TIGERS BOYS, GIRLS WIN WPIAL SWIM TITLES

(3/1/13) The North Allegheny Swim Team garnered yet another pair of WPIAL titles on Friday. The Lady Tigers left the competition in their wake and the NA Boys outlasted their opponents to give the Tigers two more championships. The titles are especially sweet as long time head coach Corky Semler is retiring after this season.

The NA Girls were especially dominant at the WPIAL Championships, scoring 417 points to beat second place Oakland Catholic by 160 points. The Eagles were second with 257, and Upper St Clair finished third with 189.5. The Tigers winners of the last five WPIAL titles had numerous swimmers in every event and piled up points all day. Sophomore Morgan Soulia set a WPIAL record in the girls 100-yard freestyle to start the afternoon with a 50.82 score, beating a record set just last year. The records continued to fall as NA Sophomore Jacquelyn Du won the girls 100-yard backstroke with a 55.57 score. It all ended with a flourish as the 400-yard freestyle relay team won in glorious fashion. They set a new WPIAL record, beating a record they set last year with a time of 3:26.55.

On the Boys side, North Allegheny won their seventh WPIAL title in the last eight years, scoring 327 points. The Tigers beat second place Upper St Clair by 57.5 points. The Panthers scored 269.5 and Bethel Park finished in third place with 224 points. The NA Boys were solid, scoring in every event.  Junior Sam Ruttan won the Boys 500 yard freestyle with a score of 4:37.17 to help his team.

The most exciting event of the meet was the last event, and as usual, North Allegheny was front and center. The Tigers were one of the three favorites along with Bethel Park and Upper St Clair. Even though the Boys title was already secured by NA, this event was a grudge match. The Blackhawks and Panthers desperately wanted to beat the Tigers in this event and it showed as both teams took turns with the lead. Hitting the wall heading into the last 25-yards all three swimmers, Sam Ruttan from NA, Erik Brinkoff from Bethel, and Ryan Dudzinski of USC were dead even. The final 25-yards saw the overflow crowd rise to their feet in a deafening crescendo as they watched the Tigers win with a 3:07.73. Bethel Park was .20 behind in second place, and USC was .57 behind in third place.

Up next, the Tigers set their sights on the PIAA Championships on March 15-16.

LADY TIGERS BREAK TWO RECORDS IN DAY ONE OF
WPIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

(2/28/13) After one day of competition at the WPIAL Swimming Championships, the North Allegheny Girls are dominating the field with a team score of 253 points, followed by Oakland Catholic’s 134 and Upper St. Clair’s 114.5. The Lady Tigers not only lead after day one but found a way to best themselves, breaking both the 200-yard freestyle and medley relay records. In the 200 yard freestyle relay, NA improved their WPIAL record set last year of 1:35.01, shaving off .08 seconds with a time of 1:34.93.

In the 200-yard medley NA set the only PIAA record of the afternoon. Setting the WPIAL record last year, North Allegheny fell just shy of also breaking the PIAA mark that was set in 2009 by Emmaus with a time of 1:44.28. This year NA took the record from Emmaus posting a time of 1:43.38.

The NA Boys’ are also in front after the first six events. The Tigers grabbed first place in the 200-yard medley relay and hold an 18.5 point advantage over second place Upper St. Clair.

The WPIAL Championships will continue today at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh with the 100 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle, 100 yard back and breast stroke and the final event, the 400 freestyle relay.
