LADY TIGERS UPSET BY TRINITY, 4-2, IN 13 INNINGS

Box Score

The Lady Tigers were upset by the Trinity Hillers, 4-2, in the WPIAL quarterfinals at Fairhaven Park on Wednesday night.  It took thirteen innings with the Hillers scoring three times in the top of the thirteenth to earn the victory.  Junior Sam Goettman homered for the Tigers to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Neither team threatened in the first inning.  In the top of the second, center fielder Megan Houston singled to left field to lead off.  After Houston was sacrificed to second, DH Kristen Zelenka singled to left moving Houston to third.  NA righthander Becca Rich ended the threat with a strikeout and a pop out.  In the bottom of the inning, senior 3B Dori Nunley led off with a base hit to left field.  After one out, sophomore CF Lauren Vrabel walked on four pitches.  After a strike out, Nunley was thrown out attempting to steal third.  The game was scoreless after two innings.

Trinity scored in the top of the third to take the lead.  After one out, second baseman Katelynn Falleroni doubled to right field.  After a ground out to the mound for the second out, shortstop Heather Bihler singled to left field to drive in Falleroni with game's first run.  Trinity took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the third.  After senior RF Sarah Piranian drew a walk, junior 1B Aimee Dassner hit a line drive into right center field but the ball was caught on a great diving catch by RF Lauren Yaquinto.  Pitcher Amanda Snoke got the final out of the inning on a pop fly.

Neither team threatened until the bottom of the sixth.  With one out, senior catcher Nicole Lenart doubled to right center field, but Snoke was able to record the next two outs to end the scoring opportunity.  The Lady Tigers finally tied the score in the bottom of the seventh when Goettman led off with a home run over the right center field fence.  Snoke retired the next three batters to send the game into extra innings tied at 1-1.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Lady Tigers had a great  chance to win the game.  Senior shortstop Amy Phillips led off with a single and Mel Boozel went in as a pinch runner.  After Nunley flied out to deep center field, Goettman reached on a fielder's choice.   With two outs, Vrabel drew a walk, and senior 2B Rachel Songer singled off the pitcher's glove to load the bases.  Piranian then hit a line drive that was caught by the shortstop to end the inning.

The Lady Tigers threatened again in the bottom of the tenth.  After two outs, Lenart lined a single to left and Phillips followed with another base hit to left field.  Once again, Snoke got out of the inning as Nunley flied out to right field.

In the bottom of the 12th, Dassner singled up the middle with two outs.  Lenart then beat out an infield single.  Phillips hit into a force play to end the threat.  Trinity finally broke through in the top of the 13th.  After LF Ashley Amistad reached on an error, she was sacrificed to second.  Falleroni followed with a base hit to center field scoring Amistad with an unearned run to make it 2-1.  After 1B Nikki Gillis reached on another NA error, Bihler singled up the middle scoring Falleroni to make it 3-1.  Dassner relieved Rich, and Houston singled to drive in Gillis to extend the lead to 4-1 before Dassner got the final out.

NA rallied in the bottom of the inning.  After Phillilps singled to lead off the inning, Nunley followed with a base hit to center moving Phillips to third.  Goettman grounded into a force play scoring Phillips as the Lady Tigers cut the lead to 4-2.  After Vrabel singled to center field, Songer followed with a short fly ball to center field that dropped in.  Vrabel had to hold up o see if the ball was caught and was forced at second.  Snoke got the final out on a pop up to the catcher as Trinity went home with the upset victory, 4-2.

It was a tough loss for the Lady Tigers who pounded out thirteen hits, but left 13 runners on base.  Two unearned runs were the difference.  Rich pitched well, striking out 15 in 12 2/3 innings of pitching.  With the loss, the Lady Tigers season came to an end with a final record of 14-4.  NA was the section champion and had earned the #1 seed in the WPIAL Tournament.

LADY TIGERS EDGE NORTH HILLS, 3-1, TO CLINCH SECTION TITLE

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Home runs by seniors Nicole Lenart and Dori Nunley led the Lady Tigers to a 3-1 victory over rival North Hills at the Senior High field on Monday afternoon.  Junior lefthander Aimee Dassner allowed only four hits and an unearned run while striking out eleven in earning the victory.  With the win, the Lady Tigers clinched the Section 3-AAAA title.

After Dassner retired the side in order in the top of the first, the Lady Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the inning.  With two outs, Lenart hit a drive over the left field fence into the bleachers to give NA a 1-0 advantage after one inning.

