TIGERS SWEEP FOX CHAPEL FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN

After holding off a challenge from Fox Chapel in the first game and winning, 25-21, the Tigers rolled over the Foxes in games two and three, 25-15 and 25-15, at Fox Chapel on Monday night.  Leading the way for the Tigers were senior Brandon Cook, senior Will Jenkins, and senior Kyle Pelz.  Senior setter John Kofmehl once again ran the offense with precision passing

Fox Chapel matched the Tigers point for point in the first game, tying the score at 21-21.  NA pulled away at the end, scoring the final four points, to post the victory.  In the second game, Cook's jump serves gave NA the advantage right from the start.  Senior Ian Fitzpatrick also served well, mixing floaters and jump serves.  Jenkins was inserted into the lineup in game two and came through with outstanding passing, defense and hitting.  NA prevailed, 25-21, in the second game.  Game number three was no contest as the Tigers built a 23-9 lead.  Coach Dan Schall was able to use his bench liberally in the game as NA coasted to the 25-15 victory.

The win was the fifth straight without a loss in section play for the Tigers.  NA will be back in action again tonight when they travel to North Hills for another section match.  Summit Academy will be at the Senior High gym on Thursday night for a 7:00 pm section contest.

TIGERS FALL IN QUARTERFINALS OF YORK TOURNAMENT

Coach Dan Schall's Tigers were defeated by defending PIAA champion Hempfield, 25-17, in the quarterfinals of the Koller Varsity Classic at Central York on Saturday.  Hempfield won the title with NA finishing in fifth place.  The Tigers defeated Central Bucks West, 25-22, to advance to the quarterfinals.

The Tigers won seven of eight games in pool play.  NA knocked off Emmaus, Dallastown and York Suburban two games to none, but split with Pennsbury.  The Tigers finished in second place, according to the third tie breaker, overall points against in the pool.

In the quarterfinal, the Tigers played the defending champions tough early in the match, playing to a 12-12 tie.  At that point, Hempfield scored three straight points on serve to increase the lead to 15-12.  The Tigers had difficulty scoring after that and dropped a hard-fought 25-17 contest.

At the York Invitational, NA got an opportunity to play against good teams from other parts of the state.  It was a good chance to play against outstanding competition in preparation for a run at the state title later in the season.

The Tigers will be in action again tomorrow night when they travel to Fox Chapel for a 7:00 pm section contest.  NA will visit North Hills on Tuesday before returning home to host Summit Academy on Thursday night.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there on Thursday night to broadcast the match LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 6:50 pm.

SHALER NO MATCH FOR TIGERS AS NA WINS, 3-0

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

The Tigers used strong play at the net to dominate the Shaler Titans, 3-0, at the Senior High gym on Thursday night.  Power hitting by seniors Kyle Pelz, A.J. Hickcox, Steve Donaldson, Pat Mularkey, and Brandon Cook controlled play as NA won by scores of 25-12, 25-19, and 25-14.  Once again, senior setter John Kofmehl set the table for the NA hitters with accurate sets.

In the first game, the teams played evenly in the early going.  With the score tied at 6-6, the Tigers picked up points on a Kofmehl serve and Cook cross-court kill to give NA an 8-6 advantage.  After senior Jeff Neely cut the lead to 8-7, Donaldson came back with a big hit to make it 9-7.  After a kill by senior MH John Binz kept Shaler close at 11-9, the Tigers went on a 5-0 run behind the jump serving of Cook.  Pelz went down the middle, Hickcox added a kill, Pelz picked up another, and Cook served a pair of aces as the Tigers took a 16-9 advantage.  After Binz scored again on a strong hit, Pelz and a Shaler misplay pushed the margin to 18-10.  Shaler managed to get within two at 18-12 before NA ran the table to win going away, 25-12.  Down the stretch, Shaler misplayed five consecutive balls with senior Mike Petrasek serving as the Tiger lead went to 23-12.  Mularkey's block and cross-court blast ended the Titan hopes as NA won game one.

The teams exchanged points early in game two with Neely's hit tying the score at 4-4.  A block by Pelz and Donaldson, along with a hit off the blockers by Cook, gave NA a 6-4 lead.  Mularkey's strong hit, Cook's tip and junior Will Jenkins' block pushed the Tiger margin to 9-6.  After a kill by Cook, it was time for the jump serve again.  Cook picked up two straight aces before serving long as NA built a 12-8 advantage.  Shaler staged a rally at this point, outscoring the Tigers 7-3 to tie the game at 15-15.  After Kofmehl and senior Matt Elizir exchanged points, Cook's kill and two Shaler misplays put NA back in front, 19-16.  With the Tigers ahead, 20-18, Hickcox came through with a big hit and Cook served another ace as the lead went to 23-18.  After a Shaler point, Hickcox ended things for Shaler in game two with a kill off the Shaler blockers and a service ace as NA won game two, 25-19.

