SHALER FALLS IN RAIN-SHORTENED MATCH

The Tigers had more trouble with the elements than the Shaler Titans at Shaler on Thursday afternoon but still came away with a rain-shortened 4-0 victory. In singles play, junior Chad Skorupka and senior Mike Cobetto were victorious.  Junior Perry Evangelista made a rare singles appearance and had the lead in his match.  Unfortunately, it just became too wet to finish.

The doubles teams continued to play well as they both won easily.  At #1 doubles, the team of sophomore Ryan Hennessee and senior Pat Miller and the #2 team of senior Adam Johnson and junior Justin Wang won in straight sets.

The Tigers are scheduled to travel to Seneca Valley this afternoon to meet the Raiders in a 3:30 pm section match.  If the rainy weather continues, the match will be played at the Oxford Athletic Center.

COBETTO AND EVANGELISTA TAKE SECTION DOUBLES TITLE; TIGER TEAM BLANKS HAMPTON, 5-0

The Tigers' doubles team of senior Mike Cobetto and junior Perry Evangelista defeated the #2 NA team of junior Payom Dousti and sophomore Ryan Hennessee in the finals of the Section 2 Doubles Tournament at the Senior High courts on Tuesday afternoon.  It was not easy as the top Tiger team won the first game, 6-3, lost the second game 6-1, and came back to edge the #2 team, 7-5, in the third and final game.  Both teams will advance to the WPIAL Doubles Championships next week.

In section action also at the Senior High courts, the Tiger team defeated the Hampton Talbots, 5-0, in section action on Tuesday afternoon.  The Tiger singles players swept the Talbots with junior Zach Skorupka, senior Pat Miller and senior Adam Johnson doing the honors.  The Tiger doubles teams also won in straight sets.  At #1 doubles, the sophomore team of Shawn Palmeri and Matt Dulac and the #2 junior team of Justin Wang and Ankit Dhir were too much for the Talbots.  With the win, the Tigers improved their section record to 7-0, their overall mark to 11-3.

The Tigers will travel to Shaler this afternoon, weather permitting, to meet the Talbots in another section match.  Match tme is set for 3:30 pm.  If it rains, the match will be moved to the Oxford Athletic Club.

TIGER TEAMS ADVANCE TO SECTION CHAMPIONSHIP

Both Tiger doubles teams were victorious in the early rounds at Lakevue Racquet Club on Monday afternoon to advance to the championship final of the section championships.  After receiving a bye in the first round, the #1 team of senior Mike Cobetto and junior Perry Evangelista defeated Tommy Gacka and Adam Jones in the quarterfinals, 10-3.  The #2 team of junior Payom Dousti and sophomore Ryan Hennessee also received a first-round bye and then knocked off Adam Kowalski and Andrew Direnzo of Butler, 10-3.

In the semifinals, Cobetto and Evangelista took care of Scott Golmic and Jon Hartzell, 6-2, 6-3.  The North Hills team of Steve Herchko and Matt Maguire was defeated by Dousti and Hennessee, 6-2, 6-2.

The championship final is scheduled to be played this afternoon at the Senior High courts, weather permitting.  Match time is scheduled for 2:00 pm.

TIGERS WIN TENTH AGAINST SHADY SIDE

The Tigers dumped the usually powerful Shady Side Academy Indians, 4-1, at the Shady Side Academy courts on Thursday afternoon.  Leading the way were juniors Zach Skorupka and Payom Dousti who won their singles matches.  In doubles competition, both Tiger teams came through.  At #1 doubles, it was the team of senior Perry Evangelista and sophomore Ryan Hennessee.  At #2 doubles, the team of senior Pat Miller and sophomore Shawn Palmeri was also victorious. 

The win improved the NA overall record to 10-3 on the year.  The next competition for the Tiger netters will be the Section Doubles Tournament to be played at the Senior High courts on Monday afternoon.

