NORTH ALLEGHENY VARSITY WRESTLING MATCH SUMMARIES SNOWSTORM KNOCKS TIGERS OUT OF COUNTY TOURNAMENT Saturday's snowstorm prevented the Tigers from returning to the finals of the Allegheny County Tournament at Fox Chapel. In spite of not participating on Saturday, the Tigers still had five wrestlers reach the semifinals on Friday and overall had seven wrestlers place in the top eight. Athletic Director Bob Bozzuto said, "It was a tough decision, but it's better to be safe than sorry. We didn't want to put the kids or parents in harm's way." On an interesting side note, ALL boys' and girls' basketball games scheduled for Saturday were postponed! ALLEGHENY COUNTY

RESULTS - Friday
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS HANDLE HAMPTON, 42-31, ON SENIOR NIGHT To listen to a replay of the match, click here! It was Senior Night at the Senior High gym on Wednesday night, and the seniors came through to lead the Tigers over Hampton, 42-31. Seniors Rob Cawley and Derick Schmidt both pinned their opponents to lead the Tigers to their eighth straight section victory without a loss. The Tigers also got pins from juniors Rory Dahl and Joel Nellis and freshman Karl DeCiantis along with a technical fall by sophomore Rob Waltko. The match started with the 145 lb. weight class where Brandy Krebs defeated Bill Landefeld, 11-5, to give Hampton its only lead of the match at 3-0. At 152, DeCiantis needed only 1:17 to pin Matt Brode as the Tigers took the lead for good at 6-3. Waltko followed with a 19-4 technical fall over Scott Kelly at 160. Schmidt pinned Pat Annis at 171 and Nellis followed by pinning Alex Fuller at 189 as the Tigers built the lead to 23-3. At 215, Dahl continued the NA streak by pinning Ben Schulman at 2:45 to increase the Tiger margin to 29-3. At 275, the Tigers forfeited the match due to an injury. Sophomore Steve Sabreen came back at 103 to win a major decision over Jack Hodil, 9-0, to increase the NA lead to 33-9. After Damon Clark won a major at 112, sophomore Ryan Troiano made a first period takedown the difference as he defeated Steve Van Atta, 2-0, as the Tiger lead went to 36-13. At 125, Cawley pinned Nick Matthews at 3:04 to put the match out of reach as the Tigers led, 42-13, with just three matches left. Hampton picked up pins in each of the final three bouts to make the final score a little more respectable as NA won, 42-31. It was a good night for the Tigers as the continued toward the section title. For his efforts on Senior Night, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Rob Cawley as the Outstanding Wrestler of the match. NA will be back in action again on Friday and Saturday when they travel to Fox Chapel for the Allegheny County Tournament. Action gets under way at 10:00 am on Friday. MATCH SUMMARY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS HOLD OFF PINE-RICHLAND, 38-24 A pin by senior Derick Schmidt at 160 put the Tigers in the lead for good as NA defeated the Pine-Richland Rams, 38-24, at Pine-Richland on Saturday afternoon. NA got pins from senior Rob Cawley at 125 and sophomore Bill Landefeld at 140 along with a technical fall by sophomore Rob Waltko at 171 as the Tigers won the battle for first place in Section 3. The match started with the 215 pound weight class and junior Rory Dahl got the Tigers off to a good start with a 3-0 decision over Mike Morgan. Senior R.J. Parks followed with a 14-9 win at heavyweight to make it 6-0. At 103, sophomore Steve Sabreen won a 3-0 decision over Sam Brehm to push the Tiger lead to 9-0. Pine-Richland picked up a forfeit victory at 112, and Ryan McGarity followed with a pin at 119 as the Rams took a 12-9 lead. Cawley followed at 125 by pinning Aaron Formanek at 5:18 to put NA back on top, 15-12. After Mike Fiore won a decision for the Rams at 130 to tie the match, Zach Brehm won an 8-3 decision at 135 to put Pine-Richland back ahead, 18-15. Landefeld came back with a pin of John McDonald at 140 as the Tigers moved back ahead, 21-18. Tim