NORTH HILLS HAMMERS TIGERS, 15-3

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The North Hills Indians overwhelmed the Tigers, 15-3, at the Senior High field on Friday afternoon.  NA fell behind early and could not get hits with men on base as they stranded fourteen runners in five innings.  Senior RF Andy Trettel had two doubles and a single to pace the Tigers.

The first inning started poorly for the Tigers with a walk to second baseman Brian Wisniewski, a bunt single by RF Brad Scullion, and another walk to shortstop Andrew Heck.  After 3B Jesse Bauer drove in a run with a ground out, center fielder Pat Bauer lined a single to center to score two more runs as the Indians took an early 3-0 lead.  In the bottom of the inning, Trettel led off with a double down the left field line.  With two outs, senior DH Rick Raraigh walked but NH pitcher Andrew Wyzkoski got a fly ball to center field to end the inning.

In the bottom of the second, the Tigers loaded the bases with two outs on a base hit to left field by senior catcher Ian Overbaugh and two walks.  Once again, Wyzkoski got the final out on a foul pop fly.

The Indians added five more runs in the top of the third.  A bases loaded double by catcher Geoff Lyons drove in a pair and LF Ryan Fairbrother singled in another as senior starting pitcher Jack Connolly was replaced by senior Don Cook.  Wisniewski singled home two more runs to give North Hills an 8-0 lead going into the bottom of the third..  Once again, the Tigers loaded the bases with two outs as senior shortstop Dave Bergstrom doubled to deep left and Connolly and Overbaugh drew walks.  Wyzkowski continued to keep NA scoreless as he got a gorund out to end the threat.

North Hills put the game away with seven more runs in the top of the fourth inning.  With senior Ryan McCombs on the mound, three Indians batters drew walks.  With one out, Lyons doubled to deep center field to clear the bases and bring in another NA relief pitcher.  Senior lefthander Nick Merolillo came in to pitch.  A base hit by 1B Josh Milligan knocked in another run and a base hit and hit batsman loaded the bases again.  Heck drove a long triple to the fence in right center field to clear the bases and give NH a commanding 15-0 lead.

The Tigers had to score a run in the bottom of the fourth to avoid the 15-run mercy rule.  After Trettel singled to right field, senior LF Rich Doyle grounded to third but the throw to second was wide.  Lapinski then hit a long fly ball to left center field that fell for a base hit to load the bases.  Raraigh drew a walk to drive in the first NA run and extend the game.  Wyzkoski ended the threat by getting a strikeout and ground out.

After Merolillo got the side in order in the top of the fifth, NA was faced with the ten-run mercy rule.  Needing four runs to stay alive, the Tigers managed to score just two.  Overbaugh led off with an infield single and Duffett followed with a double to left.  Senior 2B Phil Greenblatt lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score CR Mike O'Neill.  Trettel then hit his second double of the game to drive in Duffett and bring in Wisniewski to pitch for the Indians.  After a pop fly out, Lapinski singled to right and Raraigh walked.  As was the case all day, however, the Tigers could not get the hit with the bases loaded and North Hills took home the 15-3 victory.

It was a long and strange game.  North Hills took advantage of seven walks and eleven hits leaving only four runners on base.  The Tigers had nine hits and seven walks but left the bases loaded in four of the five innings played.  For his efforts at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Andy Trettel as the Player of the Game.

With the loss, the Tigers dropped to 2-2 in section, 6-2 overall.  NA will host a section doubleheader today with makeups of rained out games.  At 11:30 am, Butler will provide the opposition while Kiski Area will be the opponent in a 3:00 pm contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will broadcast both games LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 11:15 am.

Senior RHP Sam O'Neill got the side in order in the second.  In the bottom of the inning, junior 3B Dave Duffett doubled down the left field line but did not score.  Shaler took the lead in the top of the third when Lombardo doubled with the bases loaded scoring all three runs.  NA came back in the bottom of the inning.  Doyle left off with a double to left and went to third when the throw to second was wild.  Lapinski brought him home with a groundout to short.  After three innings, Shaler held a 5-4 advantage.

After O'Neill got the side in order in the top of the fourth, thanks to a 6-3 double play engineered by NA shortstop Dave Bergstrom, the Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the inning.  With one out, senior DH Ian Overbaugh doubled inside third.  After Duffett singled to left to move Overbaugh to third, a wild pitch scored the run to tie the game at 5-5.

In the top of the fifth, Shaler LHP Jon Grubic led off with a walk.  When RF Troy Handza singled to right field, NA Coach Tim Banner brought Cook in to pitch.  Lombardo singled to right field, but Tiger RF Rick Raraigh nailed Grubic at the plate with a perfect one hop throw.  A ground ball to second scored Handza to give Shaler the lead again at 7-6.   In the bottom of the inning, the Tigers regained the lead.  A single by Doyle, a walk to Raraigh, and a single to left by Bergstrom loaded the bases with one out.  With John Kobler pitching in relief, Songer grounded to short.  The ball was booted and rolled into left field allowing two runs to score to give NA a 7-6 lead after five innings.