SKORUPKA FALLS IN WPIAL FINALS THRILLER

It went down to the wire, but Tiger junior Zach Skorupka came up just a little short in the championship final of the WPIAL Class AAA Singles Championship at the Senior High courts on Tuesday afternoon.  In a match that was delayed by over an hour by rain and lightning, freshman Corey Watt of Pine-Richland won the title with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (6-8), 7-5 victory over Skorupka.  

After Watt won the first set in a tiebreaker, Skorupka came back to even the match with a tiebreaker victory of his own.  In the final game, Watt had the early lead at 3-0, but Skorupka came back to go ahead 4-3.  After Watt regained the lead at 5-4, Skorupka rallied again to tie the match at 5-5.  After taking a 6-5 lead, Watt built a 40-0 lead before Skorupka hit into the net to end the match.  Watt had been a student in the North Allegheny School District before moving to Pine-Richland before 8th grade.

Both finalists and third-place winner Sean Curley of Woodland Hills have qualified for the PIAA tournament to be held later.  The Tiger team will be back in action this afternoon when they host Hampton in a section match at the Senior High courts.  Match time is scheduled for 3:00 pm.

SKORUPKA ADVANCES TO FINAL OF WPIAL SINGLES TOURNAMENT

Junior Zach Skorupka won three matches on Monday afternoon at the Senior High courts to advance to the finals of the WPIAL Class AAA Singles Championships.  In the first round, Skorupka easily knocked off Jordon Kurth of Ringgold,10-0 and NA senior Mike Cobetto defeated A.J. McHugh of Hempfield, 10-1, to advance to the quarterfinals.  In the quarters, Skorupka got a scare from Sam DeSimone of Central Catholic.  The Tiger junior needed a tiebreaker to win, coming back from deficits of 4-1 and 10-9 to win 11-10.  Cobetto was defeated by Evan Reese of Upper St. Clair, 10-4.

In the semifinals, Skorupka defeated Sean Curley of Woodland Hills in two sets, 6-4 and 6-3.  Skorupka will meet #1 seed Casey Watt of Pine-Richland in the championship match this afternoon at the Senior High courts.  Match time is scheduled for 2:30 pm.  The MSA Sports Network will broadcast the match live on the internet.

SKORUPKA, COBETTO GO FOR WPIAL SINGLES TITLE BEGINNING TODAY

The WPIAL announced the pairings for the Singles Tournament to be held at the Senior High courts this afternoon beginning at 1:00pm.  In the first round, junior Zach Skorupka will play Matt Yost of Norwin while senior Mike Cobetto will meet A.J. McHugh of Hempfield.  Casey Watt of Pine-Richland is the #1 seed.

TIGERS DROP BUTLER, 4-1, TO TAKE TWO-GAME LEAD IN SECTION

The Tigers traveled to Butler on Friday afternoon and defeated their closest section rival, 4-1, to build a two-game lead over the Tornado.  Juniors Zach Skorupa and Payom Dousti won their singles matches easily, and senior Adam Johnson battled back from a one-set deficit to complete the singles sweep.

In doubles play, the #2 sophomore team of Ryan Hennessee and Shawn Palmeri won the last ten games to stifle Butler's desperate attempt to get back into the match.

With the win, the Tigers improved their section record to 6-0, the overall mark to 9-3 on the season.  Skorupa and senior Mike Cobetto will represent NA in the WPIAL Singles Tournament at the Senior High courts on Monday afternoon.  Action is slated to get under way at 1:00 pm.

TIGERS REBOUND TO CRUSH FOX CHAPEL, 5-0

After dropping a non-section decision to Peters Township on Wednesday, the Tigers easily disposed of the once-powerful Fox Chapel Foxes, 5-0, at the Senior High courts on Thursday afternoon.  Junior Zach Skorupka, senior Mike Cobetto, and sophomore Ryan Hennessee led the way with outstanding performances in the singles competition.

In doubles play, the Tigers dominated play.  At #1 doubles, the team of senior Perry Evangelista and Payom Dousti won easily as did the number two team of senior Pat Miller and sophomore Shawn Palmeri.

