BETHEL PARK COMEBACK ENDS SEASON FOR LADY TIGERS, 48-45

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

After leading for most of the game, the Lady Tigers saw Bethel Park mount a furious last quarter rally to defeat NA, 48-45, at North Hills High School on Friday night in a PIAA first round game.  Junior Rachel Divosevic led the Lady Tigers with 14 points while senior Stephanie Wolf and sophomore Kristen Beatty added 10 each.  Danielle Gratton paced the Blackhawks with 14 points.

Junior Maureen Hester got Bethel Park off to a quick start with a put back just eight seconds into the game.  After Wolf drove to tie the game, Beatty scored from under the basket to give NA a 4-2 lead.  Bethel Park would not have the lead again until late in the fourth quarter.  Divosevic hit a jumper to push the lead to 6-2 before sophomore Samantha Loadman made a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 6-4.  Senior Michelle Yakelis scored from under the hoop to push the lead to 8-5 at the 2:58 mark.  After Hester hit one of two from the stripe, Beatty stole the ball and scored on the layup to push the margin to 10-5.  Senior Sara Sweeney answered with a long three, but NA held a 10-8 lead after the first quarter.

The Lady Tigers continued to play well in the second quarter.  Wolf drove the lane again to score just 12 second into the period.  Sweeney answered with a questionable three to cut the margin to 12-11, but Wolf scored again to make it a 14-11 lead.  After Wolf scored her third basket of the quarter from the right side, Divosevic hit a jumper in the paint to push the margin to 18-11 and force a Bethel Park time out.  Senior Rebecca Mapel dropped in one of two from the line, but Gratton's first hoop of the game cut the lead to 19-13.  Baskets by Beatty and Divosevic gave NA its biggest lead of the game at 23-13 at the 3:18 mark.  Sweeney drained another long trey and Loadman made one of two from the foul line, but the Lady Tigers took a 23-17 advantage to the intermission.

Bethel Park came out strong early in the third quarter and turned three NA turnovers into points as they tied the score at 23-23 just 1:34 into the second half.  The Lady Tigers regrouped, however, with three straight hoops.  Divosevic scored from the base line, Yakelis dropped in a layup, and Divosevic scored again to put NA back ahead by six, 29-23.  Hester and Loadman answered to cut the margin to 29-27 before Divosevic scored her third hoop of the period to make it 31-27 with just 32 seconds remaining.  Neither team scored in the quarter and the Lady Tigers took a 31-27 lead into the final period.

With NA playing a ball control game, neither team scored until Wolf hit a jumper to push the lead to 33-27 at the 6:02 mark.  After Sweeney came back for two, Beatty continued her scoring with a short jumper to push the lead back to six at 35-29.  Sophomore Katie Kendall cut the lead to four, but, once again, NA had the answer as Mapel scored from under the basket.  Gratton's hoop cut the lead to 37-33, but another basket by Beatty and an underhand layup by senior Laura Casey pushed the NA lead to 41-33 with 2:46 left in the game.  Bethel Park brought the ball down court quickly and forced up a long three that missed everything.  Loadman was fouled on the play, however, and made two of three to cut the lead to 41-35.  At this point, Bethel Park turned up the defensive pressure and forced a number of NA turnovers.  Gratton scored two quick hoops after the Blackhawks stole the ball to make it a two-point game at 41-39.  Divosevic answered with a jumper from the foul line, but Loadman came back to make two straight foul shots to cut the lead to 43-41.  On the ensuing play, Bethel stole the ball, Hester drove the lane, scored and was fouled.  Hester made the free throw to give Bethel Park their first lead since the first quarter, 44-43, with just 1:24 remaining.  After the Lady Tigers missed a shot, Sweeney was fouled and made two straight to push the margin to 46-43.  Divosevic came back to score a quick layup with eight seconds left to cut the lead to one.  NA was forced to foul and Gratton dropped in two more from the line.  The Lady Tigers ran out of time as Bethel Park captured a 48-45 decision.

It was a tough loss for the Lady Tigers who led for most of the contest.  Turnovers in the second half made the difference.  Bethel Park scored 15 of their 31 second-half points on turnovers.  In the last two minutes, the Blackhawks turned five NA mistakes into points in the comeback.  Fouls hurt the Lady Tigers as Bethel Park made 13 of 16 while NA was one of two from the stripe.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Kristen Beatty as the Player of the Game.

The loss ended the NA season as they finished with a final mark of 16-11.  The Lady Tigers turned their season around at the midway point and finished with eight wins in the last eleven contests.  Bethel Park improved to 26-3 on the season and will meet section rival Mt. Lebanon in the second round of the PIAA tournament.

