STATE COLLEGE ENDS TIGERS' SEASON, 6-2

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The State College Little Lions defeated the Tigers, 6-2, at White Park in Indiana on Monday afternoon in the semifinals of the PIAA Quad-A Tournament.  Senior John Quimby had a triple and a single to pace the Tigers.  Senior center fielder Blake Jurena had a double for one of the Tigers' six hits.

In the top of the first, State College threatened. After RF Jon Gray led off with a bunt single, senior LHP Josh Hungerman got the next two outs.  DH Wes Borden then dropped a double just inside the third base line, but Hungerman got a ground out to end the inning.  In the bottom of the first, the Tigers scored once and had a chance for more.  With one out, Quimby was hit by a pitch.  Senior left fielder Tim Merolillo followed with a line drive single to right.  Senior catcher Pat Trettel slapped a single to right field and Quimby tried to score.  As Quimby slid past the catcher and touched the plate with his left hand, the home plate umpire signaled safe.  It appeared that the Tigers had taken a 1-0 lead.  Unfortunately for NA, the umpire had signaled safe but called out.  Two pitches later, senior right hander Erik Kempton tossed a wild pitch allowing Merolillo to score from third.  The Tigers held a 1-0 lead after one inning.

Neither team could score over the next two innings although State College threatened again in the top of the third.  With one out, 3B Tim Glusko drew a walk and moved to second on a balk that was contested by the Tiger coaches.  On the next pitch, 2B Nick Bathurst singled to center field to score Glusko and tie the score at 1-1.  After Hungerman struck out clean-up hitter Borden, center fielder Matt Moberg hit a triple into the right center field gap to score Bathurst and give the Little Lions a 2-1 lead after two and one half innings.

In the top of the fourth, catcher Austin Homan singled to lead off the inning.  After 1B Matt White walked, LF Brett Lissenden sacrificed the runners to third and second.  Hungerman was able to get the next two batters on a ground out and a fly ball to center field to end the threat.

Kempton was sailing along until the top of the fifth when the Tigers threatened to tie the game.  With one out, Jurena hit a double to deep left field.  After Quimby walked, Kempton got a strike out and a fly ball to end the inning and keep State College in the lead, 2-1.

The Little Lions added another run in the top of the fifth.  With one out, Homan doubled to left center field.  After a ground out, Lissenden walked.  With two outs, Gray singled to left field to make it a 3-1 State College.  Coach Tim Banner made a pitching change with Merolillo replacing Tiger starter Hungerman.  It was a gutsy performance by the Tiger lefthander who was pitching on just four days rest.  Merolillo struck out Glusko to end the inning.

Once again, the Tigers had a chance in the bottom of the sixth.  With one out, DH Brian Roberts walked.  Hungerman followed with a single to right field to put the tying runs on base.  Once again, however, Kempton was able to get out of the jam with a strike out and a fly ball to right field.

The Little Lions scored three more runs in the top of the seventh.  After Bathurst tripled to right center field to lead off, Borden was hit by a pitch.  Moberg then lined into a double play, and it looked like the Tigers and Merolillo were going to get out of the inning.  State College, however, followed with four straight singles by shortstop Doug Suhey, Homan, White, and Lissenden to drive in three runs and increase the SC lead to 6-1 going into the bottom of the seventh.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Quimby lined a ball to right field that got past Gray who tried to make a diving catch. Quimby went all the way to third for a triple.  Merolillo followed with a slow ground ball to first that scored Quimby.  Trettel hit a line shot that was caught by shortstop Suhey with a leaping catch to end the game.

It was a tough loss for the Tigers who battled the entire game.  NA could not get the big hit and left eight runners on base.  It was a well-played game with neither team committing an error, but the Little Lions hit the ball a little better and came away with the victory.

The loss ended a dream season for the Tigers as they finished with a record of 23-3 and the WPIAL Championship.  The loss ended a ten-game NA winning streak that included three straight wins in the WPIAL Tournament and two straight in the PIAA.