Newman gave P-R the final lead of the match with a pin at 145. With the Tigers trailing, 24-21, the Tigers won the final four matches to win going away. At 152, freshman Karl DeCiantis took a 9-7 decision from Ryan Schleiden. At 160, Schmidt pinned Brandon Halaja at 3:49 to put NA ahead, 30-24. Waltko defeated Jeff Gonano, 17-2, to pick up a technical fall to push the lead to 35-24. Junior Joel Nellis finished the match with a 7-2 victory at 189 as the Tigers went on to a 38-24 victory. The victory gave the Tigers a record of 6-0 in section, 14-1 overall. NA holds a one-game lead over Pine-Richland in the section standings. The Tigers will be home on Wednesday night to face the Hampton Talbots in a section match. The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the match LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-match show at 6:50 pm. Match time has been changed to 7:00 pm. MATCH SUMMARY
* - indicates starting weight for match * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS STOP SENECA VALLEY, 46-20 The Tigers defeated Seneca Valley, 46-20, at Seneca on Wednesday night. Four Tiger pins and two forfeits helped NA to the easy victory. The Tigers won nine matches on their way to their fifth section victory against no losses. At 103, freshman Jason Turner pinned Nick Minton at 1:10, at 112, sophomore Steve Sabreen pinned Tyler Baldauf at 1:11, while at 119, sophomore Ryan Troiano needed only 24 seconds to finish off Steve Millett. The other Tiger fall came in the heavyweight class where senior R.J. Parks pinned Ian Whittaker at the 34 second mark. Freshman Karl DeCiantis won by major decision at 152 where he defeated Zach Cahall, 12-4. At 130, senior Justin Wang decisioned Frank Snyder, 3-2, in two overtimes while at 145, sophomore Bill Landefeld took a 12-5 decision over Dave Kovach. The two NA forfeits came at 160 and 171 where sophomore Rob Waltko and junior Joel Nellis picked up the victories. The win improved the NA overall record to 13-1 on the season. The Tigers are tied with Pine-Richland for first place in the section and the two teams meet on Saturday afternoon at Pine-Richland. Match time has been changed from 7:00 pm to 1:00 pm. MATCH SUMMARY
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * BURRELL ENDS NA UNBEATEN STREAK, 33-27 The Burrell Bucs defeated the Tigers, 33-27, at the Senior High gym on Saturday afternoon to hand NA its first loss of the season. The Tigers had gained a 27-18 lead in the match before Burrell came back for the victory. Freshman Karl DeCiantis won a major decision at 152, sophomore Rob Waltko followed with a major decision at 160, and senior Derick Schmidt made it three in a row with a major at 171. Burrell jumped out to a big lead early as they registered pins at 135, 140, and 145, to start with an 18-0 advantage. Beginning at 152, the DeCiantis defeated Jason Makara, 10-2, Waltko downed Derek Maloney, 11-3, and Schmidt won over Clayton Homa, 11-1, and the Tigers were back in the match at 18-12. A forfeit win by junior Joel Nellis at 189 tied the match at 18-18. At 215, junior Rory Dahl put the Tigers ahead, 21-18, with a 6-2 decision over Joe Serluco, and at 275, senior R.J. Parks decision Chris Taveetia, 3-1, to push the lead to 24-18. Sophomore Steve Sabreen followed with a 5-4 decision over Jordan Shields to give NA its biggest lead at 27-18. Burrell then won the remaining four matches to pull out the victory. After a forfeit win at 112, Shane Welsh won at 119, Devon Maloney at 125, and Zach Pisano at 130. The Tigers had won twelve straight before falling to Burrell in the non-section match. The NA record fell to 12-1 on the season after the loss. It will be a big week for the Tiger wrestlers. On Wednesday night, NA will travel to Seneca Valley to meet the Raiders in a section match. The starting time is scheduled for 7:00 pm. On Saturday afternoon, the Tigers will go to Pine-Richland to face the Rams in a battle for first place. Match time has been moved from 7:00 pm to 1:00 pm. MATCH SUMMARY