LADY TIGERS FALL SHORT IN UPSET BID

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers battled back from a 12-point halftime deficit but Oakland Catholic held on to defeat NA, 38-34, in the quarterfinals of the WPIAL tournament at Chartiers Valley High School on Saturday night.  Senior Stephanie Wolf had 10 points to pace the Lady Tigers while junior Rachel Divosevic added nine.  Brianna O'Rourke scored 14 to pace the Eagles.

Both teams had trouble scoring in the early going.  Junior Aysha Jones put the Eagles ahead, 2-0, at the 6:10 mark.  Wolf hit one of two from the line, but sophomore Erica Prosser answered with a free throw to make it a 3-1 game almost halfway through the quarter.  Senior Laura Casey tied the game at 3-3, and Wolf dropped in a pair from the line as NA took a 5-3 lead.  It would be the last Lady Tiger lead of the game.  After senior Brianna O'Rourke hit two foul shots to tie the game, 6-0 senior center Eve Pyle made two more to put Oakland Catholic ahead 7-5.  O'Rourke's trey increased the lead to 10-5 before Wolf made one of two foul shots to cut it to 10-6.  After Pyle scored on a putback, senior Cara Davies hit a jumper to cut the margin to 12-8.  OC finished the quarter with a pair of treys, one by senior Sarah Bucar, and one at the buzzer by Pyle as the Eagles moved out to an 18-8 advantage after one quarter.

O'Rourke hit a deuce to open the second quarter scoring, but Davies scored on a fast break to make it 20-10 just 28 seconds into the period.  The scoring slowed before Pyle pushed the lead to 22-10 at the 5:09 mark.  After O'Rourke hit a pair from the stripe, senior Rebecca Mapel scored after an offensive rebound, and senior Mallory Skarupa made one of two from the line as NA cut the lead to 24-13.  Skarupa put back a rebound to make it a 24-15 game, but O'Rourke answered with her second triple of the game to give Oakland Catholic a 27-15 lead at the intermission.

NA Head Coach Will Saunders decided to go with a man-to-man defense in the second half and it paid big dividends.  The Lady Tigers opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run.  After Wolf scored with a drive and left hand layup, Divosevic dropped in her first basket of the game at the 6:53 mark to cut the lead to 27-19.  Casey followed with a pair of foul shots, and Dudas hit a long jumper from the left side to make it a 27-23 contest.  Divosevic's second hoop of the quarter reduced the margin to two points at 27-25 at the 3:34 mark.  O'Rourke finally scored for the Eagles to break the streak and move the lead to 29-25.  After Divosevic scored again, Wolf tied the game at 29-29.  After Bucar hit a pair of free throws to put OC ahead, 31-29, the pace of the game slowed.  Neither team could score again and the teams went to the final period with the Eagles holding the lead by two points.

The fourth quarter was a defensive struggle until the end.  Divosevic scored from the right baseline to tie the game at 31-31 at the 6:27 mark.  The Eagles continued to play a slowdown game and were able to make two of four from the line to take a 33-31 lead with 3:32 remaining.  During the period, NA was unable to score.  With 1:57 left, Pyle hit two of two from the line to push the margin to 35-31.  Wolf answered with a drive to the hoop but missed the foul shot as NA trailed, 35-33, with 1:26 on the clock.  The Tigers got the ball back and set up Divosevic who was fouled.  The NA junior made one of two to cut the margin to 35-34 with just 56.6 remaining.  The Eagles were able to work the clock down to 11 seconds before NA was able to foul.  Pyle made one of two, but the Tigers got the rebound.  Wolf moved the ball into front court and called a time out.  After another time out, the in bounds pass was intercepted by Prosser who took it the length of the court for a layup at the buzzer to give the Eagles a hard-earned 38-34 victory.

It was a good comeback by the Lady Tigers against the top seed in the tournament.  In the second half, NA held OC to just 2 field goals in 16 attempts, one coming at the buzzer.  Overall, the Lady Tigers kept the Eagles to just 10 of 40 (25%) from the field.  NA shot 13 for 37 (35.1%), but in the second half, they converted on 8 for 16.  The Lady Tigers actually had three more field goals, but the difference was in threes (3-0) and at the line were OC made 13 to NA's 8.  The NA defense caused fourteen turnovers while the Tigers committed 12.

With the loss, the NA overall record dropped to 16-10 on the season.  The Lady Tigers hopes for a PIAA berth are still alive.  Oakland Catholic moves on to the semifinals for a matchup against Mt. Lebanon.  If Oakland Catholic defeats Mt. Lebanon in the semifinals, NA will be awarded a place in the state playoffs.