In the top of the second, DP Nicole Tschannen reached on an error with two outs, but Dassner struck out catcher Ang Heintz to end the threat.  In the bottom of the inning, junior catcher Sam Goettman walked with one out.  After junior Ali Morse went in as a courtesy runner, senior 2B Rachel Songer followed with a single to short left.  Sophomore first baseman Lauren Vrabel then hit a hard ground ball to NH Maura Wahl who touched second for the second out of the inning.  Her return throw to try to get Vrabel was low and rolled away allowing Morse to score an unearned run.  After two innings, the Lady Tigers held a 2-0 lead.

North Hills threatened in the top of the third.  With two outs, right fielder Louanne Wiegand singled to left field and Wahl walked.  Dassner again used the strike out pitch to get out of the inning without the Indians scoring.  North Hills did score, however, in the top of the fourth.  After senior pitcher Becca Nachreiner singled off the right center field fence, 3B Kelly Cummings sacrificed her to second.  After a strike out for the second out, Heintz lined a single to left that bounced off the glove of the NA left fielder allowing pinch runner Catie Sieber to score an unearned run.  NA still led, 2-1, after three and one half innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, Nunley wasted no time in getting the run back as she lined the first pitch over the right center field fence for her fifth home run of the year to give the Lady Tigers a 3-1 lead.  Goettman followed with a single and pinch runner Morse stole second.  Nachreiner was able to get the next three NA batters, however, to keep the Lady  Tigers from scoring.  After four innings, NA held a 3-1 lead.

After Dassner retired the side in order in the top of the first, junior left fielder Brittany Bennett singled to lead off the bottom of the inning.  After Bennett stole second, Nachreiner again was able to get the next three NA hitters, two on strike outs.  In the top of the sixth, shortstop Megan Hollyfield led off with a line drive single up the middle.  Dassner then retired the next three, striking out two, to hold the 3-1 NA advantage.  In the bottom of the sixth, Nunley reached on an infield single and stole second.  Nachreiner again retired three in a row to keep the Tigers off the board.

Dassner got the Indians one-two-three in the top of the seventh.  Fittingly, the NA lefty struck out the last two NH batters to preserve the victory.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Aimee Dassner as the Player of the Game.

The victory gave NA a final section record of 9-1, and a final overall mark of 14-3 as the wait for the playoff pairings.  The WPIAL playoffs are tentatively scheduled to begin next week but stay tuned!  We will post the latest playoff information when we receive it.

SENECA VALLEY STOPS LADY TIGERS, 2-1

Box Score

The Tigers traveled to Seneca Valley on Saturday afternoon for the Seneca version of Senior Day and were defeated by the Raiders, 2-1.  Junior catcher Sam Goettman had two hits including a home run and junior pitcher Aimee Dassner added a pair of hits for NA but the Raiders were able to hold on for the victory.

In the top of the first, Dassner singled but the Lady Tigers could not move her around to score.  In the bottom of the first, left fielder Julie Marlowe reached on an error to lead off the inning.  After CF Liz Dorogy walked, shortstop Ali Intihar sacrificed both runners up a base.  Catcher Tina Mangola followed with a base hit driving in Marlowe with an unearned run.  After Mangola stole second, first baseman Courtney Grootegoed walked to load the bases.  Second baseman Jackie Mangola lined a shot to senior shortstop Amy Phillips who threw to senior Steph Hillenbrand at second base to complete the double play and end the inning.  The Raiders took a 1-0 lead into the second inning.

With one out in the top of the second, Goettman hit a mammoth home run over the scoreboard in center field to tie the game at 1-1.  After two outs, Hillenbrand singled but was stranded.  In the bottom of the inning, the Raiders answered.  Third baseman Nicole Lollo opened with a single and went to second on a wild pitch.  After a strike out, pitcher Megan Wise beat out a slow grounder moving Lollo to third.  When Marlowe popped up to Dassner on the mound, the NA pitcher threw to first to try to double Wise.  The Raider runner was ruled safe at first with Lollo scoring on the play.  The Raiders took a 2-1 lead that would hold up for the remainder of the game.

Both teams had limited scoring opportunities in the last five innings.  In the bottom of the third, Grootegoed doubled with two outs, but Dassner got a ground out to end the inning.  In the top of the fourth with one out, Goettman doubled.  The Raiders ended the threat when sophomore Lauren Vrabel grounded out and courtesy runner Lindsay Cassidy was tagged out trying to get to third.  Grootegoed came in to relieve Wise in the top of the sixth and retired the final six NA batters to preserve the victory.

