NORTH ALLEGHENY VARSITY SWIMMING AND DIVING * GIRLS: SECTION CHAMPIONS * * BOYS: SECTION CHAMPIONS * File Photos by Andrew Keelan GIRLS' 200 FREESTYLE RELAY FINISHES FIFTH The 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Jamie Chakany, junior Kathy Faingold and seniors Tara Thompson and Kim Jenkins gave NA its top finish at the PIAA Championships at Bucknell University in two days of competition. In additional girls' competition on day one, Jenkins was eleventh in the 200 freestyle with Thompson coming in sixteenth. In the 200 individual medley, Faingold posted a 10th place finish while in the 100 butterfly, senior Katie Belardi came in fourteenth. In boys' events, the NA 200 medley relay team qualified but was disqualified in the final. On Saturday, a number of NA swimmers qualified for the finals. Faingold came in fourteenth in the 100 breaststroke, Thompson was fifteenth in the 500 freestyle, and junior Kevin Gasperich finished sixteenth also in the 500 free. Both 400 free relay teams qualified for the finals. The girls' team of Jenkins, Chakany, Belardi and Faingold posted a 13th place while the boys' team of sophomores Rob Meyers, Brandon Smith, Matt Scherer and Gasperich was twelfth. In the boys' diving competition, junior Matt Kuhn qualified for the finals and finished in 16th position. The Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN) will televise the swimming and diving events on a delayed basis on Sunday, March 27. The swimming events will begin at 2:00 pm while the diving finals will be shown beginning at 10:00 pm. Listed below are the Tiger qualifiers for the PIAA meet. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER BOYS, GIRLS CAPTURE THIRD PLACE AT THE WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS Both the boys and girls' teams finished in third place at the WPIAL Championships at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh on Friday afternoon. In the boys' competition, it came down to the 400 freestyle relay where Mt. Lebanon edged NA to take the title. With the silver medal, the Tiger relay team qualified for the PIAA Championships next week at Bucknell University. Senior Pat Kirsch took third in the 100 backstroke to earn a trip to the state finals. Sophomore Brandon Smith was fourth. Junior Andrew Shepard came in fifth in the 500 freestyle. For the Lady Tigers, senior Kim Jenkins added a silver in the 500 freestyle to go with her gold in the 200 free. Senior Tara Thompson was third. Both NA swimmers qualified for the PIAA Championships. The Lady Tigers 400 free relay team came in second to also qualify for states. Freshman Jamie Chakany finished 4th in the 100 freestyle. FIRST DAY SUMMARY After the first day of competition at the WPIAL Championships at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh, the Lady Tigers were in second place behind Bethel Park while the boys' team was in fourth place. Senior Kim Jenkins won the 200 freestyle and junior Kathy Faingold captured third place in the 200 individual medley. Senior Katie Belardi was fourth in the 100 butterfly while sophomore Brandon Smith took fourth in the 200 individual medley. The girls' 200 freestyle relay came in fourth and the boys' 200 medley relay was fifth. The top three places advance to the PIAA finals next week at Bucknell University. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * KUHN CAPTURES FIFTH PLACE IN WPIAL DIVING FINALS Junior Matt Kuhn finished in fifth place in the WPIAL Class AAA Diving Championships at Pine-Richland High School on Saturday. By capturing the fifth spot in the standings, Kuhn qualified for the PIAA Championships at Bucknell University on Friday, March 18th. Senior Matt Verlinich finished 15th and junior Steve Domville 21st in the overall standings. In girls' competition, freshman Olivia DeFazio qualified for the final round and was 11th in the final standings. Senior Alex DeFazio finished in 24th place and junior Claire Mackay was 30th in the Class AAA final standings. WPIAL CLASS AAA DIVING

