TIGERS FINISH THIRD AT PIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Tigers were defeated by the Norwin Knights, 3-1, in the semifinals of the PIAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Rec Hall at Penn State.  NA had defeated District 1 Champion Souderton, 3-0, in the quarterfinals earlier in the day.

In pool play, the Tigers finished in first place in Pool C with victories over William Tennent, Northeastern, and Taylor Allderdice.  NA piled up a record of 8-1 in taking the top spot.  Leading the way for the Tigers was senior OH Nick Overbaugh with 30 kills, 18 perfect passes, 16 digs, and six service aces.  At the net senior MH Dan Osterrieder posted 19 kills while seniors Adam Rector and Chris McKim had 10 kills each.  In the back, senior DS Chad King had 14 perfect passes and seven digs while senior OH Mike Nypaver added 10 perfect passes and nine digs.  Senior setter Steve Nicola has 25 assists and 8 digs while senior setter Shane Conley had 21 assists and 9 digs.  Senior Derek Foy and Kevin Moskal each had three service aces.

In the quarterfinals, the Tigers won three straight from Souderton winning the first game 25-17, game two 25-21 and game three, 25-20.  All three games were close until the midway point when NA took control.  Statistically, Overbaugh again posted top numbers with 8 kills, 9 perfect passes and 9 digs.  Nypaver recorded 7 perfect passes, 3 digs, and two service aces while Nicola had 10 assists and 4 digs.  At the net, Osterrieder had 10 kills, McKim added 6 kills and 5 blocks, with junior MH Russ Hoburg recording 4 kills.  Conley had 16 assists with senior OH Josh Leroux registering two service aces in the victory.

In the semifinals, the Tigers and Knights battled on even terms for most of the match, but Norwin was able to edge NA.  The Tigers won the first game, 25-19, but dropped game two, 25-21.  Games three and four could have gone either way with the Knights pulling out tough 26-24 and 27-25 victories.  NA had a 20-14 lead in game three but could not hold the lead.  Osterrieder was the big gun for NA with 8 kills, 3 blocks, 5 perfect passes and 7 digs.  Overbaugh posted 15 kills and 9 perfect passes while McKim had nine kills.  At the net, Conley added six kills, Rector five kills, and Hoburg seven kills and 2 blocks.  Nypaver had 17 perfect passes.

It was a great season for the Tigers who came up just short of the PIAA title.  NA finished with a record of 21-2 and the WPIAL Championship!

TIGERS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT WPIAL TITLE

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

After losing the first game, 25-23, to Norwin, the Tigers rallied to take three straight from the Knights to win their third consecutive WPIAL Championship.  Once again, the Tiger hitters came up big with the senior trio of Dan Osterrieder, Nick Overbaugh, and Shane Conley leading NA to the victory.

The teams played on even terms early in game one.  Kills by Overbaugh, junior Russ Hoburg, and Osterrieder on a quick set gave NA a 5-4 lead. After Brendan Jalosky tied the game with a hit off the NA blockers, the Knights went on a 5-1 run behind the hitting of Mike Ferragonio and several hitting errors by the Tigers.  Norwin would never trail in the game despite strong play from senior Chris McKim . Despite three kills from McKim, Norwin increased the lead to 14-8 as the Tigers continued to make mistakes.  Service errors hurt NA as they committed four in game one.  With Norwin up 20-15, Ferragonio went out with an injury.  The Tigers rallied at this point as Overbaugh served an ace, Osterrieder scored on another quick set, and McKim recorded a kill as NA cut the lead to 21-19.  Brad Bouldin gave the Knights a three-point lead with a kill and WPIAL MVP Ryan Obeldobel scored on a two-handed push to make it 23-19.  Osterrieder hit a smash down the middle and a Norwin hitting error cut the margin to 23-21.  After Kevin Beardsley scored off the NA blockers, senior Mike Nypaver went down the middle to cut the lead to 24-22.  Osterrieder brought the Tigers to within a point, but Dan Sprumont got the game winner as Norwin took game one, 25-23.