It was a good effort by Seneca Valley on Senior Day.  The Lady Tigers have already clinched a tie for the section title and hold the tie-breaker, but a further consideration would be the seeding for the upcoming WPIAL tournament.  NA Head Coach Rick Meister would like to finish the season with a victory against rival North Hills on Monday afternoon to give the Lady Tigers undisputed possession of first place in section.

With the loss, the Lady Tigers dropped to 8-1 in section play, 13-3 overall.  The Lady Tigers will host rival North Hills on Monday afternoon at the Senior High field in the final section game of the season.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 4:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 5:00 pm.

DASSNER HOLDS LATROBE TO FOUR HITS IN  5-0 VICTORY

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Junior Aimee Dassner pitched her second consecutive shutout in leading the Lady Tigers to a 5-0 victory over Latrobe at the Senior High field on Tuesday afternoon.  Senior 3B Dori Nunley hit her fourth home run of the season, and senior right fielder Sarah Piranian had a two-run double to pace NA.

In the top of the first, right fielder Madison Palmer reached on an error and stole second base.  Dassner then got the next three outs to keep the game scoreless.  In the bottom of the first, senior CF Nicole Lenart doubled to deep right center field with two outs but was stranded.  In the top of the second, pitcher Jenna Pennesi beat out a bunt single and went to second on a throwing error.  Once again, Dassner stopped the Wildcats without scoring.  In the bottom of the second, Nunley hit the first pitch over the right center field fence to give NA a 1-0 advantage.  With one out, second baseman Rachel Songer doubled off the right field fence but did not score.

Dassner got the side out in order the next four innings, thanks to junior catcher Sam Goettman who nailed two Latrobe runners trying to steal.  In the bottom of the third, the Lady Tigers added another run.  After junior Brittany Bennett beat out an infield single, Dassner sacrificed her to second.  After Lenart was thrown out at first on a ground out, Bennett beat the return throw to third and raced home when the throw got away.  The unearned run gave NA a 2-0 lead after three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Tigers scored three times off relief pitcher Alexa Bryson to take control of the game.  After Nunley singled to right field, she went to second on a wild pitch.  Goettman followed with a line drive single to right field moving Nunley to third.  After pinch runner Lauren Vrabel stole second, senior 2B Steph Hillenbrand dropped down a bunt.  The throw to the plate was late, allowing Nunley to score and Vrabel to move to third and Hillenbrand to second.  Piranian then came through with a line drive double down the right field line that scored both runners.  NA held a 5-0 advantage after four innings.

Neither team threatened in the fifth or sixth innings.  In the top of the seventh, pinch hitter Lauren Taylor singled to lead off.  Taylor was then called out for leaving base early on a steal attempt for the first out of the inning.  After a ground out, first baseman Stefanie Sapone singled.  Dassner ended the game when Pennesi grounded back to the mound for an easy out at first base.

It was another good team effort by the Lady Tigers.  Once again, Head Coach Rick Meister was able to get his entire bench into the game.  For her efforts at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Dori Nunley as the Player of the Game.

With the victory, the Lady Tigers improved their overall record to 12-2 on the season.  NA will travel to Hempfield tomorrow afternoon to meet the Spartans in a non-section contest.  Game time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

GOETTMAN'S HOME RUNS POWER LADY TIGERS OVER FOX CHAPEL, 14-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Junior DH Sam Goettman slammed a pair of home runs to lead the Lady Tigers to a 14-1 victory over Fox Chapel at the Senior High field on Monday afternoon.  Senior catcher Nicole Lenart had four hits including two doubles in the victory.  Senior pitcher Becca Rich allowed only one hit in picking up her eighth victory against just one loss.

The Foxes took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  After leadoff hitter 3B Alicia Miksic walked, second baseman Carrie DeStout sacrificed her to second.  Rich got catcher Jessica Smith on strikes but a wild pitch moved Miksic to third.  With two outs, center fielder Caroline Heffernan singled to right center field to score Miksic to give Fox Chapel a 1-0 advantage after one-half inning.

In the bottom of the first, the Lady Tigers tied the game.  After the first two batters were retired, Lenart hit a hard single through third baseman Miksic.  After Lenart stole second, senior shortstop Amy Phillips drew a walk.  Senior 3B Dori Nunley followed with a base hit to left scoring Lenart who used some fancy footwork to finally touch home plate.  After one inning, the game was tied at 1-1.