The Tigers will travel to rival Butler this afternoon to meet the Tornado in a section contest.  Match time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

PETERS TOWNSHIP ENDS TIGER STREAK, 4-1

The Tigers traveled to Peters Township on Wednesday afternoon for a non-section match and saw the Indians end the six-game unbeaten streak with a 4-1 victory.  Playing without some top players, the only bright spot for NA was the play of junior Zach Skorupka who knocked of the Indians' #1 player for the Tigers' only win.

The Tigers will host Fox Chapel this afternoon at the Senior High courts in a non-section match.  Scheduled starting time is set for 3:00 pm.  Tomorrow, NA gets back to section play when they travel to Butler for a 3:30 pm match.

SKORUPKA EDGES COBETTO IN SECTION FINAL

In the championship final of the Section 2 singles tournament, junior Zach Skorupka edged senior teammate Mike Cobetto in three sets to win the title.  In the first set, Skorupka was a 6-3 winner.  In the second set, Cobetto came back to win the tie breaker, 7-2, and even the match.  In the final set, Skorupka controlled play in a 6-1 victory.  Both players have qualified for the WPIAL championships that will be held next Monday and Tuesday.

The Tiger team will be back in action today when they travel to Peters Township for a non-section match.  Starting time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

SKORUPKA, COBETTO ADVANCE TO FINALS IN SECTION SINGLES

Tiger junior Zach Skorupka and senior Mike Cobetto both won two matches in the preliminary rounds of the Section 2 section singles tournament at the Senior High courts on Monday afternoon to advance to the final.  

In the quarterfinals, Skorupka knocked off Matt Maguire of North Hills, 10-1 while Cobetto defeated Zac Parkhill of Hampton, 10-0.  In the semifinals, Skorupka took care of Ike Backstrom of Butler, 6-1, 6-0, with Cobetto downing Steve Herchko of North Hills, 6-1, 6-2.

The all-NA championship final will be held today at the Senior High courts with action scheduled to get under way at 2:15 pm.

TIGERS KNOCK OFF NORTH HILLS, 5-0

The Tigers defeated rival North Hills, 5-0, at North Hills on Friday afternoon for their sixth consecutive victory.  All three singles players were successful --- junior Zach Skorupka at #1, senior Mike Cobetto at #2, and junior Payom Dousti at #3.

The doubles teams had little trouble with the Indians.  At #1 doubles, senior Perry Evangelista and sophomore Ryan Hennessee won easily as did the #2 team of senior Pat Miller and sophomore Shawn Palmeri.

With the win, the Tigers completed the first half of section play undefeated with a 5-0 record while their overall mark improved to 7-2.  On Monday afternoon, Zach Skorupka and senior Mike Cobetto will represent NA in the section singles tournament.  Action will get under way on the Senior High courts beginning at 2:00 pm.  The Tiger team will resume play on Wednesday when they travel to Peters Township for a 3:30 pm non-section match.

TIGERS DUMP MT. LEBANON, 4-1, FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT VICTORY

The Tigers knocked off perennial powerhouse Mt. Lebanon, 4-1, at the Senior High courts in a non-section match on Thursday afternoon.  The Tigers got big victories at #1 singles from junior Zach Skorupka, and at #2 singles from senior Mike Cobetto to pace NA to the win.

In doubles play, both teams were victorious. The #1 doubles team of senior Perry Evangelista and sophomore Ryan Hennessee along with senior Pat Miller and sophomore Shawn Palmeri at #2 were too tough for the Blue Devils.

The Tigers will travel to North Hills this afternoon to meet the Indians in a section match.  Starting time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

SHALER NO MATCH FOR NA IN 5-0 ROUT

The Tigers lost only two games of the 62 played on their way to a 5-0 victory over Shaler on the Senior High courts on Wednesday afternoon.  In singles play, junior Zach Skorupka at #1, senior Mike Cobetto at #2, and senior Adam Johnson at #3, had little trouble as they cruised to easy wins.