AUSTIN'S THREE-RUN DOUBLE KEYS NA COMEBACK IN 6-4 VICTORY

With the Tigers trailing Upper St. Clair, 4-3, junior right fielder Harry Austin sparked an NA rally with a three-run double in the last of the fourth inning as the Tigers defeated the Panthers, 6-4, in a PIAA quarterfinal contest at the Burkett Complex on Thursday afternoon.  Austin had two hits and junior DH Brian Roberts added a double and a single to pace the winning Tigers.  Senior Josh Hungerman went the distance to pick up his twelfth victory of the year without a loss.

The Panthers jumped on top, 2-0, in the top of the first.  After two outs, catcher Kris McDonough doubled and first baseman Jack Greenberg was hit by a pitch.  After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, 2B Len Mills singled up the middle to score both runs.  The Tigers scored single runs in the bottom of the second and third to tie the game at 2-2 after three innings.

In the top of the fourth, the Panthers recaptured the lead.  John Bocchini hit a sacrifice fly to score one run and a second run scored when the throw to the infield got away as USC took a 4-2 advantage into the bottom of the fourth.

Senior 1B Mike Juliano singled to lead off the bottom of the inning.  After one out, senior CF Blake Jurena singled to move Juliano to second.  Senior left fielder Tim Merolillo followed with a single to score Jurena and cut the margin to 4-3.  After USC pitcher Ryan Cain was called for a balk, senior catcher Pat Trettel was intentionally walked to load the bases.  With the count at 3-2, Austin lined a shot into the left center field gap that scored all three runs to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead after four innings.

After struggling in the first four innings, Hungerman took over and maintained the lead over the final three innings.  The senior lefthander retired nine of the final 11 batters to earn the victory.  The Panthers threatened in the top of the sixth when they had runners on first and second with one out.  Ryan O'Connor hit a ground ball between first and second that hit Greenberg for the second out.  Hungerman then retired the next batter on a fly ball to retire the side.  USC did not threaten in the seventh.

It was a tough victory for the Tigers who were playing USC for the second time in a week.  The Tigers were able to play well when they had.  Key hits by Merolillo and Austin gave them the necessary runs to win, and Hungerman was tough down the stretch as the Tigers moved on to the semis.

With the victory, the Tigers improved their overall record to 23-2.  The win advanced NA to the semifinals of the PIAA Tournament where they will meet State College, a 3-1 winner over Owen J. Roberts.  The game will be played at the White Township Recreational Complex in Indiana, PA.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm, but again, Tiger fans should note that there is a 2:00 pm contest.  Game time will probably be moved back.

TIGERS TOP ALLDERDICE, 7-0, IN FIRST ROUND OF PIAA PLAYOFFS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers managed only three hits, but took advantage of five walks and seven hit batters to defeat the Allderdice Dragons, 7-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Matulevic Field in Shaler in the first round of the WPIAL Playoffs.  Senior righthander Justin Stark allowed only three hits and struck out five to earn the victory while senior shortstop John Quimby had a two-run triple for NA.

Stark got the Tigers off to a good start, striking out two of the first three batters.  In the bottom of the first with two outs, senior LF Tim Merolillo reached on an error and stole second base.  After a passed ball moved Merolillo to third, both senior catcher Pat Trettel and junior RF Harry Austin were hit by pitches.  Junior DH Brian Roberts followed with a ground ball that was bobbled by the shortstop allowing Merolillo to score.  The unearned run gave NA a 1-0 lead after one inning.

In the bottom of the second, senior third baseman Evan Mulzet led off with a single up the middle.  With Mulzet running, sophomore 2B Dave Bergstrom singled to right field with Mulzet advancing to third.  Senior center fielder Blake Jurena hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Mulzet and gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead after two innings.  Neither team was able to score in the next two innings although the Tigers had two runners on in the fourth.

Stark continued to mow down the Dragon batters retiring 14 of the first 15 hitters before DH Nick Rossi singled with two outs in the top of the fifth.  Stark got the next batter on a ground out to keep NA ahead 2-0.  In the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers added another run without getting a base hit.  After Quimby was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, the Tigers shortstop stole second.  Merolillo hit into a force play with Quimby retired in a rundown.  After Merolillo stole his second base of the game, Trettel was hit by a pitch for the second time with junior Geoff Lang going in as a courtesy runner.  After a wild pitch moved both runners up a base, Austin dropped down a bunt on a suicide squeeze that scored Merolillo with the third NA run.  After five innings, the Tigers held a 3-0 advantage.