The Lady Tigers took the lead with a run in the bottom of the second.  Once again the first two batters were retired.  After senior RF Sarah Piranian singled to left center field, she stole second.  Junior LF Brittany Bennett came through with a line drive single to right field to score Piranian and give NA a 2-1 advantage after two innings.

In the bottom of the third, NA broke the game open with a seven-run outburst.   Lenart opened with a single down the left field line and was sacrificed to second by Phillips.  Nunley followed with a line drive single to left moving Lenart to third.  Goettman hit a three-run shot over the left center field fence to give NA a 5-1 lead.  After sophomore CF Lauren Vrabel walked, senior 2B Rachel Songer beat out a bunt single.  After Piranian walked, Bennett hit a hard ground ball to short that bounced off the shortstop into left center field with two runs scoring.  Junior first baseman Aimee Dassner followed with a base hit to left center to score Piranian with the eighth NA run.  Lenart completed the scoring with a double down the right field line as the Lady Tigers took a commanding 9-1 lead into the fourth inning.

Rich continued to retire the Foxes, allowing only one walk after the first inning.  In the bottom of the fourth, Goettman led off with her second home run of the game, a line drive over the left center field fence.  After the next two batters were out, Piranian singled to deep short for her second hit of the game.  Bennett followed with a ground ball up the middle, and Dassner beat out an infield hit to load the bases.  Lenart hit a drive to deep left field for a double to score two more runs and give NA a 12-1 lead.  When Phillips' fly ball was dropped in center field, two more runs scored as the Lady Tigers led, 14-1, after four innings.

In the top of the fifth, DP Chelsea Dabrowski opened with a walk.  After Rich struck out the next batter, Miksic lined a shot along the first base line that junior 1B Stephanie Smith caught with a leaping catch and stepped on first base for the game ending double play.

It was a total team effort with the Lady Tigers pounding out 16 hits in support of the one-hit pitching of Rich.  For her efforts at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Sam Goettman as the Player of the Game.

The win improved the NA section record to 8-0, the overall mark to 12-2.  The Lady Tigers will be back in action again this afternoon when they host Latrobe in a non-section contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.

LADY TIGERS, MONTOUR BATTLE TO SCORELESS TIE

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

It was Senior Night at the Senior High softball field on Friday evening, but junior lefthander Aimee Dassner stole the spotlight as she struck out 10 Montour batters in a 0-0 tie with the Spartans.  The game was called because of darkness after seven innings of play.  Senior shortstop Amy Phillips had the only NA hit against Montour pitcher Julie Koman.

In the top of the first with one out, second baseman Katie Wills reached on an NA error.  Koman followed with a single to center field.  Dassner got out of the jam with two strikeouts to keep the game scoreless after one half inning.  The Spartans threatened again in the top of the second.  With one out, LF Allie Babish grounded a single between short and third.  Shortstop Natalie Goerl beat out a single to deep short.  After a strike out, center fielder Sarah Capp  also reached on an infield hit to load the bases.  Once again, Dassner got out of trouble with a key strike out to end the inning.

After the second inning, Dassner allowed only one further hit as she controlled the Spartans for the remainder of the game.  The Lady Tigers had no success against Koman.  NA went up and down in order the first four innings.  Leading off the bottom of the fifth, Phillips lined a shot off the glove of shortstop Goerl to reach base with no outs.  After a line drive from the bat of junior catcher Sam Goettman was caught in right center field by Kennedy, senior first baseman Rachel Songer sacrificed Phillips to second.  After Phillips moved to third on a wild pitch, senior 2B Steph Hillenbrand hit a one-hopper right back to Koman who threw to first to end the threat.

In the top of the seventh, a Tiger error gave the Spartans a chance.  With one out, Goerl reached when her ground ball could not be played.  After Kennedy sacrificed Goerl to second, Dassner got Capp on a pop up to the mound to send the game into the bottom of the seventh scoreless.

In the bottom of the seventh, senior center fielder Nicole Lenart gave the NA fans hope.  After just missing a home run down the left field line, Lenart hit a long drive to the fence in center field but Capp was able to make the catch.  Koman was able to get a ground out to end the inning and end the game.