In game two, the Tigers fell behind early, 5-2, as Ferragonio returned to the contest.  A strong hit by Hoburg, a kill by Conley and Osterrieder on a quick set gave NA a 6-6 tie.  After Norwin regained the lead at 8-7, senior Josh Leroux tied the game and a kill by Overbaugh and several Norwin hitting errors gave the Tigers an 11-8 lead.  NA continued to force the issue and extended the lead to 17-10 with Overbaugh, Osterrieder, and senior Adam Rector leading the way.  Good blocking by Osterrieder and Rector and then by Osterrieder and Conley pushed the margin to 19-12 before Norwin rallied for three straight points.  The Tigers would not be denied down the stretch, however, with Conley scoring off the Norwin blockers, Overbaugh picking up a pair of kills and the Knights contributing several hitting errors.  With the score, 24-21, Osterrieder hit the back line with the game winner as the Tigers tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-21 victory in game two.

In the crucial third game, the Tigers took control early. After Norwin jumped off to a 2-0 lead, Conley served six straight points including an ace as NA took a 7-2 lead.  Overbaugh had two kills and put back a Norwin overpass with McKim adding a kill during the run.  Senior setter Steve Nicola got into the action at the net with a kill and a block, and the Tigers added kills from McKim, Nypaver, Hoburg and Osterrieder as they pushed the lead to 14-5.  After four straight Norwin points, Osterrieder scored again on a quick set to stop the run.  A block by Osterrieder and Conley pushed the lead to 17-9.  The Tigers again controlled the action down the stretch with Conley recording a kill, Leroux serving an ace, and Overbaugh scoring on a smash down the middle as the NA lead went to 20-11.  After the Knights rallied to cut the margin to 22-15, Overbaugh hit the back line, the Knights committed a hitting error, and senior Kevin Moskal ended game three with a kill as the Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-16 victory.

In the fourth game, the Knights fought back in the early going to keep things close.  After the Tigers had built an early 5-3 lead on hits by Nicola, Osterrieder, McKim, and Hoburg, Norwin scored three straight to take a 6-5 lead.  The teams exchanged points until Overbaugh put the Tigers ahead, 10-9, with a kill.  After Conley served an ace, McKim scored with a strong hit just inside the back line and Hoburg went off the Norwin blockers as the Tigers extended the margin to 15-10.  Bouldin brought the Knights back to within two at 15-13, but the Tigers were not to be denied.  A block by McKim, a kill by Osterrieder, and an ace by Nicola extended the margin to 19-14 forcing Norwin to call a time out.  The Knights were able to cut the lead to three at 20-17, but once again the Tigers were invincible down the stretch.  A dink by Conley hit the line, Overbaugh scored again off the Norwin blockers, and a hitting error by the Knights put NA ahead, 23-17.  After a kill by Bouldin, a lift was called against the Knights that put NA at game and match point.  Fittingly, Overbaugh ended things with a hit down the middle to give the Tigers a 25-19 victory in game four, and a victory in the match, three games to one.

Statistically, the Tigers were led by Overbaugh who posted 16 kills, 14 perfect passes, 9 digs and three blocks.  Osterrieder registered 13 kills, 7 perfect passes, three blocks and six digs while Conley had 10 kills, 2 blocks, 11 digs, 8 assists and 2 service aces.  At the net, Hoburg recorded seven kills and two blocks, McKim posted 9 kills and two blocks, and Rector had two blocks.  In the back, Nypaver had 14 perfect passes and 6 digs, King had six perfect passes, Schmidt had five perfect passes, and Nicola had six assists.

It was a great team victory for the Tigers of Coach Dan Schall.  After some early hitting and service errors, the Tigers put it all together in the final three games to nail down the championship.  The North Allegheny Sports Network selected three seniors as the Players of the Match - Dan Osterrieder, Nick Overbaugh, and Shane Conley.  All three were selected to the first team of the WPIAL All-Stars as announced between games.

With the win, the Tigers qualified for the PIAA Tournament to be held at Penn State on Friday and Saturday.  Preliminary round action will begin on Friday with the top two from each pool advancing to the quarterfinals on Saturday.  The remaining three rounds will be played on Saturday.

FOX CHAPEL FALLS TO TIGERS IN THREE

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

Coach Dan Schall's Tigers advanced to the championship match of the WPIAL Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Fox Chapel at Pine-Richland High School on Wednesday night.  The Tigers controlled the net with strong play by senior OH Nick Overbaugh and senior MH Dan Osterrieder.  The Tigers won the first game, 25-13, took game two, 25-14, and dominated the Foxes in game three, 25-14, to win going away.

