SHALER EDGES LADY TIGERS, 2-1

by Rick Meister

The North Allegheny Lady Tiger softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Shaler at Shaler’s Hilltop Field yesterday when Shaler broke a 1-1 tie by scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to edge NA.

Shaler opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out double to right-center field by shortstop Chelsea Siar and an RBI single to center by the next hitter, designated player Jenna Conrad

The Tigers got even in the sixth. Junior left fielder Jane Miner led off with a single.  Sophomore pinch runner Hannah Jones ran for Miner, and following a Tiger strikeout, junior center fielder Kelsey Fedell was safe on a Shaler error, with Jones holding second on the play.  Junior first baseman Sarah Moore singled to load the bases.  Junior third baseman Stephanie Cassidy hit a fly ball to left field that was misplayed, allowing Jones to score the tying run.  With the bases still loaded and still only one out, the Tigers had a chance to do further damage, but failed to capitalize.  Shaler pitcher Meg Daley was able to get the next two Tiger hitters on a first-to-home force out and a second-to-first groundout to end the inning.

Shaler secured the victory in the bottom of the seventh when first baseman Holly Pefferman led off with a single. Pinch runner Gina Gaus advanced to second on a wild pitch.  A single bythird baseman Erin Fieldhouse put runners on first and third, and an infield single by right fielder Becca Lynch loaded the bases, with Gaus having to hold on the play.  Winning pitcher Meg Daley then ended the game with a Titan win when a high fly ball to short right field was not played by the Tigers, and Gaus ran home with the winning run.

With the loss, NA falls to 3-4 in section play and 3-7 overall.  The Tigers next see action on Thursday when they host the first-place Seneca Valley Raiders at NASH field at 4:00.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 3:45 pm.

NORTH HILLS NIPS LADY TIGERS, 4-3,
 IN EXTRA INNINGS

by Rick Meister

The Lady Tigers dropped a 4-3 decision to North Hills in eight innings yesterday at Scharmyn Park.  North Allegheny rallied from a 3-0 deficit by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth, only to have North Hills score one in the bottom of the eighth to earn a hard-fought victory.

North Hills struck early, using second inning walks to second baseman Kate Murgi and shortstop Stefanie Wiegand to set the table for left fielder Jess Rectenwald’s home run over the left-centerfield fence off of starter Amber Steenbeke to give the Indians a 3-0 lead. Sophomore pitcher Deanna Tritinger relieved in the bottom of the third, and held North Hills scoreless until the fateful eighth.

The 3-0 score remained the same until North Allegheny broke through in the top of the sixth with a three-run rally.  Junior pinch hitter Jane Miner worked a walk to lead off the inning.  Miner was run for by junior shortstop Mary DeMino, who re-entered the game at that point.  Following a DeMino steal of second, junior designated player Julie Heinl followed with an infield single to move DeMino to third.  Sophomore second baseman Christy Cotter drove in DeMino on a 5-4 force play to make the score 3-1.  Stephanie Cassidy followed with a single to put runners at first and second.  Following a 2-3 fielder’s choice out at first on a ball hit in front of the plate by junior center fielder Kelsey Fedell which put Cotter on third and Cassidy on second, freshman pinch runner Hannah Jones went in to run for Cassidy.  Junior first baseman Sarah Moore then looped a single to right-center field to score both Cotter and Jones and tie the game at three.

North Allegheny had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the top of the seventh when junior catcher Jocelyn Dimpel led off with a single, and a North Hills error on DeMino’s sacrifice bunt put NA runners on second and third with no outs, but North Hills pitcher Rachel VanAtta was able to retire the Tigers first three hitters on two strikeouts and a groundout to escape unscathed.

North Hills scored once in the bottom of the eighth to gain the win on a single by center fielder Julie Klein, who was erased at second on a fielder’s choice hit by Weigand. Following a sacrifice that moved Weigand to second, VanAtta walked, and designated player Ally Gross hit a single into center field to drive in the winning run.

It was a game in which the Tigers never let up, but were simply unable to get the key hit to gain the victory.  With the loss, NA falls to 3-3 in section play and 3-6 overall.  The Tigers will next see action when they travel to Shaler next Tuesday to take on the Titans in a 4:00 start.

The Lady Tigers pounded out 15 hits, including eight doubles and a triple, as they defeated Fox Chapel, 13-3, at the Senior High field on Tuesday afternoon.  Junior 1B Sarah Moore led the way with three doubles while junior LF Beth Chidester added three singles while scoring three runs and stealing two bases.  Sophomore RHP Deanna Tritinger pitched four innings and allowed no runs or hits to earn the victory.

Fox Chapel got off to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.  Pitcher Sara Bugajski led off with a single to left field and 3B Chelsea Dabrowski followed with a walk.  Shortstop Amber Colesnick drove in Bugajski with a long double to left center field to make it 1-0.  Left fielder Alicia Haley then hit a double into the right center field gap to drive in two more runs as the Foxes took a three-run lead into the bottom of the inning.  NA was retired in order in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the second, Fox Chapel threatened again.  After CF Mary Cornelius beat out an infield single, junior RHP Julie Heinl retired the next two batters on two fly balls.  Colesnick followed with a single to center field, but Cornelius was thrown out at third on a good throw by junior CF Kelsey Fedell to junior 3B Steph Cassidy.  The Lady Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the second.  With one out, Fedell drilled a line drive double to the fence in right field.  Moore followed with her first double of the game to drive in Fedell and cut the lead to 3-1.  Chidester then beat out an infield single with Moore moving to third.  After Chidester stole second, Fedell scored on a wild pitch.  Junior catcher Jocelyn Dimple tied the game with a base hit up the middle.  After Heinl drew a walk, sophomore 2B Christy Cotter drove a double into the right center field gap that scored both runners to give NA a 5-3 lead after two innings.