LADY TIGERS HOLD OFF PENN-TRAFFORD, 51-44, IN FIRST ROUND OF PLAYOFFS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers built a 37-24 lead after three quarters and held off a Penn-Trafford rally to defeat the Lady Warriors, 51-44, in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs at Plum High School on Monday night.  Junior Rachel Divosevic led NA in scoring with 19 points while senior Stephanie Wolf chipped in with 10.  Jenna Petrini had 16 points to pace Penn-Trafford.

The Lady Tigers got off to a slow start, scoring only six points in the first quarter.  Junior Emily Phillips scored her only basket of the game to give Penn-Trafford a 2-0 lead 58 seconds into the game.  Divosevic dropped in a pair of foul shots to tie the game at 2-2, and Wolf scored from under the basket to put NA ahead, 4-2, at the 5:08 mark.  Junior forward Kristen Kudrick put back a rebound to put P-T ahead again, but Divosevic answered with a pair of foul shots to tie the game at 6-6.  Kudrick scored again and Petrini hit her first hoop of the game to give the Lady Warriors a 10-6 advantage after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the Lady Tigers began to find the range.  Senior Nicole Dudas came off the bench to drain a trey at the 6:40 mark to cut the lead to 10-9.  Divosevic hit a pair of free throws, and senior Laura Casey drove down the lane for a layup to give NA the lead again at 13-10.  After Divosevic hit a short baseline jumper, junior Mary Bair hit from long range to cut the margin to 15-12.  Divosevic scored again and added a foul shot to push the lead to 18-12 at the 2:22 mark.  After a baseline layup by senior Jen Lyman, Dudas hit her second triple of the quarter to increase the lead to 21-14.  Lyman scored again with seven seconds remaining, but senior Cara Davies threw in a long trey at the buzzer to give the Lady Tigers a 24-16 advantage at the intermission.  The NA defense was outstanding in the first half, forcing thirteen Warrior turnovers.

The Lady Tigers continued their good defensive play in the third quarter as NA extended the lead.  After Kudrick opened the scoring from under the basket, NA answered with three straight baskets with Divosevic, Casey and Dudas all scoring to push the lead to 30-18.  Petrini came back to score for P-T, but Wolf answered with a putback to make it 32-20.  Bair's basket cut it to ten, but Wolf made one of two from the line and scored on a left-handed layup as the lead went to 35-22.  After Petrini scored again, sophomore Maria Nolan drove the baseline to score as the Lady Tigers took a 37-24 lead into the final quarter.

Penn-Trafford came out strong early in the final period, scoring the first eight points to cut the lead to 37-32.  A  trey by Bair, a traditional three-point play by Petrini, and another hoop by Petrini put P-T back in the game.  After a time out, the Lady Tigers regrouped with Divosevic scoring from the baseline to push the lead back to 39-32.  Petrini wasn't finished, however, as she hit another jumper, but Wolf and Divosevic came back with quick hoops to make it 43-34 with 4:39 remaining.  After Bair scored to cut the lead to seven, NA Coach Will Saunders slowed the pace of the game.  The Lady Warriors were forced to foul, but NA was able to make only 8 of 17 from the line down the stretch.  P-T was unable to take advantage of the misses, although Bair's basket with 28.9 left brought the Lady Warriors to within six at 50-44.  Time ran out on Penn-Trafford with Casey hitting one of two from the line to finish out the scoring in a 51-44 Lady Tiger victory.

Statistically, both teams hit seventeen field goals.  NA made 17 of 36 for a 47.2% while P-T was 17 of 46 for 36.9%.  The difference was in threes as NA hit three and P-T just one, and at the foul line where the Lady Tigers made 14 of 28 while the Lady Warriors made 9 of 12.  It was a good defensive effort for the Lady Tigers who forced 22 P-T turnovers while NA committed 14.

With the win, the Lady Tigers advance to the quarterfinals where they will meet top-ranked Oakland Catholic.  The date, site and time of game have not yet been announced.  We will post the information as soon as we receive it.

Wolf opened the second half scoring with a basket just 32 seconds into the third quarter to give NA a 23-21 lead.  After Alabeck answered to tie the game, NA went on a 9-0 run.  Two quick baskets by Divosevic followed by a Wolf hoop gave NA a 29-23 advantage.  Davies hit her third triple of the contest to push the margin to 32-23 at the 2:21 mark.  A foul shot by Kristen Tedesco and a basket by Sieber brought North Hills back to within six at 32-26.  After Wolf hit two from the line, Tedesco scored again, but the Lady Tigers held a 34-28 advantage after three quarters.

The Lady Tigers scored the first six points of the final quarter to take a commanding 40-28 lead.  Skarupa scored two quick baskets from under the hoop and Wolf tallied from in close during the run.  After Alabeck answered with a trey, Yakelis banked in her second basket of the game to push the margin to 42-31.  Senior Bridget Rectenwald dropped in two from the line before Wahl hit a three to cut it to 44-34 with 3:24 remaining.  Rectenwald scored again to push the margin to 46-34 at the 3:08 mark.  Davies hit a deuce, Wolf then hit a pair from the stripe and senior Nicole Dudas scored on a layup to increase the lead to 52-34 with just 1:12 on the clock.  Alabeck was able to make two of two from the line to close out the scoring as the Lady Tigers went on to a 52-36 victory.