The Tigers built a 28-9 lead and held off the Butler Golden Tornado at the Senior High gym on Wednesday night on their way to a 34-20 victory. Senior Derick Schmidt had the only pin of the night for NA at 171 with junior Rory Dahl recording a major decision at 215. The match started at the 135 pound weight class where Stew Rapone gave Butler a 3-0 lead with an 8-2 victory over sophomore Jeff Wolf. At 140, Tom Hollerman pinned Ryan McCullough to put Butler ahead, 9-0. Sophomore Bill Landefeld came back to shut out Dave Coburn, 4-0, at 145, to cut the lead to 9-3. At 152, freshman Karl DeCiantis won a hard-fought 8-4 decision over Josh Coburn to make it 9-6. Sophomore Rob Waltko won by forfeit at 160 to give the Tigers a lead they never relinquished. Schmidt came through to pin Pascazi at the 1:58 mark to push the NA lead to 18-9. Junior Joel Nellis was consistent in an 8-2 victory over Ryan Eck, and Dahl followed with his 8-0 victory over Kalin as the Tigers extended the lead to 25-9. In the heavyweight class, senior R.J. Parks used his speed and skill to outmaneuver the larger Marcus Hough in a 6-3 victory as the Tigers built a commanding 28-9 lead. As the match moved back to the lower weights at 103, freshman Rob Runyan brought Butler back with a 10-2 major decision over Jason Turner. With the score now 28-13, sophomore Steve Sabreen won a 6-1 decision over Ken Rosenbauer to give NA a 31-13 advantage. At 119, Decker Hubbs decisioned Ryan Troiano 7-5 in a see saw match. At 125, Rob Cawley took on freshman Ian McLaughlin in the most interesting match of the evening. With Cawley going for a pin in the first period, McLaughlin asked out of the hold. Cawley was given three near fall points plus one additional point. An ensuing discussion saw both coaches in disagreement with the referee's decision. After a conference lasting for several minutes, Cawley was given a 6-4 lead after one period. McLaughlin came back strong in the second period but Cawley still held a 7-6 lead after two. In the final period, the Tiger senior took control on his way to a 12-6 win. Butler's John Sanro defeated Justin Wang, 11-2, to make it a little closer but the Tigers were able to win by a 34-20 score. It was a tough match for the Tigers but the NA higher weights dominated Butler to earn the victory. For his efforts and the quickest pin of the match, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Derick Schmidt as the Outstanding Wrestler of the match. The victory kept the Tigers undefeated with a 4-0 section record and a 12-0 overall mark. NA will host Burrell on Saturday afternoon in a non-section match. The starting time is set for 2:00 pm. * - indicates starting weight for match * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WALTKO, PARKS ELIMINATED IN QUARTERFINALS AT POWERADE Two Tiger wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals of the Powerade Tournament at Canon-McMillan High School on Wednesday where they were defeated. At 160, sophomore Rob Waltko pinned Adam Knepper of Connellsville at 3:12 and then pinned Cody Miller of West Greene at 5:32 to advance. In the quarterfinals, Waltko had to leave because of injury giving the victory to Chris Decker of State College. In the heavyweight class, R.J. Parks decisioned Brandon Barnes of Red Lion, 2-1, and Frank Becker of Moeller, 5-3, before being pinned by Sha'n Wilson of Colonial Forge at 1:03 of the first period. Five other NA wrestlers won their first round matches before losing in the second round. At 103, sophomore Steve Sabreen pinned Kilian Hiner of Ft. Lebouef at 49 seconds while senior Rob Cawley at 125 pinned Cory Tharp of West Greene at 3:34 to advance. At 145, sophomore Bill Landefeld pinned Tom Stumpf of State College at 5:07 while at 189 junior Rory Dahl won by fall over Matt Hough of Mt. Pleasant at 1:14 of the first. Junior Joel Nellis decisioned Devin Thyberg of Pennridge, 7-6, to advance. All five NA were defeated in the