* - qualified for PIAA championships * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER TEAMS DUNK SENECA VALLEY TO TAKE SECTION TITLES Both the girls' and boys' teams defeated Seneca Valley at Seneca on Thursday night to wrap up the Section 2 championships. The Lady Tigers downed the Raiders, 98-88, to win their third consecutive title and the 24th in the last 26 years. The Tiger boys' team crushed Seneca, 110-63, for their 15th consecutive section crown. With the victories, both teams finished up with section records of 5-0. The boys completed an undefeated regular season with a record of 9-0 while the Lady Tigers completed an 8-1 campaign. Note: Meet results were NOT forwarded to the North Allegheny Sports Network. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER TEAMS TAKE TWO FROM PINE-RICHLAND The Tiger teams traveled to Pine-Richland on Tuesday night for a non-section meet with the Rams. The Tiger boys downed the Rams, 105-65, while the Lady Tigers were victorious, 98-79. In the girls' meet, the Lady Tigers won 10 of 11 swimming events, sweeping the 100 fly, 100 free and 500 freestyle. Senior Katie Belardi and junior Kathy Faingold were the top individual swimmers for NA. Belardi won the 500 free and swam on two winning relays while Faingold took the 200 free and also was part of two winning relay teams. Senior Tara Thompson won the 100 fly and was part of the winning medley relay, senior Kim Jenkins captured the 50 free and swam on the 400 relay, junior Lindsay Chapon was first in the 100 free and also was part of the medley relay, and freshman Jamie Chakany won the 200 individual medley and also swam on the winning 400 relay. Junior Elaine Healy was first in the 100 breaststroke, and sophomore Ashley Ferraro won the 100 backstroke. Second-place points were won by senior Megan Hritz in the 100 free, junior Erica Harpur in both the 100 fly and 100 back, junior Emilie Homa in the 500 free, and Vanessa Carik in the 200 IM. Capturing third place finishes were senior Laura Powell in the 100 fly, sophomore Christine Mulkern in both the 200 and 500 free, freshman Jessica Shearer in both the 50 and 100 free, and Vanessa Carik in the 100 breaststroke. The boys' team won all eleven swimming events with sweeps in the 50 free, the 200 free relay, and the 100 backstroke. Sophomore Rob Meyers won the 100 fly and swam on all three winning relays, freshman Jack Crellin was first in the 100 free, 3rd in the 100 back, and swam on the 200 relay team, junior Peter Cai took the 200 IM and swam on the medley relay, while sophomore Brandon Smith captured the 200 free and swam on the 400 freestyle relay team. Junior Craig Bentzen took a first in the 100 back and a third in the 50 free. Junior Andrew Shepard earned first-place points in the 500 free, sophomore Brendan Kirsch won the 100 back, and freshman Nate Kurtanich took the 50 free. Senior Jeff Glick was busy with a second place in the 200 free and the 200 IM and also helping the medley relay team to victory, while junior Pat Kirsch was second in the 500 free and swam on both the medley and 200 free relays. Second place finishes went to junior Steve Hilty in the 50 free, sophomore Connor Battle in the 100 back, and freshman Jordan Lebovitz in the 100 free. Freshman Sam Mickler was second in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 free, and sophomore Scott VanBuskirk was third in the 100 fly along with a place on the winning 200 free relay. Junior Kevin Gasperich and freshman Mark Schenker swam on the 400 free relay team. With the win, the boys improved their overall record to 9-0 on the season while the girls' squad went to 8-1. The Tiger teams will travel to Seneca Valley tomorrow night with the section titles on the line. Meet time is scheduled for 6:00 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER TEAMS DUNK NORTH HILLS TWICE Both the boys' and girls' swimming and diving teams were victorious over archrival North Hills at the Senior High pool on Thursday night. The boys' team downed the Indians, 106-65, while the Lady Tigers won by a 105-73 score. The Lady Tigers won 9 of 12 events, including sweeps in the 200 IM, 100 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Seniors made their last meet with North Hills memorable. Megan Hritz was the individual leader with first place finishes in both the 200 IM and 100 free. Kim Jenkins won the 200 free and swam on the winning 200 free relay, Katie Belardi took the 100 fly and was part of the winning 200 free relay, and Tara Thompson captured the 500 free and was also a part of the winning 200 free team. Senior Alex DeFazio did her part for the seniors by winning the diving competition. Junior Kathy Faingold swam on both the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay that took first. Freshman Jamie Chakany won the 50 free while juniors Emilie Homa and Erica Harpur, along with