The North Allegheny girls’ volleyball team earned an eighth straight victory to begin the 2023 season with a 3-o sweep against the North Hills Indians on Thursday night at UPMC Court. The Tigers won by set scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 25-17.

The first set was a seesaw affair that saw the lead change hands four times. North Hills freshman Addison Zdinak powered the upstart Indians to a 16-12 lead in the early going with four kills. However, the Tigers answered back by taking 10 of the next 11 points on their way to a 22-17 advantage. The Indians wouldn’t go away quietly and tied the score at 22-22. A North Hills service error and back-to-back aces by junior Mackenzie Jones allowed North Allegheny to prevail, 25-23. Senior Jaime Frisco led the offense in the first set with four kills on her way to a team-high nine kills on the night.

After outlasting North Hills in the opening set, North Allegheny settled in nicely in set two and jumped out to a 23-10 lead. Despite a late rally by the Indians, the Tigers earned a 25-16 triumph. Seniors Marin Dunaway and Caileigh Duffy contributed to the win. Dunaway posted three kills in the set and totaled seven kills on the evening. Duffy tallied back-to-back aces and finished with five digs for the match.

Set three featured five lead changes in the early stages with North Allegheny leading 17-15 before pulling away for a 25-17 win. North Hills sophomore Ashlyn Fazio did her best to keep the Indians afloat, but timely kills from senior middle hitter Julie Butler, who finished with five on the night, helped the Tigers come out on top.

North Allegheny’s serve-receive played a crucial role in the victory, led by senior libero Avery Butcher, who posted a team-high 22 digs and added a team-best four aces. For her efforts, Butcher was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Match.

Other notable contributors included Jones, Duffy, Macey Casten, Molly Robertson and Kyra Schmidt with five digs each. Robertson and Jones distributed the offense with 15 assists apiece. Jones and Casten each added two aces in a well-rounded effort. Jamie Frisco and senior Ariana Schiller clogged the middle of the net with two blocks each.

With the win, North Allegheny improves to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in Section 1-4A. North Hills falls to 8-4 overall and 1-4 in the section. The Tigers will host Oakland Catholic on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. The match will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