second round and dropped into the consolation bracket. In consolation action, Dahl pinned Alex Fuller of Hampton at 1:35 and decisioned Ben Maund of Canon-MacMillan, 4-3, to stay alive. At 103, Sabreen major decisioned Chris Albright of Red Lion, 10-1, before losing a tough 6-5 decision to Zac Zakubec of Walsh Jesuit. At 125, Cawley decisioned Brad Zitney of Albert Gallatin, 6-5, before losing a 5-2 match to Cory Leslie of Keystone Oaks. At 130, senior Justin Wang major decisioned Erik Weisband of Fox Chapel, 11-3, before losing by fall to Dan Svec of Greensburg Salem. At 145, Landefeld pinned Travis King of Commodore Perry at 3:43 before losing a 6-3 decision to Anthony Reck of Colonial Forge. At 171, Nellis decision Adam Levine of Solon, 6-1, before losing by fall to Jeremiah Landis of Fort Lebouef. Parks is still alive at 275. In second-day action, Waltko came back to finish in 4th place. The Tiger sophomore defeated Robin McCabe from Freedom, 3-1, before major decisioning Nate Metz of Moeller, 12-4. Next, Waltko shut out Patrick Hutchinson from Greensburg Salem, 5-0, before falling to Chris Decker of State College in the battle for third place. At 189, Dahl decisioned Dustin Combs of Parkland, 2-0, before falling to Phil Henderson of Chartiers-Houston because of injury. Dahl finished in 8th place in the 189 pound weight class. The Tigers finished in 25th place with 56.5 points. Mt. St. Joseph's of Maryland won the tournament with 167.5 points. 38th ANNUAL POWERADE

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS DOMINATE AMBRIDGE, 53-21 To listen to a replay of the match, click here! The Tigers used pins by seniors Rob Cawley and Derick Schmidt and sophomore Jeff Wolf, along with four forfeits, to easily defeat Ambridge, 53-21, at the Senior High gym on Wednesday night. In the top match of the night, sophomore Rob Waltko major decisioned T.J. Pringle of the Bridgers, 9-1, at 160. Sophomore Bill Landefeld also recorded a major decision at 145 with a 15-2 victory over A.J. Vukovic. The Tigers were given forfeits in the first three matches when the Ambridge wrestlers could not wrestle because of illness. With the score at 18-0, it took Cawley only 52 seconds to pin Ryan Wilson at 125 to increase the margin to 24-0. Bryon Gleason scored the first points for Ambridge at 130 when he picked up a pin, but Wolf answered at 135. Trailing 4-1 going into the last period, the Tiger sophomore pinned Frank Presto 42 seconds into the period to give NA a commanding 30-6 advantage. At 140, Ed Albrecht earned a pin for the Bridgers, but Landefeld came back with a major decision at 145 when he defeated A.J. Vukovic, 15-2. After freshman Karl DeCiantis was given a forfeit at 152, it was a battle of top five ranked wrestlers at 160. Waltko dominated Pringle from the outset, leading 2-0 after one period and 5-0 after two on his way to a 9-1 major decision. At 171, Schmidt pinned Paul Suchy at 2:24 as the Tiger lead went to 50-12. After junior Joel Nellis won a hard-fought 5-4 decision over Kevin Rosinsky, Ambridge came back to win the final two matches. By that time, the Tigers had built an insurmountable lead as they went on to win, 53-21. It was an impressive victory for the Tigers in spite of being handed four forfeits. For his efforts against a talented wrestler, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Rob Waltko as the Outstanding Wrestler of the Match. The win improved the NA section record to 3-0, the overall mark to 11-0. NA will be in the Powerade Tournament next week beginning on Tuesday at Canon-McMillan High School. Matches will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The Tigers will be back in action in section competition again on Wednesday, January 6, when they host Butler. MATCH SUMMARY