In the top of the sixth, right fielder Tad Abel led off with a base hit to right field.  Shortstop Kevin Ankney then hit into a 4-6-3 double play.  After a walk, Stark struck out CF Will Flynn to retire the side.  The Tigers broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth.  After pinch hitter Rory Miller walked to open the inning, junior Jon Kramer went in to run.  A stolen base by Kramer and a wild pitch put a runner on third with no outs.  Mulzet followed with a sacrifice fly to right field to make it 4-0.  With one out Bergstrom walked and junior Kyle Smith went in to run.  After Smith stole second, Jurena drew a walk.  Quimby followed with a line drive into the right center field gap that scored two runs to increase the Tiger lead to 6-0.  Merolillo walked and Trettel was hit for the third time (!) to load the bases.  Roberts was then hit by a pitch to force in a run to make it 7-0, and that marked the end of the day for Dragon pitcher Ross Gusky.  Senior 1B Mike Juliano hit a fly ball to right field to end the inning.

Senior Mike Birsic came in to pitch in the top of the seventh and retired the side in order as the Tigers defeated the Dragons, 7-0.  It was a bizarre game that saw NA post only three base hits.  With Gusky not able to find the strike zone, however, the Tigers were able to take advantage of the base runners to pull out the win.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Justin Stark as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tiger overall record improved to 22-2 on the season.  The victory advanced the Tigers to the quarterfinals of the PIAA Tournament where they will meet Upper St. Clair on Thursday.  NA defeated USC, 12-1, in the championship game of the WPIAL Playoffs last week.  The game is scheduled to be played at the Burkett Complex in Robinson Township with game time set for 1:00 pm.

TIGERS POUND UPPER ST. CLAIR, 12-1, TO WIN WPIAL TITLE

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers defeated the Upper St. Clair Panthers, 12-1, at Falconi Field in Washington on Wednesday night to win the first WPIAL Quad-A Championship.  Senior shortstop John Quimby had a triple and a single to pace a 13-hit NA attack.  Junior DH Brian Roberts added a double and a single driving in three runs.  Senior lefthander Josh Hungerman allowed only two hits over five innings to earn his eleventh victory without a loss during the season.

Neither team threatened in the first inning with Hungerman striking out two of the three batters he faced.  Both teams had a chance in the second but did not score.  In the top of the inning, senior DH Chris Coleman led off with a base hit up the middle.  Junior RF Pat Slowey bunted hard past the mound and, when the throw to first got away, both runners advanced.  Hungerman then got the next three hitters to end the threat.  A fly ball to short right field, a called third strike and a ground ball to first ended the inning.

In the bottom of the second, the Tigers threatened to take the lead.  After one out, Roberts singled to center field and Hungerman walked.  Junior righthander Ryan Cain was able to get a strike out and a ground out to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

The Panthers took the lead in the top of the third.  After junior LF Russ Kropp walked, senior center fielder Dan Cafaro bunted back to the mound.  When the throw to second was wide, both runners were safe.  Second baseman Len Mills then beat out a bunt single to load the bases with no outs.  Junior catcher Kris McDonough walked to force in a run, but Hungerman got the next three batters, two on called third strikes, to end the inning.  USC took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the first.  It marked the first time the Tigers had been behind in the playoffs.

It did not take long for NA to rectify the situation.  After senior CF Blake Jurena walked and stole second, Quimby singled to right field to score Jurena and tie the game at 1-1.  The stolen base was the 22nd of the year for Jurena without being caught.  After senior RF Tim Merolillo grounded to second and sent Quimby to third, senior catcher Pat Trettel was hit by a pitch.  Junior right fielder Harry Austin lined the first pitch to left field driving in Quimby and giving NA a 2-1 lead.  Roberts followed with a line shot into right center field to score courtesy runner Geoff Lang and Austin as the Tigers took a 4-1 lead.  With junior righthander Justin Darby pitching for the Panthers, senior 1B Mike Juliano singled to left field scoring Roberts as NA took a 5-1 advantage into the fourth inning.