sophomore Christine Mulkern, were part of the winning 200 medley relay. Senior Laura Powell had seconds in both the 200 free and 500 free while freshman Cait Cready was second in the 200 free and third in the 50 free. Junior Lindsay Chapon contributed a second in the 200 IM with junior Elaine Healy third. Freshman also did their part with Andrea Chavlovich taking second in the 100 fly, Jessica Shearer third in the 100 free, and Vanessa Carik third in the 500 freestyle. The boys' team won six of twelve events but took numerous seconds and thirds on their way to the easy victory. Senior Jeff Glick won the 100 fly and helped both the 200 medley and 200 free relays to wins. Senior Rob Semanchik was busy with a second in the 50 free, a third in the 100 free and a place on both winning relays. Sophomore Matt Scherer captured the 200 free along with swimming on the winning 200 free relay team. The win kept the boys' team undefeated with a record of 8-0, 4-0 in section while the girls' squad improved to 7-1, 4-0 in section. The Tiger teams will be back in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Pine-Richland for a 6:00 pm meet. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER TEAMS TROUNCE BUTLER Both swimming and diving teams had little trouble in defeating Butler on Wednesday night at the Butler pool. The boys' squad downed the Tornado, 110-60, while the Lady Tigers defeated Butler, 118-68. The Lady

Cready led the way with first place finishes in both the 50 and 100
free along with swimming on the victorious 200 free relay team.

Anne Lutz in the 100 backstroke.

The girls' team improved to 3-0 in section, 6-1 on the year. NA will host North Hills on Thursday with meet time scheduled for 6:00 pm. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * TIGER TEAMS TOP FRANKLIN REGIONAL Both the boys' and girls' swimming and diving teams were victorious over Franklin Regional at the Senior High pool on Tuesday night. The boys' team defeated the Panthers, 112-74, while the Lady Tigers won by a 119-67 score. The boys' team won eight events and swept both the 500 free and 100 breaststroke. Junior Kevin Gasperich led the way for the Tigers with first place finishes in both the 200 free and the 200 individual medley. Junior Pat Kirsch won the 100 back and helped the medley relay to victory, senior Rob Semanchik was third in both the 50 free and the 100 fly, while sophomore Matt Scherer was third in the 200 free and swam for the winning medley relay team. Sophomore Rob Meyers won the 50 free while classmate Brandon Smith took the 100 breaststroke. Two freshmen won races --- Nate Kurtanich in the 100 fly and Jack Crellin in the 500 free. Both Tiger teams will be in action again next Thursday when they travel to Butler for a 6:00 pm section meet. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * WPIAL BOYS/GIRLS SWIMMING - 2004-05 The Tiger teams will compete in Class AAA once again with the boys competing against 28 teams and the girls against 29 teams. The WPIAL individual diving championships will be held on Saturday, February 26, 2005. The swimming championship events will be held the week of February 28, 2005, at the University of Pittsburgh Trees Pool. The dates will be announced later. The PIAA State Championships will be at Bucknell University on March 16 and 17. Section champions will be determined by the best won/lost record in section play. In the case of a tie, head to head results will be the tiebreaker. National Federation scoring system will be in effect. That system scores 6-4-3-2-1 while relay scoring will be 8-4-2 in a six land pool. WPIAL QUALIFYING STANDARDS A. Teams must have a minimum of 11 competitons (swimming and/or diving) prior to the WPIAL meet to be be eligible to score team points at the WPIAL or PIAA Championships. B. Individuals must have been in uniform and available at 75% of the team contests to be eligible for post-season competition. C. Swimming - in order to qualify for the WPIAL championship event at Pitt, all swimmers must achieve the minimum standards established by the WPIAL. These standards must have been met in a WPIAL meet or in an invitational qualifying meet that is scored and uses an electronic timing device. Standards are available on the WPIAL website. D. Diving - order to qualify for the WPIAL diving competiton, all divers must meet the minimum standards that appear on the WPIAL website. BOYS' SWIMMING ALIGNMENT CLASS AAA - 29 TEAMS
