NORTH ALLEGHENY VARSITY BOYS' TENNIS

MATCH SUMMARIES

CENTRAL CATHOLIC FALLS TO TIGERS, 4-1

Playing outdoors for the first time in 16 days, the Tigers downed a good Central Catholic team, 4-1, at the Senior High courts on Thursday afternoon.  NA swept the singles play with wins by freshman Andrew Marczak, sophomore Ryan Troia, and sophomore Nick Dulac.

The number one doubles team of sophomores Matt Smith and Matt Kosovec won a convincing two-set victory over Central's top two players.

The Tigers will host Butler this afternoon at the Senior High courts in a crucial section match.  The starting time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

SMITH WINS TWO BUT LOSES IN SEMIS,
THIRD PLACE MATCH

Sophomore Matt Smith won two matches in the WPIAL Section 2-AAA Singles Tournament at the Senior High courts on Tuesday afternoon but was defeated in the semifinals.  Senior Shawn Palmeri was defeated by Nick Kluthe of Pine-Richland, 10-7, in the first round.

Smith downed Josh Elser of Ambridge, 10-1, in the first round before eliminating Matt Slamecka of Butler, 10-7, in the quarterfinals.  In the semis, top-seeded Casey Watt of Pine-Richland defeated Smith, 6-0, 6-0. 

On Wednesday afternoon, Smith dropped a two-set match to Steve Herchko of North Hills, 6-2, 6-3.  The loss kept Smith from advancing to the WPIAL Singles Tournament to be held at NA on Monday and Tuesday.

The Tiger team will host Fox Chapel this afternoon in a 3:30 pm non-section match at the Senior High courts.

SHALER FALLS TO TIGERS, 4-1

The Tigers got back on the winning track with a 4-1 victory at Shaler on Tuesday afternoon.  NA swept the singles matches behind the play of sophomore Matt Smith, freshman Andy Marczak, and sophomore Ryan Troia.  The doubles team of senior Matt and sophomore Nick Dulac picked up a point at #1 doubles.

The Section Singles Tournament will be played on the Senior High courts next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Representing NA will be sophomore Matt Smith and senior Shawn Palmeri

NORTH HILLS ENDS 23-MATCH LOSING STREAK TO TIGERS WITH 4-1 VICTORY

The North Hills Indians downed the Tigers, 4-1, at the Senior High courts on Monday afternoon.  The win was the first for NH in twelve years and ended a streak of 23 consecutive wins for the Tigers against North Hills.

With the loss, the Tigers closed out the first half of section play with a 5-2 record.  The overall NA mark is 5-3-1.  The Tigers will try to get back on the winning track this afternoon when they travel to Shaler for a 3:30 pm section match.

TIGERS OUTLAST SENECA VALLEY, 4-1

In a hotly contested match, the Tigers defeated Seneca Valley, 4-1, at Seneca on Friday afternoon.  Sophomore Matt Smith and freshman Andrew Marczak won hard-fought singles matches to give NA the lead.

The doubles teams edged their Raider opponents to give the Tigers the the victory.  The brother team of senior Matt and sophomore Nick Dulac came through as did the senior team of Adam Leach and Sol Tong.

With the win, the Tigers improved their section record to 4-1, the overall mark to 5-2-1 on the season.  NA will continue section play on Monday afternoon when they host rival North Hills.  Match time is scheduled for 3:30 pm at the Senior High courts.

COME ON OUT AND SUPPORT THE TIGERS AGAINST THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD RIVAL!!!!!

FRANKLIN REGIONAL TOPS TIGERS, 4-1, IN NON-SECTION MATCH

The Tigers were defeated by Franklin Regional, 4-1, in a non-section match on Thursday afternoon at the Franklin Regional courts.  The loss dropped the NA overall record to 4-2-1 on the season.

NA will travel to Seneca Valley this afternoon to meet the Raiders in a section match.  The scheduled starting time is set for 4:00 pm.

TIGERS TOP AMBRIDGE, 4-1

The Tigers upped their section record to 3-1, the overall mark to 4-1-1 with a 4-1 victory over Ambridge at the Senior High courts on Wednesday afternoon.  Senior Shawn Palmeri and freshman Andrew Marczak won their singles matches.

In doubles play, seniors Adam Leach and Matt Dulac teamed up in the first part of a doubles sweep.  At #2 doubles, sophomore Nick Dulac and senior Sol Tong, who made his varsity debut in the starting lineup, were also victorious.

This afternoon, the Tigers will travel to Franklin Regional to meet the Panthers in a non-section match.   The starting time is set for 4:00 pm.

TIGER COMEBACK BEATS BUTLER, 3-2

After dropping the first two singles matches, the Tigers staged a dramatic comeback at Butler on Monday afternoon to edge the Tornado, 3-2.  Both doubles teams were victorious and a comeback win by freshman Andrew Marczak at #3 singles gave NA the victory.

At #1 doubles, it was the senior team of Shawn Palmeri and Matt Dulac along with the team of senior Adam Leach and sophomore Nick Dulac that swept the doubles to put NA back in the match.

With the win, NA improved their section record to 2-1, the overall mark to 3-1-1.  The Tigers will host Ambridge tomorrow afternoon in a section match at the Senior High courts.  Match time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.

TIGERS REBOUND TO DEFEAT HAMPTON, 5-0

The Tigers got back on the winning track with an easy  5-0 victory over Hampton in a section match at Windwood on Friday.  Sophomore Matt Smith, sophomore Matt Kosovec, and senior Shawn Palmeri led the way with victories in the singles matches.

The Tigers swept the doubles matches on their way to the shutout victory.  At #1 doubles, the senior team of Adam Leach and Nick Dulac was victorious as was the #2 doubles duo of Amdrew Marczak and sophomore Ryan Troia.

NA will be back in action again on Monday afternoon when they travel to Butler for a section match.  The scheduled starting time is set for 3:30 pm.

TIGERS DROP 5-0 DECISION TO PINE-RICHLAND

The Pine-Richland Rams defeated the Tigers, 5-0, at the Senior High courts on Wednesday afternoon handing NA their first section loss.  On Tuesday afternoon, the Tigers and Erie McDowell battled for almost four hours with the match ending in a 2-2 tie.  The teams were unable to finish the match played indoors at Windwood.

With the loss to P-R, the Tiger section record dropped to 1-1 while the overall mark went to 1-1-1.  NA will travel to Mt. Lebanon this afternoon to meet the Blue Devils in a non-section contest.  Match time is scheduled for 3:30 pm

TIGERS BLANK SHALER, 5-0, TO OPEN SPRING SPORTS SEASON

The Tigers took up where they left off last year as they opened the 2007 season with a 5-0 shutout of Shaler at Windwood on Monday afternoon.  Sophomore Matt Kosovec, senior Shawn Palmeri and Andrew Marczak led the way with easy victories in the singles matches.

In doubles competition, sophomore Matt Smith and senior Matt Dulac teamed up to take the #1 doubles match while senior Adam Leach and sophomore Nick Dulac took the #2 doubles in straight sets.

The Tigers will host Erie McDowell this afternoon in a non-section match.  Because of weather conditions, the match will be moved in doors again with action scheduled to get under way at 3:00 pm at Windwood.