In doubles play, the #1 team of senior Perry Evangelista and sophomore Ryan Hennessee and the #2 sophomore team of Shawn Palmeri and Matt Dulac made short work of the Titans.  With the win, the NA section record improved to 4-0, the overall mark to 5-2.  The Tigers will host perennial powerhouse Mt. Lebanon this afternoon at the Senior High courts.  Match time is 3:30 pm.

TIGERS TAKE SECTION LEAD WITH 4-1 VICTORY OVER SENECA VALLEY

Coach John Woffington's Tigers defeated Seneca Valley, 4-1, at the Senior High courts on Monday afternoon to take sole possession of first place in Section 2.  Senior Zach Skorupka, sophomore Adam Hennessee, and senior Adam Johnson all won their singles matches to pace NA to the victory.  In doubles play, the senior team of Perry Evangelista and Pat Miller were tested at #1 doubles but came away with the victory.

The win improved the NA section record to 3-0, the overall mark to 4-2 on the season.  The Tigers will host perennial powerhouse Mt. Lebanon this afternoon at the Senior High courts.  Match time is scheduled for 3:00 pm.

HAMPTON FALLS TO TIGERS, 3-2

Coach John Woffington's Tigers traveled to Hampton on Friday afternoon and came home with a 3-2 victory.  Despite playing without all the top players, NA was able to control the Talbots and win the match.  Senior Mike Cobetto took the #1 singles match to set the stage for the victory.  

Both doubles teams came through for the Tigers.  Senior Perry Evangelista and sophomore Ryan Hennessee won at #1 doubles with the team of senior Pat Miller and sophomore Shawn Palmeri capturing the win at #2 doubles.  Coach Woffington praised the "take no prisoners" attitude of his doubles' teams as they won the decisive matches.

The win improved the NA section record to 2-0, the overall mark to 3-2 on the season.  The Tigers will host Seneca Valley on Monday afternoon in an important section match.  The starting time is set for 3:00 pm at the Senior High courts.

JV UPDATE:  The JV team defeated Hampton, 5-0, to improve their record to 4-1.

TIGERS BLANK BUTLER, 5-0, IN SECTION OPENER

The Tigers opened the season in section play with a 5-0 shutout over Butler at the Senior High courts on Wednesday afternoon.  NA swept the singles play in straight sets with senior Mike Cobetto, junior Payom Dousti and sophomore Ryan Hennessee dominating their opponents.

In doubles action, the senior team of Zach Skorupka and Perry Evangelista and the team of senior Pat Miller and sophomore Shawn Palmeri were victorious to complete the sweep for the Tigers.  

The Tigers will continue section play tomorrow when they travel to Hampton for a 3:30 pm section match.

PINE-RICHLAND DOWNS TIGERS, 3-2

In the final non-section match before section play, a strong Pine-Richland team won a 3-2 decision over the Tigers at the Senior High courts on Tuesday afternoon.  Senior Mike Cobetto won at #2 singles and the doubles team of senior Perry Evangelista and junior Payom Dousti came back from a set down to win their match.

The loss dropped the NA non-section record to 1-2 on the season as the get ready for section play.  The Tigers will host Butler this afternoon at the Senior High courts in the section opener.  Match time is scheduled for 3:00 pm.

TIGERS SPLIT OPENING TWO NON-SECTION MATCHES

Playing without two starters, the Tigers dropped a 3-2 decision to Woodland Hills on Monday afternoon at the Senior High courts.  The Tigers traveled to Franklin Regional on Monday afternoon and came home with a 4-1 victory in the season opener.  NA was the WPIAL runnerup last season and finished with an overall record of 18-2.

The match scheduled at Mt. Lebanon for Wednesday afternoon has been cancelled due to inclement weather.  The Tigers get back in action next Tuesday when they host Pine-Richland on Tuesday in a non-section match.  On Wednesday, Butler will visit NA for the season opener.  Both matches will be played at the Senior High courts with a starting time of 3:00 pm.