The Tigers started quickly in game one as senior setter Shane Conley opened the contest with two consecutive serving aces.  Senior MH Chris McKim and Overbaugh had big hits as the NA opened a 4-1 lead.  After the Foxes cut the margin to 4-3 with a kill by junior Mark Meinert, a cross-court hit by senior Adam Rector and a block by Osterrieder pushed the margin to 7-4.  Kills by Conley and Osterrieder pushed the margin to 9-5 before junior Eric Caplan answered for the Foxes.  The Tigers continued to apply pressure with Overbaugh scoring off the FC blockers, Conley serving another ace, and Rector driving a kill down the line as the NA lead went to 13-8.  The Tigers increased the margin to 18-9 with Rector and Osterrieder combining on a block, junior Russ Hoburg picking up a kill and several Fox Chapel hitting errors.  After junior Nick Rivett and sophomore Seth Katich scored kills for the Foxes to cut the lead to 19-12, the Tigers went on a 6-1 run to finish the game.  Senior OH Mike Nypaver served a pair of points, senior Chad King picked up a service ace, and Overbaugh put the Foxes away with a block for the final point as NA won game one, 25-13.

In game two, the Foxes played tough early to stay in the contest.  After the Tigers built a 5-1 lead behind kills from Overbaugh and senior Josh Leroux and a dink from Rector, the Foxes rallied to tie the score at 6-6.  After an Osterrieder kill and a FC hitting error put NA back on top, 8-6, Caplan scored twice on a kill and a dink to tie the game at 8-8.  A cross-court smash by Hoburg and two Fox Chapel hitting errors gave NA an 11-8 advantage, and the Foxes could never catch up.  Overbaugh went down the line and down the middle for a pair of kills but Caplan and Rivett answered for the Foxes as the score went to 14-11.  NA then went on an 8-2 run to take control of the game.  Osterrieder was the key player in the run with a cross-court kill and two blocks as the Tigers took a 22-13 lead.  With the Tigers up 24-14, Hoburg ended game two with a dink to give the Tigers a 25-14 win in game two, and a 2-0 advantage in the match.

After the Foxes stayed close early in game three, trailing only by a 4-3 count, the Tigers scored nine straight points to take a 13-3 lead.  It was a combination of good hitting by McKim, Hoburg, Rector and Osterrieder and a number of FC misplays as the Tigers took command.  After the Foxes cut the lead to 14-7, NA scored five straight on an ace by Leroux, a kill by senior opposite Kevin Moskal, a kill by Osterrieder on a FC overpass, and a smash by Overbaugh down the middle.  The Foxes came back on kills by Rivett to cut the lead to 19-10.  A Fox Chapel hitting error and a block by McKim pushed the margin to 21-10.  After the Foxes cut the lead to 24-14, Osterrieder ended the game and the match with a kill as the Tigers won game three, 25-14, and the match, three games to none.

It was an impressive performance by the Tigers who got contributions from a number of players.  The service errors that hurt NA in the quarterfinals were not there against Fox Chapel as the Tigers served well.  Good sets by both Conley and senior Steve Nicola gave the NA hitters plenty of opportunities and they converted.  For his efforts at the net and behind the serving line, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior Nick Overbaugh as the Player of the Match.

Statistically, Overbaugh led the way with 10 kills, seven digs, and 6 perfect passes to target.  Osterrieder added six kills and six blocks, Hoburg had 2 kills, 2 blocks, and 3 perfect passes, and Rector recorded five kills and 2 blocks.  Senior Derick Schmidt was strong in the back with 7 digs, 3 perfect passes and two service aces.  Conley had ten assists, 6 digs and four service aces while Nicola recorded ten assists and 4 digs.  The Tigers had eight service aces in the match.

With the win, the Tigers advanced to the championship match.  NA will go for their third consecutive WPIAL title tomorrow night when they meet #1 seed Norwin.  The match will be played at Plum High School with the starting time set for 8:00 pm.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the match LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:45 pm.

TIGERS ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS WITH 3-0 WIN OVER AMBRIDGE

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

The Tigers knocked off Ambridge in three games at Montour on Monday in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL Tournament.  The Tigers controlled the Bridgers, 25-16, in game one, held off an Ambridge rally, 25-21, in game two, and finished off the Bridgers, 25-16, in game three.  The NA front line was too strong for Ambridge for most of the contest with seniors Dan Osterrieder, Nick Overbaugh, Adam Rector, and junior Russ Hoburg doing most of the damage.