Coach Dan Schall used his entire bench in the fourth quarter as the Tigers played all 21 players.  The Tigers jumped off to a quick 8-4 lead behind the hitting of junior Steve Nicola, Hickcox and Pelz. After Shaler cut the lead to 9-7, Pelz and Binz exchanged points making it a 10-8 NA lead.  With the Tigers holding a 13-12 advantage, NA went on a 5-0 run behind three kills by Hickcox and two by Pelz.  After Shaler picked up a point on an errant NA serve, Pelz, junior Kevin Moskal, and junior Josh Leroux all picked up kills as the Tigers went on to win, 25-14, and wrap up the match in three straight games.

The Tigers got good performances from a number of players throughout the match.  For his overall efforts at the net, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Kyle Pelz as the Player of the Match.  The Tigers will travel to York to participate in the York Invitational on Saturday.  NA will return home on Monday when they will visit Fox Chapel for a 7:00 pm section match.

TIGERS BLANK SENECA VALLEY, 3-0, FOR THIRD STRAIGHT

The Tigers used a well balanced offensive attack with senior setter John Kofmehl moving the ball around and utilizing the strong NA hitters at the net.  Good passing by senior defensive specialists Aaron Wynkoop and Mike Petrasek sparked the NA effort.  All 21 Tigers saw action in the match.

TIGERS SWEEP DEER LAKES, 3-0

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

Coach Dan Schall's Tigers defeated the Deer Lakes Lancers in three straight games at the Senior High gym on Wednesday night, but it was not easy.  NA won 25-20, 25-22, and 25-22 to remain unbeaten in section play.  The Tigers got great play from senior setter John Kofmehl and outstanding hitting and blocking from seniors Brandon Cook, Kyle Pelz, and Steve Donaldson.

The Tigers jumped off to a quick 5-1 lead in game one.  A kill by Donaldson, a tip and a kill by Cook, and a pair of Deer Lakes' errors gave NA the advantage.  After the Lancers cut the lead to 5-3, Mullarkey came back with a strong hit to push it to 6-3.  Deer Lakes was able to tie the game at 8-8 behind the play of senior MH Jon Bodnar and junior RS Joel Trocki.  From this point, NA would score and Deer Lakes would counter for the next five points.  Senior A.J. Hickcox gave NA a 10-9 advantage, Cook went off the blockers for a point, Pelz and Donaldson had kills, Cook blasted cross court for another point but the score remained tied at 13-13.  Hickcox's kill and Cook's block finally gave NA a two-point lead at 15-13.  Deer Lakes remained close, however, and senior Jaison Van Horn's kill cut the lead to 18-17.  At this point, the Tigers took control.  With Kofmehl serving, the Lancers made three straight miscues to push the NA lead to 21-17.  Mullarkey's blast down the middle and Cook's strong hit down the line pushed it to 24-19, and Cook ended with with a big hit and NA had won the first game, 25-20.

In game two, Deer Lakes jumped off to a 3-0 lead before the Tigers came back to tie the game on Cook's off speed dink.  The Lancers continued to play well in the early going, building leads of 8-6 and 10-8.  With the Lancers ahead, 11-9, the Tigers rallied to go ahead.  Once again with Kofmehl serving, Deer Lakes committed three errors and Mullarkey had a kill to give the Tigers a 14-11 advantage.  The Lancers came back to tie the game, however, as NA made three hitting errors.  With the Tigers ahead, 18-16, Cook delivered an ace and picked up another point with the jump serve to give the Tigers a 20-16 lead.  The Lancers came back again to tie the score as Trocki served a pair of aces and NA misplayed another ball and the score was tied at 20-20.  NA then took control as Pelz scored a point off the DL blockers and senior OH Will Jenkins served up three straight points.   After Deer Lakes scored twice, Donaldson put away game two with a blast giving the Tigers a 25-22 victory.

The Tigers took a 3-0 early lead in game three and never lost it.  Mullarkey's kill, a block by Mullarkey and Cook, and another Mullarkey kill set the stage.  Deer Lakes came back, however, but the Tigers had an answer each time.  Cook went down the middle, Mularkey hit deep, and Pelz scored off the blockers as NA maintained a 6-4 advantage.  Jenkins and Donaldson both had kills before Deer Lakes countered to make it an 8-6 lead.  With NA leading 10-8, Donaldson served four straight behind the hitting of Jenkins and Mullarkey.  Jenkins' kill and Cook's jump serve put the Tigers on top, 16-12, before Deer Lakes score a pair of points by senior Adam Craft.  A kill by Pelz and an ace by Hickcox boosted the lead to 18-14.  Bodnar led a Deer Lakes comeback that brought the Lancers to within one at 19-18, but the Tigers responded again, as they had in the first two games.  With the game on the line, Mullarkey scored off the blockers and Kofmehl served two straight to make it 22-18.  Donaldson's kill and Mullarkey's block pushed to lead to 24-21, and Kyle Pelz gave NA the game and the match with a big hit.  The Tigers won game three, 25-22.

It was a hard-fought match between two experienced teams.  The Tigers came through in the clutch to pick up the victory.  For his play, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Brandon Cook as the Player of the Match.  The Tigers will be in action again next Tuesday night when they travel to Seneca Valley to meet the Raiders in a section match.  Starting time is set for 7:00 pm.