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS WIN TWO TO OPEN SECTION COMPETITION The Tigers defeated North Hills, 48-21, and Avonworth, 52-20, in a tri-match at Avonworth on Wednesday evening. In the North Hills match, the Tigers got pins from sophomore Jeff Wolf at 135, freshman Karl DeCiantis at 152, sophomore Rob Waltko at 160, and junior Joel Nellis at 171 along with two forfeits as NA led from start to finish. Six forfeits helped NA to defeat Avonworth. Once again, Waltko picked up a pin a 160 and Nellis at 171. Senior Rob Cawley won a major decision at 125. Both matches started at 112, and sophomore Steve Sabreen won by forfeit to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead against North Hills after the first match. Sophomore Ryan Troiano decisioned Bobby DiCaprio at 119 to increase the margin to 9-0. At 125, Cawley defeated highly-ranked Alex Martinez, 2-0, to push the lead to 12-0. After North Hills picked up six points on a forfeit at 130, Wolf pinned Jerrell Kates at 135 to increase the NA lead to 18-6. After a loss at 140, sophomore Bill Landefeld decisioned Harold, 6-5, at 145, as the lead went to 21-6. Pins by DeCiantis and Waltko gave NA a commanding 33-9 advantage before Pat Wilson recorded a pin at 171. A pin by Nellis and a forfeit win by junior Rory Dahl at 215 put the score at 45-15. A North Hills forfeit win at 275 preceded a victory by freshman Jason Turner at 103 as the Tigers earned a 48-21 victory over their neighborhood rivals. In the match against Avonworth, the Antelopes hung in there but the six forfeits were too much to overcome. After Sabreen was given his second forfeit win of the night, Dustin Cutenese won by decision at 119 for Avonworth to cut the NA lead to 6-3. Cawley major decisioned Dan Puciata, 8-0, at 125 but Avonworth picked up a forfeit at 130 as the match stayed close at 10-9. Mark Roney put the Antelopes in the lead with a major decision at 135. A forfeit win by Ryan McCullough at 140 put NA back on top at 16-13. Avonworth answered at 145 as Eric Vone posted a major decision as the Antelopes vaulted back on top, 17-16. Curtis Branchen won a decision at 152 to push the Avonworth lead to 20-16. It took just 34 seconds for Waltko to pin Bill Randal and put NA back on top for good, 22-20. Nellis pinned Al Okinski at 189 and NA won by forfeit in the other four remaining matches to win going away, 52-20. The Tigers are now 2-0 in section, 3-0 overall. * - indicates start of match * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGERS EDGE McGUFFEY, 34-32 The Tigers got off on the right foot with a 34-32 victory over the #7 ranked McGuffey Highlanders at McGuffey on Tuesday night. The non-section win was in the first dual match of the season. With the Tigers trailing 32-28 going into the last match, senior Rob Cawley pinned Jeremiah Hadrych to give the Tigers the come from behind victory. NA got pins from sophomore Rob Waltko at 160, senior Derick Schmidt at 171 and junior Rory Dahl at 275 on their way to the victory. With the match starting at 130, Caleb Little major decisioned Justin Wang, 10-1, to give McGuffey an early 4-0 lead. Sophomore Jeff Wolf earned a major 14-4 decision over Tyler Milliken to tie the score at 4-4. The Highlanders won the next two matches to build a 14-4 advantage. NA came back to cut the lead to 14-13 behind Karl DeCiantis who won a decision at 152 and Waltko who pinned Mike Piszczor in just 1:08 at 160. Schmidt put the Tigers ahead, 19-14, by pinning Ben Dunaway at 171. McGuffey came back to regain the lead with a forfeit at 189 and a decision at 215. Dahl regained the lead for the Tigers, 25-23, with a pin of Zach Powers at 275. The Highlanders then won matches at 103 and 112 to take a 32-25 lead with just two matches remaining. At 119, sophomore Ryan Troiano earned a tough 4-3 decision over Josh Daniels to cut the lead to 32-28. Cawley came through with the pin at 125 to win the match. Karl DeCiantis was third at 152 and junior Rory Dahl fourth at 215 as the Tigers competed in the first tournament of the season. NA will travel to #7 ranked McGuffey tomorrow night in their first dual match of the season. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