The Tigers put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.  With one out, Trettel led off with a single off the pitcher's glove, Doyle followed with a base hit to right moving Trettel to third.  Lapinski then lined a shot into the gap in left center field to score both runners and give the Tigers a 9-6 lead.  Lombardo came in to pitch and struck out Raraigh looking.  With two outs, Bergstrom beat out an infield single.  Songer followed with an infield single and Lapinski scored when the throw to first was wide.  Overbaugh added another run with a base hit to right field.  After six innings, the Tigers held a commanding 11-6 lead.

Cook retired the side in order in the seventh striking out two of the three batters he faced.  Over three innings of pitching, Cook allowed only one hit and struck out four as he earned the victory.  It was a good win for the Tigers after a tough loss at Seneca Valley on Monday.  For his efforts at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Rich Doyle as the Player of the Game.

TIGERS DOWN AMBRIDGE, 12-2, IN SEASON OPENER

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers needed only five innings to defeat Ambridge, 12-2, in the season opener at the Senior High field on Monday afternoon.  Senior DH Rick Raraigh blasted a long triple into the left center field gap to score a pair of runners in the bottom of the fifth that ended the game because of the ten-run rule.  Senior 2B Justin Napper had a double and senior CF Andy Trettel had two RBIs as the Tigers opened their season on a successful note.

In the top of the first, Tiger junior righthander Sam O'Neill struck out the side allowing only a two-out single to shortstop Rick Moyer.  In the bottom of the first, NA took the lead for good.  With one out, senior LF Nick Merolillo reached on an error.  After walks to Trettel and senior 1B Marek Lapinski, Raraigh grounded back to the mound.  Ambridge pitcher Nathan Cybak through wild to the plate allowing two runners to score.  The two unearned runs gave the Tigers a 1-0 advantage after one inning.

In the  top of the second after an error, O'Neill struck out DH Matt Kaunert.  Right fielder Chris Mylan followed with a double to right center field.  O'Neill got out of the jam with a struck out and ground out to keep the Tigers on top, 2-0.  In the bottom of the inning, NA added two more runs.  Junior 3B Dave Duffett lined a single to center field to lead off the inning. After one out, senior RF Rich Doyle reached on an error.  With two outs, Trettel lined a single to left field to score both runners and give NA a 4-0 lead after two.

Junior righthander Ryan McCombs came in to pitch the third.  After a fly ball to center field and a walk to catcher Cory Moyer, shortstop Rick Moyer grounded a hard shot off the leg of McCombs for a base hit.  McCombs then got cleanup hitter Patrick Zehnder on a pop up to second and struck out 3B Bryan Borkowski to end the threat.  Cybak got the Tigers in order in the bottom of the third.  The score remained 4-0 going into the top of the fourth.

With Merolillo coming in from left field to pitch, Ambridge picked up two unearned runs.  After DH Kaunert led off with a single to right center, Merolillo fanned RF Chris Mylan.  Left fielder David Duke then reached on an error.  Center fielder Chris Harris followed with a base hit to right field to score PR Hank Ford to cut the NA lead to 4-1.  After Merolillo struck out 2B Nathan Stonfer, catcher Moyer reached on an error that allowed Duke to score the second run of the inning.  Shortstop Rick Moyer ended the inning with a ground ball back to the mound.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers added six more runs on just one base hit.  Cybak began to tire in the inning and began by hitting Duffett.  Napper followed with a line shot over the center fielder's head for a double.  Doyle sent a long sacrifice fly to center field scoring Duffett to make it 5-1.  Cybak then hit Merolillo with a pitch.  After Trettel reached on a fielder's choice, Lapinski walked to force in another run and end the day for Cybak.  Senior RH Andy Burlett came in to pitch and got Raraigh to ground to first.  The throw to the plate was late and NA had another run.  After Bergstrom drew a walk, Burlett then hit Overbaugh to force in a run.  A wild pitch scored another Tiger run before Burlett got a strike out for the second out of the inning.  Napper was hit by a pitch, the fourth NA batter in the inning to reach base via the hit batsman.  Doyle grounded back to the mound to end the inning, but not before the Tigers scored six runs to take a 10-2 lead into the top of the fifth.

Overbaugh went from catcher to pitcher in the top of the fifth.  After Zehnder led off with a base hit to right field, Overbaugh struck out the next two hitters and got Mylan on a ground ball to third to end the inning.  In the bottom of the inning with one out, Burlett hit junior catcher Dylan Songer and junior 1B Shawn Davis with pitches extending the total NA batters hit to six.  Zehnder came in to pitch to Raraigh who ended the game with his long drive to left center field.

It was a good opening day win for the Tigers.  Coach Tim Banner had a chance to play a lot of players and used four pitchers in five innings to earn the win.  Starter Sam O'Neill looked good in his two innings, striking out five Bridger batters.  Ambridge helped things with some sloppy fielding and gifts by the pitching staff in the form of four walks and six hit batters.  For his game winning hit, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Rick Raraigh as the Player of the Game.

The Tigers will travel to Mt. Lebanon this afternoon to meet the Blue Devils in a non-section contest.  Game time is scheduled for 4:15 pm.  NA will open section play next Monday when they visit Seneca Valley for a 4:00 pm contest.
