They also ended the competition as the top men’s high school program in the country, finishing third in total men’s team points behind two private rowing clubs. The USRowing summer event, held at Eagle Creek Reservoir in Indianapolis, Indiana, attracted 1,200 athletes that included former, current and future national team rowers. The all-day event featured 29 summer rowing teams and clubs from four Eastern states and the District of Columbia. Braving oppressive humidity and temperatures that hovered near 90˚, high-school-aged rowers raced in a series of 22 sweep and sculling events. The Tigers qualified 22 of their 24 boats for finals and raced 19 of those. All 39 of NA’s competing rowers were part of the team’s optional summer sculling camp. Selected men’s crews will take part in the USRowing National Championship Regatta July 20 – 24 in Indianapolis. The Tigers will then be on break until school resumes. Sunday, June 12, 2005 by
Donna Hudson North Allegheny sent two women’s boats and one men’s boat
to the 2005 US Rowing National Youth Invitationals and all three came home
with Top Ten national rankings. The men’s junior quad of Rory Dahl, Joseph
Brendel, Andrew Kaiser and Singen Elliott finished first
in their qualifying heat and first in their semi-final and entered the
grand final as medal favorites. They
were in the lead when windy conditions caused them to catch an oar just
past the mid-point of the race, turning their boat off course and
resulting in a final standing of 6th place. The NA women took both first and second places in the
women’s junior quad petite final, giving them national rankings of 7th
and 8th in the event. In
the 7th place boat were Anna Crews, Briana Pittman,
Erin Dauson and Brittney Kelly.
Katie Hodnik, Megan Hudson, Sharon Dauson and Ali
Bogart crewed the 8th place boat. The two-day event, held on Lake Harsha near Cincinnati, Ohio,
brought together elite high school-aged rowers from schools and rowing
clubs across the country. Participation
was by invitation only and was based on achieving first or second place
medals in earlier regional competitions.
NA’s rowers earned their invitations in May at the Midwest
Scholastic Rowing Championships. US Rowing is a nonprofit organization recognized by the
United States Olympic Committee as the governing body for the sport of
rowing in the United States. This concludes an outstanding spring season for the North
Allegheny Rowing Team.
Summer camps for both current team members and interested
prospective rowers begin this week. See the team website, www.narowing.org
for details. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TWO NORTH ALLEGHENY ROWERS INVITED TO US ROWING NATIONAL CAMPS by Donna Hudson North Allegheny junior Joseph Brendel and sophomore Erin Dauson will be among a highly select group of rowers from across the United States who will be participating in USRowing national camps this summer. Brendel was one of 40 high school men from across the country invited to attend the Men's Junior National Team Selection Camp. The group will compete for spots of the 2005 USRowing Junior National Team that will race in the 2005 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships August 3-6 in Brandenburg, Germany. He was also invited to last year's selection camp, making it to the semi-final round of Junior National Team qualifiers. Dauson will head to the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT to join 40 other high school women at the USRowing Junior Women's National Team Development Camp. She will race in two summer regattas and will also compete to be one of 11 athletes who will represent the United States at the CanAmMex Regatta July 10-16 in Oak Ridge, TN. Brendel and Dauson continue NA's track record for producing top rowers. All six of this year's gratuating senior women have been recruited into college rowing, as have three of the five senior men, at schools including Dartmouth, Yale, Miami, Colgate, Duquesne, Mercyhurst, and Embry-Riddle * * * * * * * * * * * * * * NA ROWING ANNOUNCES FREE SUMMER CAMPS The North Allegheny Rowing Team will be hosting free summer camps for new rowers.