In the top of the fourth, Hungerman retired the side in order.  In the bottom of the inning, the Tigers struck again.  After Quimby singled to right field, Merolillo dropped a base hit into short left.  Tiger Head Coach Tim Banner called a double steal with both runners advancing successfully.  After Trettel was hit for a second time, Austin hit a sacrifice fly to deep left center field to make it 6-1.  Roberts followed with another sac fly, his third RBI of the game, to increase the margin to 7-1.  Hungerman lined a base hit to right center scoring courtesy runner Geoff Lang who scored all the way from first base with Hungerman going to second on the throw to the plate.  With courtesy runner Jon Kramer on second, Juliano came through with a base hit to score Kramer and give Juliano two RBIs on the night.  Senior 3B Evan Mulzet got into the act with an RBI single to right field to make it a 10-1 NA lead.  After Jurena doubled just inside the right field line, Pat Gannon came in to pitch for the Panthers.  With the count at 3-2, Quimby hit a long drive to the wall in left center field driving in two more runs and giving the Tigers a 12-1 advantage after four innings.

With the ten-rule rule in effect, Hungerman set down the side in order in the top of the fifth as the Tigers earned their fifth WPIAL championship.  It was another good team effort for NA with the Tiger bats coming alive.  After the game, Coach Banner remarked, "Did you ever see so many line drives?"  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected John Quimby as the Player of the Game.

The win improved the NA overall record to 21-2 on the season.  The title was the second in three years for the Tigers as they get ready for play in the PIAA tournament.  NA will meet City League Champion Allderdice on Monday in the first round of the playoffs.  We will post game information as soon as we receive it.

HUNGERMAN BLANKS BALDWIN ON FOUR HITS IN 4-0 VICTORY

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior lefthander Josh Hungerman allowed only four hits and struck out seven in leading the Tigers to a 4-0 victory over Baldwin in the WPIAL semifinals at Shaler on Tuesday evening.  Junior right fielder Harry Austin had a double and a single along with two RBIs to pace NA.  Senior catcher Pat Trettel had a single and an run batted in.

The Tigers jumped off to an early lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning.  With one out, Baldwin pitcher Matt McCartney hit senior shortstop John Quimby and then walked senior left fielder Tim Merolillo.  Trettel followed with a single to left field scoring Quimby with Merolillo moving to third on the throw to the plate.  Austin grounded to second for a force out with Merolillo scoring the second NA run.  After one half inning, the Tigers held a 2-0 advantage.

After Hungerman got the side in order in the bottom of the first, the Tigers threatened again in the top of the second.  With one out, senior 1B Mike Juliano reached on an error.  With two outs, senior center fielder Blake Jurena walked, but McCartney got Quimby on a ground out to end the inning.  In the bottom of the second, the Highlanders rallied with two outs.  After 3B Brian Cenci drew a walk, and second baseman Shane Cisko singled to center.  Hungerman then struck out catcher Brian Thompson to end the inning.

The Tigers had a chance again in the top of the third.  With one out, Trettel drew a walk.  With two outs, junior DH Brian Roberts singled down the left field line moving junior pinch runner Geoff Lang to second.  Once again, McCartney got a ground out to end the inning.  The Tigers continued to hold a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Tigers added an unearned run.  Merolillo led off with a long drive to deep left field but Baldwin LF Sean Gaughan was able to make a diving catch for the first out.  With two outs, Austin doubled down the left field line.  Roberts grounded to short, but the throw to first was in the dirt allowing Austin to score as the Tigers took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Thompson led off with a single to center field.  After Hungerman sruck out Gaughan, shortstop Mike McCarthy grounded to sophomore 2B Dave Bergstrom who tossed to Quimby for the second out.  Quimby's return throw to first nailed McCarthy as the 4-6-3 double play ended the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth with one out, center fielder Brett Holland singled to center.  Holland moved to second on a wild pitch, but senior 3B Evan Mulzet made a diving stop of a ground ball by DH Justin Dunn to keep the runner at second while getting the out at first.  After Holland stole third, Hungerman struck out 1B Jessie Pesanka to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Tigers added another unearned run.  Quimby led off by reaching on an error by the shortstop.  A wild pitch sent Quimby to second, but the next two batters made outs.  With two down, Austin singled to left field to score Quimby with the fourth NA run.  The Tigers held a 4-0 advantage going into the bottom of the seventh.  Hungerman got the side in order to preserve the victory and send the Tigers to the final.