Osterrieder set the tone for the match with a big hit to give NA a 1-0 lead.  After Ambridge came back to tie the game at 3-3, the Tigers took the lead for good at 4-3.  A serving ace by senior DS Steve Westhead, along with a pair of kills by Hoburg, were part of a 7-4 run that pushed the lead to 10-7.  With senior OH Josh Leroux serving, a kill by Osterrieder, along with a cross-court smash by Overbaugh, pushed the margin to 13-8.  Kills by senior Chris McKim and Overbaugh extended the lead to 17-11, and two Ambridge hitting errors gave NA a 19-12 advantage.  Hoburg and Osterrieder combined on a block and Rector recorded a kill as the lead went to 21-13.  Osterrieder was there to put away a Bridger overpass before sophomore Chris Voorman answered for the Bridgers.  After a kill by senior Shane Conley, junior Matt Sutton kept Ambridge alive at 24-16.  An attempt by sophomore Charlie Goodell hit the antenna, and the Tigers had won game one, 25-16.  The game, and the match, was marred by service errors by both teams, but NA held a 1-0 lead after the first game.

In game two, Ambridge made it closer.  The Tigers got off to a good start behind a pair of serving aces by Conley and another by Overbaugh to give NA a 4-2 advantage.  Osterrieder picked up two kills, one on a quick set, but Goodell answered to bring the Bridgers to within one at 6-5.  Junior Louis Archilla came off the Ambridge bench to score off the NA blockers and a dink by junior OH Rick Beeman gave Ambridge the lead at 8-7.  A kill by Osterrieder and two more from Overbaugh put the Tigers back in front, 10-8, but Ambridge scored three straight on NA hitting errors to retake an 11-10 lead.  The teams exchanged points with kills by Overbaugh and Rector finally pushing the Tigers ahead, 15-13.  A serving ace by Overbaugh made it 16-13, but Ambridge scored four straight to regain the lead at 17-16.  After Rector tied the score on a quick set from senior Steve Nicola, Sutton went cross court to put the Bridgers back ahead, 18-17.  The Tigers then took control with four straight as Rector scored on a dink, Osterrieder picked up two points on a kill and a block, and the Bridgers committed a hitting error to give NA a 22-18 advantage.  After an NA violation, Osterrieder made it 23-19 with a big hit.  With the Tigers up 24-21, Conley put the Bridgers away with a hit off the blockers as the Tigers won a hard-fought game two, 25-21.

Ambridge could not keep pace with the Tigers in game three.  Early hits by Rector, McKim, and Hoburg, along with a block by Osterrieder and Rector, gave NA a 5-2 lead.  Kills by Hoburg and Conley, along with a Bridger hitting error, increased the margin to 9-3.  A kill by Hoburg and another Ambridge misplay made it 11-4 before junior James Pride came off the bench to serve an ace.  Overbaugh went off the Bridger blockers and McKim went down the middle as the Tigers took a 14-8 lead.  NA continued to control the contest as a kill by Hoburg and a pair by Osterrieder helped extend the lead to 19-11.  Sutton and junior T.J. Daniels brought the Bridgers back to 20-14, but the Tigers were not to be denied.  A kill by Overbaugh and a block by McKim, along with a hitting error by Ambridge, put the Tigers at game and match point, 24-16.  Conley ended the game and the match with a strong hit off the Ambridge front line blockers as the Tigers took game three, 25-16, and the match, three games to none.

Once again, it was a good team effort by the Tigers.  Good setting by Conley and Nicola continued to give the NA hitters good looks all night as the Tigers improved their overall record to 15-1.  For his consistent effort throughout the match, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior Dan Osterrieder as the Player of the Match.

With the win the Tigers advanced to the semifinals against Fox Chapel, a 3-2 winner over Upper St. Clair.  The match will be played tomorrow night with the site and time to be announced.  We will post the info as soon as receive it.

TIGERS CRUSH NORTH HILLS, 3-0, TO FINISH SECTION SEASON UNBEATEN

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

TIGERS ROUT PINE-RICHLAND, 3-0

To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

The Tigers dominated the Pine-Richland Rams in a 3-0 victory at the Senior High gym on Thursday night.  Outstanding setting by seniors Shane Conley and Steve Nicola gave the powerful NA front line numerous opportunities.  With the chances, seniors Dan Osterrieder, Nick Overbaugh, Adam Rector, Mike Nypaver, and junior Russ Hoburg were dominant at the net for the winning Tigers.