Tritinger came in to pitch in the top of the third.  After hitting Haley with her first pitch, catcher Ashley Hauser reached on a fielder's choice.  Tritinger then got two strikeouts and a ground out to end the inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Lady Tigers added two more runs with two outs.  Moore drove her second double to the fence in right center field and came home on Chidester's base hit to center field.  Senior RF Leslie Vanderkolk followed with a long fly ball to left field that was dropped allowing Chidester to score.  NA led, 7-3, after three innings.

In the top of the fourth, Tritinger allowed two walks but no runs.  With one out in the bottom of the inning, Cotter doubled to right center field.  After junior SS Mary DeMino sacrified Cotter to third, Cassidy singled to left field scoring Cotter and giving the Lady Tigers an 8-3 lead after four innings.  Tritinger got the side in order in the fifth and sixth.

In the bottom of the fifth, the NA bats continued their assault on Fox Chapel pitching.  Moore led of with her third double of the game, a drive to deep right center field.  Chidester followed with an infield single moving pinch runner and freshman Kelsey Birsic to third.  After Chidester stole second, Vanderkolk drew a walk to load the bases.  Sophomore Maria Shevchik followed with a pinch-hit double again to right center field to score two more runs.  Vanderkolk then scored on a passed ball and Shevchik on a wild pitch as the Lady Tigers took a commanding 12-3 lead into the sixth inning.  In the bottom of the sixth, Cassidy led off with a long double to deep center field.  Fedell then ended the game with a drive to deep right field that scored Cassidy and invoked the ten-run rule.

It was a key win for the Lady Tigers who were able to move into a second place tie in the section with the win.  Although it was a team effort, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Sarah Moore as the Player of the Game for her offensive fireworks.

With the win, the Lady Tigers improved their section record to 3-2 and moved into a tie for second place in Section 3-AAAA.  NA will travel to rival North Hills tomorrow afternoon for a 4:00 pm afternoon contest.

SECOND SECTION WIN

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Sophomore pitcher Amber Steenbeke pitched 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief on Tuesday afternoon at the Senior High field to lead the Lady Tigers to a 3-1 section victory over Butler.  Junior Steph Cassidy had a double and RBI, Steenbeke added a single and a double, while junior SS Mary DeMino posted an RBI single for the winning Lady Tigers.

In the top of the first, junior right hander Julie Heinl walked a pair of Butler batters but was able to get the final out on a ground ball to third base.  In the bottom of the inning, junior RF Jane Miner led off with an infield single.  After two ground outs, junior CF Kelsey Fedell walked.  When Fedell stole second, the Butler second baseman cut off the throw and threw in the dirt to home plate allowing Miner to score the game's first run.  DeMino followed with a single up the middle scoring Fedell as the Lady Tigers took a 2-0 lead after one inning.

In the top  of the third, Butler's Karra White led off with an infield single and stole second.  Right fielder Karen Cumberlidge followed with a double to left center field scoring White to cut the NA lead to 2-1.  After an out at first base that moved Cumberlidge to third, SS Jenna Geibel walked and stole second.  Steenbeke then came in to pitch and walked catcher Erica Thrower.  With the bases load and one out, Steenbeke struck out 3B Sadie Marak and got DP Trisha Hollerman on a ground ball to short.  NA still led, 2-1, going into the bottom of the third.

In the bottom half of the inning, Steenbeke lined a single to left field to lead off and junior Beth Chidester was sent in as a courtesy runner.  Senior left fielder Beth Polley followed with an infield single to deep short.  Butler pitcher Angel Reddick was able to get the next three batters, however, to stop the threat.  The Lady Tigers held a 2-1 advantage after three innings.

Neither team threatened in the fourth, but Geibel reached second on a wind blown double with two outs in the fifth.  Steenbeke got the third out on a soft line drive to short.  In the bottom of the fifth, Steenbeke drove a double into deep left field with one out.  Once again, Reddick was able to retire the next two batters without NA scoring.  After Marak led off with a single in the top of the sixth, Steenbeke used two strikeouts and a fly ball to left field to keep the Lady Tigers on top, 2-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, DeMino walked to lead off the inning and was sacrificed to second by junior 1B Sarah Moore.  After a ground out moved DeMino to third, Cassidy lined a shot down the left field line that scored DeMino with an important insurance run.  NA took a 3-1 advantage into the top of the seventh.  Steenbeke then retired the side in order to wrap up the victory.

It was an important victory for the Tigers to keep them in good position in the section race.  For her efforts in the field and at the plate, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Steph Cassidy as the Player of the Game.  With the win, NA improved their section record to 2-1.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Pine-Richland tomorrow afternoon to meet the Rams in a 3:30 pm section contest.

LADY TIGERS RETURN FROM NORTH CAROLINA

by Rick Meister

The North Allegheny Girls’ Varsity Softball team traveled to Hickory, North Carolina from March 27 – March 30, 2008, to compete against three highly ranked teams from North Carolina: Alexander Central, Central Cabarrus, and Freedom High Schools.  Although the Tigers were defeated in all three games, 8-3; 5-0; and 3-2, the trip afforded the team the opportunity to assess its strengths and weaknesses and make adjustments for upcoming W.P.I.A.L. play.

In keeping with the spring, 2008, weather pattern, Friday’s game was played under sunny skies with temperatures hovering near the 70 degree mark, while on Saturday the games were played under cloudy skies with intermittent light rain and temperatures falling through the 40’s.  NA was, however, able to play all three scheduled games in their entirety.

The Tigers return to section play this week, hosting Butler on Tuesday and traveling to Pine Richland on Thursday to take on the Rams.