Hungerman was superb in picking up his tenth victory without a loss.  The Tiger lefthander consistently kept the Baldwin hitters off balance mixing his fast ball and change effectively.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior Josh Hungerman as the Player of the Game.

With the win the Tigers advanced to the WPIAL Championship game next week at Falconi Field in Washington.  NA will play Upper St. Clair for the Quad-A Championship on Wednesday night at Falconi Field in Washington.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

TRETTEL, QUIMBY HOMER TO LEAD TIGERS TO 7-2 VICTORY

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Two-run homers by senior catcher Pat Trettel and senior shortstop John Quimby led the Tigers to a 7-2 victory over Connellsville in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Tournament at Shaler on Thursday evening.  Senior lefthander Josh Hungerman earned his ninth victory without a loss as he limited the Falcons to just two runs on six hits while striking out eight.

Connellsville threatened in the top of the first when leadoff hitter Tom McAllister reached on an error and shortstop Joe Leonard beat out an infield single.  After a sacrifice bunt by DH Andy Schleihauf moved the runners up a base, Hungerman bore down to get the next two outs.  First baseman Chris Pepe was retired on a fly ball to short left and catcher Rich Schliehauf flew out to right field to end the threat.

The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the first.  With one out, Quimby walked and senior LF Tim Merolillo followed with a line drive single to left field.  Trettel then hit a single into left field to score Quimby and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead after one inning.

The Falcons had a pair of runners on base in the top of the second with two outs but Hungerman struck out McAllister to end the inning.  In the bottom of the third, the Tigers and Trettel struck again.  After Merolillo singled to left field for his second hit of the game, Trettel followed with a tremendous blast over the scoreboard in left center field to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead after three innings of play.

In the top of the fourth, Connellsville threatened but Hungerman and the NA defense stopped them again.  After catcher Rich Schleihauf singled off the foot of Hungerman to lead off, pinch runner Ryan Murphy stole second.  Shortstop Bobby Fulton followed with a line drive  to center field.  Murphy tried to score but was gunned down by a perfect throw from senior center fielder Blake Jurena with Trettel making the tag.  Hungerman was able to pick Fulton off as he took off on an attempted steal.  After two straight hits, the Falcons had two outs, no runs, and no runners.  Hungerman struck out RF Chad Shrayar to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers added three more runs.  After senior 1B Mike Juliano led off with a single to right field, senior third baseman Evan Mulzet sacrificed him to second.  Jurena followed with a base hit to left field, scoring Juliano with the fourth NA run.  Quimby then hit a long drive over the left center field fence to the right of the scoreboard as the Tigers increased the lead to 6-0 after four innings.

With one out in the sixth, Connellsville finally broke through when Pepe homered over the left center field fence to cut the lead to 6-1.  The Tigers got the run back in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Jurena reached on an error and immediately stole second.  It was the second stolen base of the game for Jurena and his twenty-first of the season.  Jurena went to third when the throw to second was low and bounced into center field.  Juliano hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Jurena with the seventh NA run.  After six innings, the Tigers held a 7-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Shrayar led off with a home run over the left field fence to cut the margin to 7-2.  Hungerman was then able to strike out two of the next three batters to end the game.  It was another good effort by the Tigers.  After losing at Connellsville, 6-5, earlier in the season, it was a satisfying victory for NA.  In the loss, NA committed seven errors, but in the win, the Tigers had only one miscue.  For his efforts at the plate and behind the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Pat Trettel as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers advanced to the WPIAL semifinals on Tuesday against the Baldwin Highlanders.  The victory improved the overall NA record to 19-2.  Baldwin will enter the game with a mark of 14-6 after their 14-4 victory over Plum.  The game will be played at Shaler with game time set at 4:00 pm.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Once again, Tiger fans are reminded that the game is the second game of a doubleheader and that game time might be delayed.