The Tigers took control early in game one.  After a 2-2 tie, Nypaver put NA ahead for good with a kill, and a net violation made it a 4-2 advantage.  After the Rams cut the lead to 4-3,  another kill by Nypaver off the Ram blockers, a kill by Overbaugh on a Ram overpass, a kill by Osterrieder on a quick set, and a big hit by Hoburg pushed the margin to 11-5.  The Tigers continued to dominate at the net with Hoburg picking up another two kills, Overbaugh adding a kill down the line, and the Rams committing a pair of hitting errors and a net violation as the NA lead ballooned to 16-6.  Conley then picked up a point on a dink, another on a service ace, as the Rams continued to make mistakes as the Tiger lead increased to 19-7.  After Ram senior RS Cole Gorman went off the NA blockers for a point, Rector scored on a dink.  Three more Ram mistakes made it 23-8.  After a lift was called on NA, Nypaver's kill set up game point for senior DS Derick Schmidt.  When the Rams misplayed the serve, the Tigers had won game one, 25-9.

In the second game, the Rams played better early in the match.  After Gorman and junior MH Jeff Thompson gave P-R at 2-0 lead, Rector answered with a kill and Overbaugh with a service ace to tie the score at 2-2.  After the teams exchanged points, Osterrieder sent back a Ram overpass for a point and then followed with a blast down the line.  The Rams came back to cut the lead to 5-4 before NA went on another run.  Osterrieder scored on a quick set down the middle, on a block, and combined with Conley for another block to push the lead to 8-4.  Senior OH Josh Leroux then added a kill, and, after a Ram point by sophomore Kevin Rowlands, Osterrieder added another kill to make it 10-5.  Nypaver followed with a pair of aces followed by two Overbaugh kills and another Osterrieder block as the Tigers increased the lead to 15-6.  After two straight Ram points, Overbaugh came back with two kills, one on a cross-court smash, as the Tiger lead increased to 18-9.  Leroux added a pair of points on dinks before the Tigers committed a pair of hitting errors as the score went to 22-13.  A kill by junior OH Brett Alexander, a hitting error by the Rams, and a kill by Osterrieder ended game two as the Tigers prevailed, 25-14.

In game three, Coach Dan Schall went to his bench to give some of the younger Tiger players varsity game experience.  Early in the game, the Rams built a 4-1 lead behind the hitting of Thompson with Hoburg picking up the lone NA point.  After both teams committed hitting errors, Alexander went off the Ram blockers to tie the game at 7-7.  Rowlands led a brief Ram rally with a pair of points to give P-R a 10-7 advantage.  At this point, Coach Schall brought back several starters.  After another Alexander kill, Conley scored on a left-handed tip and Osterrieder added a kill and a block as the Tigers took an 11-10 lead.  A hitting error and another Osterrieder block pushed the lead to 13-10 before senior MH Luke Roth answered to cut it to 13-11.  Osterrieder scored on a quick set and Hoburg added another kill before senior MH Matt McKay scored off the NA blockers to cut the lead to 15-13.  Hoburg scored on a kill and a block and Osterrieder served an ace as the lead increased to 18-13.  Roth sparked a Ram rally that cut the margin to 18-17 before Rector answered with a blast right down the middle.  The Tigers then went on to score the final five points, four on hitting errors by the Rams, to win game three, 25-18.

Statistically, Osterrieder recorded nine kills and three blocks while Hoburg posted five kills and one block.  Rector chipped in with eight kills while Overbaugh added seven.  Defensively, Schmidt had five perfect passes and two digs, Conley had 21 assists and 3 perfect passes while Leroux posted 3 digs, Nicola 8 assists, and Leroux 3 digs.

It was a good team performance by the Tigers with a number of NA players performing well.  For his efforts throughout the three games, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Russ Hoburg as the Player of the Match.

The win improved the NA section record to 7-0, the overall mark to 10-0.  The Tigers will be back in action again next Tuesday night when they travel to Seneca Valley for a 7:00 pm section match.

WPIAL BOYS' VOLLEYBALL - 2005

The Tigers will compete for the WPIAL Championship, along with 37 other teams in 2005.  The top three teams and ties for third place will enter the team championships set to begin on May 17, 2005.  Ties for first place will not be broken.  Teams tied for first place will be declared co-champions.  Both will receive a plaque and both will enter the tournament.  The third playoff entry will be the runnerup to the co-champions.  If two teams tie for the third playoff entry, but one of the teams has lost both head to head section contests, that team will not enter the tournament round.  If multiple teams tie for the third playoff entry, that tie will be broken in the following manner:
