To listen to a replay of the match, click here!

Led by 6-7 junior MH John Skarupa who had 14 kills eight blocks and a service ace, the Tigers defeated Shaler in three straight games at the Senior High gym on Tuesday night.  The Tigers won the first game, 25-20, took the second, 25-17, and finished off the Titans with a 25-23 victory in game three.

The teams battled on even terms in the early part of game one.  After a Skorupa block put NA on top, 1-0, the teams exchanged hitting errors.  Two Skorupa kills gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead, but Shaler kept battling back.  Junior OH J.J. Leroux went down the line to put the Tigers on top, 6-5, and a kill by senior MH John Nolan made it 7-5.  Two NA errors allowed Shaler to tie the game before Leroux put back an overpass to make it an 8-7 game.  A kill down the middle by senior OH Matt Snyder extended the lead to 9-7.  After an NA hitting error, Shaler rallied behind OH Brian Riley to tie the game at 10-10.  A Skorupa kill was answered by a block by Alex Larrimer that tied the game at 11-11.  With Snyder serving, the Tigers went on a 5-0 run with Skarupa picking up two kills.  Shaler continued to rally and got within two at 18-16.  Junior DS John Wappler served a pair of points to extend the lead to 22-16 before Tom Rectenwald scored a kill for Shaler.  Skarupa and Riley exchanged kills as the score went to 23-19.  Snyder went down the line to push the margin to 24-19, and Skarupa ended the Titans' chances in game one with a big blast as NA won the first game, 25-20.

The Tigers jumped off to a 10-3 lead in game two.  Kills by Snyder, Leroux, junior opposite Steve Nicklas, a tip by junior setter Steve Semler, along with several Shaler hitting errors, marked the run.  As was the case throughout the match, however, Shaler rallied   Two NA hitting errors and a cross-court kill by Riley cut the Tiger lead to 12-7.  After Nolan scored down the middle, Rectenwald blocked for a point to make it 14-9.  The Tigers extended the lead to 18-12 on a Leroux kill off a Shaler overpass and a Skorupa ace that hit the net and fell in.  Shaler came back again to cut the lead to two at 18-16 behind an ace by Riley and two kills by Greg Dunn.  With NA up by two, Dunn scored what appeared to be a kill but he was called for hitting the net.  The Tigers then finished off the match with a 6-1 run.  Leroux served the final six points, including an ace, with Nolan picking up a block and then finishing the game with a strong hit down the middle.  The Tigers won game two, 25-17, to take a two games to none lead in the match.

In game three, the Tigers once again built a 10-3 lead before Shaler rallied.  Wappler started off with four straight serving points with Skarupa scoring on a block and a kill off another Shaler overpass.  After Shaler scored, Nolan put back an overpass, Semler blocked for a point, and Shaler committed several hitting errors.  Shaler rallied again behind a kill by Dunn and two kills by Eric Schubert as the Titans cut the lead to 11-8.  Lerioux went off the Titan blockers and Nolan blocked for a point before Riley answered with a kill as the score went to 13-10.  Junior Derek Zweig came off the NA bench to record a kill before Rectenwald and Schubert answered to to cut the margin to 15-12.  The teams exchanged points with Skorupa picking two kills and Riley one for Shaler.  With the score at 18-15, senior Trevor King blocked for a point and Semler hit a right handed tip to push the margin to 20-15.  After Shaler made it 20-17 on Schubert's kill, Leroux scored again off the blockers and a miscommunication by the Shaler front line allowed NA to take a 22-17 lead.  Schubert scored again and an NA hitting error closed the margin to 22-19.  After a kill by senior opposite Alex Grega, Rectenwald answered to make it 23-20.  Grega scored again with a kill to put the Tigers at game and match point.  Shaler would not go easily, however, as Riley went cross-court and down the line as the Titans closed to within one at 24-23.  Fittingly, Skarupa ended the game and the match with another blast down the middle as the Tigers won game three, 25-23, and the match, three games to none.

Statistically, Skarupa led with 14 kills with Leroux adding 7 and Matt Snyder 5.  After Skarupa's eight blocks, Noland had four, with Semler and Nicklaus recording three each.  Wappler posted nine digs with Leroux picking up four.  Semler recorded 24 assists to pace the Tigers.

It was a good effort by the Tigers against an experienced Shaler team that did not lose a player from last year's squad.  Good setting by Semler allowed the Tiger hitters to control the net.  Good defensive play by Wappler, Leroux, and Semler allowed the Tigers to return serves.  For his efforts at the net, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected John Skarupa as the Player of the Match.

With the win, the Tigers will take a 1-0 section record to Butler tomorrow night as section play continues.  Match time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