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

A grand slam by junior DH Brian Roberts and a three-run shot by senior LF Tim Merolillo led the Tigers to an 11-1 win at North Hills in the section finale on Wednesday afternoon.  Senior lefthander Josh Hungerman improved his record to 8-0 as he allowed only three hits and struck out six in the five-inning victory.

The Tigers jumped on top with a pair of runs in the first inning.  Senior center fielder Blake Jurena led off with a long double over the head of NH leftfielder Alan Senatore.  Jurena went to third on a wild pitch and scored when the throw from catcher Marc Morris went into left field.  Senior SS John Quimby followed with a long triple just inside the right field line.  Merolillo walked and stole second and when the throw went into center field, Quimby scored the second NA run.  The Tigers took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the first.

Indian second baseman Brian Wisniewski beat out a high hopper to start the bottom of the inning.  After Wisniewski stole second, third baseman Ryan Fairbrother walked. Shortstop Andrew Heck grounded back to Hungerman who got Wisniewski on a force play at third.  DH Ryan Banner was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out.  After LF Allan Senatore popped up to first baseman Mike Juliano, CF Ryan Lehmeier reached when his checked swing ground ball was bobbled allowing a run to score.  Hungerman got the final out on a line drive to junior RF Harry Austin.  NA led, 2-1, after one inning.

In the top of the second, Hungerman led off with a long double to right field.  After a ground out, pinch runner Geoff Lang scored on a line drive double to right field by senior third baseman Evan Mulzet.  NA took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the second.  After Hungerman retired the side in order, two on strikeouts, the Tigers added another run in the top of the third.  After senior catcher Pat Trettel led off with a ground single to left, Austin forced PR Jon Kramer at second.  After Austin stole second, Roberts flew out to center field for the second out.  Hungerman was then hit by a pitch.  With Austin running, Juliano hit a high hopper for an infield single, and Austin scored when the shortstop bobbled the ball.  NA held a 3-1 lead after two and a half innings.

In the bottom of the third, North Hills threatened after a single and walk with one out.  Hungerman struck out the next two batters to keep NA ahead, 4-1.  In the top of the fourth, the Tigers broke the game open.  After Jurena led off with a single to left, Quimby walked.  Indian relief pitcher Brian Miller got the next two outs.  With a 3-2 count, Roberts hit a long drive over the left field fence onto the tennis courts to clear the bases and give the Tigers a commanding 8-1 advantage.

In the top of the fifth, Jurena walked and stole second.  After Quimby walked, Merolillo lined a 3-2 pitch over the right center field fence to increase the NA lead to 11-1.  After one out in the bottom of the fifth, a walk, single by Fairbrother, and a hit batsman loaded the bases.  Hungerman got Senatore to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game under the ten-run rule.

It was a good team effort by the Tigers as they pounded out nine hits, including six extra base hits, in five innings.  For his big hit that broke the game open, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Brian Roberts as the Player of the Game.

The win gave the section champion Tigers a final section record of 11-1 and improved their overall mark to 17-2.  NA will travel to Plum this afternoon to meet the Mustangs in a non-section game.  The outcome may make a difference in the seedings for the upcoming WPIAL tournament that will get underway next week.

TIGERS BEAT MT. LEBANON, 5-2, ON SENIOR DAY

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

It was Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the Senior High field and the NA seniors took care of Mt. Lebanon, 5-2.  Shortstop John Quimby slammed a two-run homer and drove in three runs while senior righthander Justin Stark allowed only one earned run over six innings to earn the victory.

Mt. Lebanon threatened in the top of the first inning.  After shortstop Anthony DeFilippo led off with a single to right field, Stark struck out left fielder Jason Mageras. Catcher Tucker Stobbe singled to right with DeFilippo stopping at second.  Stark then got DH Greg Hall to ground to sophomore 2B Dave Bergstrom who started a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Neither team was able to mount much of a threat until the bottom of the third.  With one out, Bergstrom lined a single up the middle.  Senior center fielder Blake Jurena grounded into a force play but then stole second.  Quimby was hit by a pitch but senior LF Tim Merolillo ended the inning with a fly ball to short left field.

