North Hills, 8-0, at the Senior High field on Thursday afternoon. Kuntz added a double and a single and drove in a pair of runs as NA improved their section record to 2-1, 6-1 overall.

Neither team threatened in the first inning, but the Tigers had something going in the bottom of the second.  With one out, Kuntz hit a double to deep left center field, and senior first baseman Brandon Woods beat out an infield single moving Kuntz to third.  North Hills pitcher Brian Long struck out the next two batters, however, to end the threat.

Hungerman continued to control the North Hills batters, allowing only an infield single and a walk through the first four innings.  In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers erupted for four runs.  Junior catcher Pat Trettel led off with a long drive to the fence in left field good for a double.  Kuntz followed with a line single to left, scoring courtesy runner Harry Austin with the game's first run.  Woods then hit a drive to deep right field for a double to score Kuntz and make it 2-0.  After one out, junior SS John Quimby came through with a line drive to deep left center field for another double, scoring Woods.  Quimby moved to third on the throw to the plate, and junior CF Blake Jurena scored him with a sacrifice fly to center field.  After four innings, the Tigers held a 4-0 advantage.

After Hungerman set down the side in order in the top of the fifth, the Tigers went to work again in the bottom of the inning.  Kuntz led off with a home run just inside the left field foul pole to push the lead to 5-0.  After Woods walked, Allan Senatore took over on the mound for the Indians.  A wild pitch moved Woods to second and a ground out put him on third.  With two outs, Jurena hit a high pop fly along the first base line that was dropped by 1B Jason Bisesi, allowing Woods to score and Jurena to reach on the error.  Merolillo made the Indians pay as he drove a pitch deep over the fence in right center field for a two-run homer giving NA an 8-0 lead.

North Hills threatened in the top of the sixth.  A bunt single and a bloop hit off the glove of second baseman Evan Mulzet put runners on a first and second with two outs.  Hungerman got Long to ground weakly to the mound to get out of the inning.  In the top of the seventh, Hungerman struck out two of the last three batters to pick up the shutout and the victory.  The Tiger lefty struck out six on the way to his third win against no losses on the season.

The Tigers broke the game open with a strong hitting attack that posted eleven hits, including five doubles and two home runs.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Matt Kuntz as the Player of the Game.  The Tigers will be back in action this afternoon when they travel to New Castle for a 3:30 pm section contest.

NA returns home tomorrow afternoon when they host Seneca Valley in a 2:00 pm section game.  Seneca edged the Tigers, 9-8, in the section opener at Seneca.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 1:45 pm.  Be sure to join Don Vandergrift and Jordan Dee for all the action, live or archived.

LEUTHOLD TOSSES ONE-HITTER AS NA WINS, 8-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior righthander Eric Leuthold came within one out of a no-hitter as the Tigers crushed the Golden Tornado, 8-1, at the Senior High field on Monday afternoon.  Junior DH Mike Juliano had a triple while junior catcher Pat Trettel and junior CF Blake Jurena slammed doubles in a thirteen-hit NA attack.  Leuthold ended up with a one-hitter, striking out eleven.

After Leuthold struck out the side in the top of the first, the Tigers struck quickly for three runs.  Jurena led off with a base hit to center field.  After Jurena stole second, junior LF Tim Merolillo walked.  After the Tigers executed a double steal, Haak singles to right field to give NA a 1-0 lead.  Merolillo scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 2-0.  With one out, Trettel walked.  Senior third baseman Matt Kuntz drove in the third run with a ground out to second base, and Tigers had a 3-0 lead after one inning.

Leuthold continued to dominate the Tornado hitters, striking four more batters over the second and third innings.  In the bottom of the third, Juliano led off with a single to right field and then stole second.  After one out, Kuntz lined a hard single to left field moving Merolillo to third.  A squeeze play failed and Merolillo was caught in a rundown for the second out.  Senior 1B Brandon Woods bounced a single up the middle scoring Kuntz and NA took a 4-0 lead into the fourth inning.

After Leuthold got three ground ball outs in the top of the fourth, the Tigers broke the game open with four more runs in the bottom of the inning.  Junior shortstop John Quimby beat out an infield single to lead off.  Jurena followed with a long double into the right center field gap moving Quimby to third.  Merolillo drove in Quimby with a ground ball to first as the lead increased to 5-0.  After Haak flew out to right field, Juliano drove a long triple to left center field, scoring Jurena with the sixth NA run.  After Juliano scored on a wild pitch, Trettel doubled to deep center field.  Kuntz slammed a base hit just inside the third base line, scoring Austin who ran for Trettel, and NA took an 8-0 lead into the top of the fifth.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth and could not score.  With NA leading, 8-0, in the top of the seventh, Leuthold retired shortstop Aaron Ordy to lead off the inning.  To this point, the Tiger righthander had retired all 19 batters he faced.  Left fielder Adam Walker then drew a walk, breaking up the perfect game.  Leuthold got 3B Josh Edwards on a foul popup to Woods.  With two outs, 1B Mike Durondo hit a long double to deep center field, breaking up the no-hitter and the shutout.  Durondo was then picked off second base to end the game.