It was a total team effort by the Lady Tigers on Senior Night.  All ten seniors saw playing time as Coach Saunders used his entire squad of 16 players.  Nine Lady Tigers reached the scoring column in the game.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network named senior Cara Davies as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Lady Tigers finished section play with a record of 9-5, good for third place and a playoff spot.  The overall NA record stands at 15-9.  The WPIAL pairings meeting will be held Tuesday to determine the date, opponent, site and time of the first playoff game.  We will post the pairings as soon as we receive them.

LADY TIGERS RALLY TO EDGE PINE-RICHLAND, 34-31

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

After falling behind by four points in the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers rallied to defeat the Pine-Richland Rams, 34-31, at the Senior High gym on Friday night.  Senior Stephanie Wolf had 12 points to pace NA to their fifth victory in the last six games.  Annie Zopf and Kylie Miller had seven points each to pace the Rams.

The Lady Tigers got off to a good start early in the first quarter.  Senior Laura Casey hit a three to open the scoring and give NA a 3-0 advantage just 30 seconds into the contest.  After Ashley Boys answered with a trey, senior Rebecca Mapel scored on a fast break and Wolf hit a long jumper just inside the arc as the Lady Tigers took a 7-3 lead at the 5:42 mark.  Junior Rachel Divosevic got loose under the basket and scored to push it to 9-3, and Wolf followed with another long deuce to give NA an 11-3 lead.  Kelly Slingwine came back for the Rams with a hoop to cut it to 11-5, but senior Mallory Skarupa made a nice play under the basket to score with 47 seconds left as the lead went to 13-5.  Sophomore Tricia Adamczyk answered with a triple to cut the margin to 13-8 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the Lady Tigers continued to shoot well.  After Zopf made one of two from the line, Wolf scored two straight baskets to push the lead to 17-9 with 3:45 remaining in the half.  Both teams slowed the pace at this point.  Divosevic added one of two from the stripe, and then hit another field goal as the Tiger lead went to 20-9.  A hoop by Slingwine cut the lead to 20-11 at the 2:33 mark.  Mapel closed out the first half scoring to give the Lady Tigers a 22-11 lead at the intermission.  The hustling NA defense held P-R to just three points in the quarter.

The third quarter was not kind to NA as they failed to score.  Meanwhile, Pine-Richland continued to chip away at the lead.  A three by Boys cut it to 22-14 at the 7:01 mark, and Slingwine's basket made it 22-16.  NA continued to pressure Zopf, the Rams' leading scorer, but the P-R senior converted four straight foul shots near the end of the quarter to cut the lead to 22-20 after three periods of play.

After Liza Mergenthaler dropped in a hoop under the basket to tie the score at the 7:12 mark, senior Kate Winland drove through the Ram defense to put NA back on top, 24-22.  Senior Kylie Miller then came alive for the Rams, scoring a hoop to tie the score at 24-24.  Zopf gave the Rams their first lead of the night at 26-24, but missed a foul shot that would have completed a three-point play.  Miller scored again to put P-R ahead, 28-24, with 4:15 left in the game.  NA regrouped, however, at this point.  Wolf scored her first basket since the first half to cut the lead to 28-26, and sophomore Kristen Beatty put back a rebound to tie the game at 28-28 at the 3:31 mark.  Again, the Rams slowed the pace and Miller was able to convert one of two foul shots to give P-R a 29-28 advantage.  Beatty was able to score again at the 1:32 mark to put NA back on top, 30-29.  Senior Cara Davies followed with a big hoop to push the lead to three with 1:20 on the clock.  Miller answered with a pair of foul shots to cut it to 32-31 with just 25.6 seconds left.  The Rams were forced to foul, but Wolf dropped in pair of free throws to push the lead back to three with 24.3 on the clock.  Pine-Richland was unable to score in the remaining seconds, and the Lady Tigers came away with a hard-earned 34-31 victory.

It was a great defensive effort by the Lady Tigers, holding the first-place Rams to just 31 points.  In addition, NA was able to keep Zopf to just seven points, ten under her average.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Stephanie Wolf as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Lady Tigers improved their section record to 7-5, the overall mark to 13-9.  NA now stands in a tie for third place in the section with just one week remaining in the regular season.  The top four teams will qualify for the WPIAL Playoffs. The Lady Tigers will travel to Fox Chapel on Monday to meet the Foxes in a key section contest.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