After Stark got the side in order in the top of the fourth, the Tigers finally grabbed the lead in the bottom of the inning.  After senior catcher Pat Trettel drew a walk, junior Geoff Lang went in as a courtesy runner.  After Lang stole second, a fly ball to deep center field by senior RF Rory Miller allowed Lang to tag and go to third.  Senior PH Luke O'Neill came through with a line drive to left center field to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead after four innings.

Stark continued to mow down the Blue Devils and got the side in order again in the fifth.  In the bottom of the fifth,  the Tiger bats came alive.  Bergstrom led off with a line drive double to right center field.  Jurena followed with a long drive to deep center field for a triple that scored Bergstrom to make it 2-0.  Quimby then hit a drive to deep right center field that sailed over the fence for a two-run homer to increase the NA lead to 4-0.  Merolillo then hit a line shot past second baseman Chris Happ for a base hit that ended the day for Lebo pitcher Joe Perotti.  With the single, the Tigers completed the cycle with the first four batters of the inning.  Righthander Mike Benintend came in to pitch for the Blue Devils and retired the side without further damage, but the Tigers took a 4-0 lead into the sixth.

With one out, senior CF Steve Matthews lined a double to deep left field.  DeFilippo followed with a hard single to right moving Matthews to third.  Mageras hit a slow ground ball to third that senior 3B Evan Mulzet made a good play on to get the runner at first with Matthews scoring on the play.  It was the first earned run given up by Stark all season.  DeFilippo was able to score on an NA throwing error to cut the lead to 4-2 after five and one-half innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, Mulzet led off with a double to left center field.  After a fly ball to right for the first out, Jurena reached on an error that moved Mulzet to third.  Coach Tim Banner then went to the suicide squeeze and Quimby came through with a good bunt that scored Mulzet who was coming on the play.  The Tigers took a 5-2 lead into the final inning.

Senior righthander Mike Birsic came in to finish things and struck out the side to pick up the save.  It was a good non-section victory for the Tigers on Senior Day.  Coach Banner was able to play seventeen players in the contest.  For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior John Quimby as the Player of the Game on Senior Day.

With the win, the Tigers improved their overall record to 15-2 on the season.  NA will host Kiski Area in a section contest on Monday afternoon at the Senior High field.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

TIGER HOMERS TOO MUCH FOR SHALER AS TIGERS WIN, 5-3

Home runs by junior right fielder Harry Austin and senior shortstop John Quimby broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Tigers a 5-3 victory at rival Shaler on Wednesday afternoon.  Senior left hander Josh Hungerman went six innings allowing three hits and striking out seven to earn the victory.  Senior lefty Tim Merolillo pitched the seventh to earn the save.

The Tigers scored a pair of runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead.  NA added another run in the fifth, but Shaler shortstop Brian Bernardo answered with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.  In the top of the sixth, Austin led off the inning with a shot over the right field fence to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.  In the top of the seventh, Quimby hit his second home run of the year to increase the margin to 5-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, Merolillo came in to pitch in relief of Hungerman.  The Titans threatened when pitcher Brian Schwartbauer singled, Ryan Derbis walked and both runners moved up a base on a passed ball.  With no outs, the Titans had the middle of the batting order at the plater.  Merolillo got a ground out, foul out and a strike out to end the game with the Tigers holding on for a 5-3 win.

It was a good effort by both Merolillo and Austin who are coming off injuries.  Merolillo was hit in the head at practice on Tuesday while Austin was hit by a line drive off the bat of senior 1B Mike Juliano last week.  Both players came back at less than 100% but were able to make the big play when it was needed.

With the win, the Tigers opened a two-game lead over Shaler in the battle for the Section 1 crown.  The victory was the fifth straight by NA over Shaler.  The Tigers section record in now 8-0, the overall mark 13-1.  NA will travel to Fox Chapel tomorrow afternoon to meet the Foxes in a 4:00 pm section contest.