It was an old-time pitchers' duel for the entire contest.  Neither pitcher walked a batter and the two hurlers combined for a total of 18 strikeouts.  If not for darkness, the game might have continued for a long time.  For her efforts on the mound, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Aimee Dassner as the Player of the Game.

The tie will not be replayed since it was a non-section game.  The Lady Tigers will be back in action again on Monday afternoon when they host the Fox Chapel Foxes in a section contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

LENART, RICH LEAD LADY TIGERS OVER SHALER, 3-1

Box Score

In a battle for first place in Section 3-AAAA, the Lady Tigers defeated Shaler, 3-1, at Hilltop Field in Shaler on Thursday afternoon to open a two-game lead over the Titans.  Senior catcher Nicole Lenart hit a two-run homer in the first inning while senior righthander Becca Rich limited the Titans to six hits and one run.  Junior CF Brittany Bennett drove in the other NA run with a base hit in the fourth inning.

The Lady Tigers started quickly in the top of the first inning.  Junior third baseman Lauren Vrabel led off with a double to the left center field fence.  After junior 1B Aimee Dassner sacrificed Vrabel to third, Lenart hit a 2-2 pitch over the left center field fence to give NA a 2-0 lead after one half inning.  Rich retired the side in order in the bottom of the first.

In the bottom of the second, Shaler had a runner on second with one out but could not score.  Neither team threatened in the third inning.

In the top of the fourth, senior shortstop Amy Phillips singled down the left field line to lead off the inning.  After a double play by the Titans, senior left fielder Rachel Songer reached on an error.  Senior 2B Steph Hillenbrand followed with a single to center moving Songer to second.  Bennett then singled to left field to score Songer and give NA a 3-0 lead after three and one half innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Titans got on the board.  After DH Heather Elstner walked, Val Smolter came in to run.  Second baseman Ashley Scanga doubled to left center field scoring Smolter and cutting the NA lead to 3-1.  Right fielder Jen Simile followed with a single to left center field but Bennett threw out Scanga trying to advance to third on the hit.  Left fielder Kaitlyn Kline singled to left to keep the rally going.  Rich got out of the inning with two ground balls to end the rally and keep the Lady Tigers ahead, 3-1, after four innings.

After the Lady Tigers went down in order in the top of the fifth, Shaler threatened again.  With one out, 3B Jen Popinski singled to short left.  Center fielder Lia Sorce followed with a base hit to left field.  Once again, Rich stopped Shaler from scoring getting a pop up and ground out to end the inning.

The Titans had one last chance in the bottom of the seventh.  With one out, first baseman Melissa McQuade lined to right field, but senior right fielder Sarah Piranian made a strong throw to first base to retire McQuade for the second  out.  After Popinski singled to left field, Rich ended the game by getting Sorce to pop up to Dassner at first.  The Lady Tigers came away with a hard-earned 3-1 victory.

The win improved the NA section record to 7-0, the overall mark to 11-2 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will host Montour this afternoon in a 5:00 pm non-section game.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 4:50 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 5:00 pm.

WPIAL SOFTBALL - 2005

The Lady Tigers will compete in Class AAAA this year along with 25 other teams.  The top three teams and ties will enter the WPIAL Tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best won/lost record.  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and both will be declared co-champions and each will receive a section winner's plaque.  Those two teams will enter the tournament and the second place team will enter as the third section representative.  In the event of a tie for second and third place, the tiebreaker system will be employed.  If the tie persists, head to head competition will determine the qualifier.  In the event of multiple ties the following tiebreaker will be employed:

a.  Section won-lost records of the tied teams will be compiled.
b.  The team with the best numerical record among the tied teams will enter post-season play.
c.  If the tie cannot clearly be broken, all tied teams will enter post-season play.

The two (2) WPIAL finalists in Quad A will represent the WPIAL in PIAA inter-district play.

Postponed games must be played in order of postponement and scheduled on the first common available date.  Make up section games must have preference over exhibition games, JV and junior high games.  All games postponed during the first half of the season must be rescheduled and played prior to the beginning of the second half.

During all WPIAL competition, any game that is interrupted by bad weather prior to becoming a legal game will be resumed at that point and concluded on the next available playing date.

The Ten Run/Fifteen Run Rule will be in effect for all WPIAL softball games.  It reads:

If a team is ahead by ten runs or more at the end of five innings the game shall be terminated.  This also means if the home team is ahead by ten runs after four and one-half innings, the game will be terminated.  Thereafter, if one team should go ahead by ten runs, the same rule must apply.