Leuthold was outstanding throughout the game and was named the Player of the Game by the North Allegheny Sports Network.  Although the game was played in cold temperatures, both teams played well without committing an error.  The win evened the NA section record at 1-1 and improved the overall mark to 4-1.  The Tigers will be in action again next Monday when they travel to Shaler for a non-section contest.  Game time is set for 4:00 pm at Matulevic Field.

TIGERS DROP SECTION OPENER TO SENECA VALLEY, 9-8

The Tigers finally played a game after all the rain and cold weather.  The outcome, however, was not what NA was hoping for as they dropped a 9-8 decision at Seneca Valley on Saturday.  It was a tough loss for the Tigers as they had built an 8-1 lead early in the game only to see the Raiders come back to win the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.

After Seneca Valley scored in the bottom of the first, the Tigers erupted for eight runs in the top of the second.  Junior Mike Juliano homered for the Tigers while junior Blake Jurena added a double.  The Raiders kept pecking away at the lead, however, with a single run in the third and three more in the fifth.  With NA still leading, 8-5, Seneca Valley scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth.  The Raiders capped the rally with a pair of tallies in the bottom of the seventh to pick up a 9-8 victory.  Chris Tremblay had four hits to pace the Raiders.

The loss dropped the NA overall record to 3-1, 0-1 in section play.  The Tigers will be back in action this afternoon when they host the Butler Golden Tornado, weather permitting again.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet.  Be sure to join Don Vandergrift and Bob Caldwell for all the action, live or archived.

The Tiger season got off to a great start against McKeesport when junior centerfielder Blake Jurena led off the game with a home run.  The Tigers added another run when third baseman Matt Kuntz scored on a pass ball giving NA a 2-0 lead after one inning.  After McKeesport picked up a run in the top of the third, the Tigers came back to score five.  Jurena singled to right field and second baseman Tyler Haak followed with a base hit to center.  Kuntz then singled to left to load the bases.  DH Mike Juliano drove in a pair with a single to right field to give the Tigers a 4-0 advantage.  After a fielder's choice by first baseman Brandon Woods drove in another run, leftfielder Tim Merolillo walked to load the bases again.  After a second out, rightfielder Dan Williams singled to center field scoring a pair of runs as NA took a 7-1 lead after three innings.

The Tigers added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth.  After Haak reached on an error, Kuntz and Juliano walked to load the bases.  A walk to Merolillo drove in a run, and catcher Brian Roberts doubled two more runs home as NA increased the lead to 10-1.  McKeesport came back to score three in the top of the sixth inning, cutting the Tiger lead to 10-4.  The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the sixth on their way to an 11-4 victory in the opener.

Senior righthander Eric Leuthold pitched four innings to earn the victory.  Josh Lamm pitched two innings and Smith hurled the seventh.  The win gave NA a 1-0 record after one game in South Carolina.

The Tigers knocked off Lewisville twice on Saturday afternoon.  In the first game, Lewisville scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.  NA came back with three runs in the third inning.  Walks to shortstop John Quimby and Jurena set the stage for Merolillo who drilled a three-run homer to put the Tigers in front, 3-1. NA added a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.  After Woods singled to left, successive walks to Haak, Williams and Quimby drove in a run.  Merolillo was then hit by a pitch to push the NA lead to 5-1.  The Tigers tacked on another run in the top of the fifth when Haak singled home Juliano.  The Bearcats scored three in the bottom of the fifth to make it close, but the Tigers held on for a 6-4 victory.  Junior righthander Mike Birsic went four innings to earn the victory.

In the second game, Lewisville again scored in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.  The Tigers tied the game in the top of the third.  After DH Pat Trettel reached on an error, Haak and Williams walked.  Trettel then scored on a passed ball to knot the score at 1-1.  The Tigers took the lead in the top of the third.  Jurena led off with a single to left field.  After Merolillo flew out to center field, Jurena moved to second on a passed ball.  Kuntz singled to score Jurena to give NA a 2-1 advantage.

The Tigers added a run in the top of the fourth.  Woods opened with a single to left and Haak walked.  Both runners moved up on a passed ball.  Woods scored when a ground ball hit by catcher Zack Swartz was booted by the third baseman.  In the top of the fifth, the Tigers picked up another unearned run on their way to a 4-1 victory.  Junior lefthander Josh Hungerman went four innings to pick up the victory.
