NA’s Tigers Roar The Loudest, Advance To WPIAL Quarterfinals

A two-out RBI single by Laura Cotter in the top of the seventh inning lifted the North Allegheny Tigers to a 1-0 triumph over the McKeesport Tigers on Tuesday in the opening round of the Class AAAA playoffs. The Cotter base hit in the seventh provided the only run necessary for NA starting pitcher Madi Beining who tossed a complete game one-hitter, striking out seven batters along the way.  McKeesport’s lone hit was a harmless infield single by Kierston Spiewak in the sixth inning. With a masterful performance, Beining was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

With the game scoreless in the top of the seventh, junior Mackenzie Gostomski dropped down a perfect bunt for a two-out infield single. A wild pitch advanced Gostomski to second and Cotter followed with a lined single through the right side of the infield to score Gostomski and give the NA Tigers a 1-0 lead. Beining secured the win with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh.

McKeesport’s Jess Beitler was the hard luck loser with a complete game effort. Beitler surrendered only four hits and worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fifth without yielding a run.

North Allegheny improves to 16-4 on the season and will face Canon-McMillan in the quarterfinals in a rematch of last year’s WPIAL Class AAAA championship.  McKeesport’s season ends with a mark of 13-6. For a look at the Class AAAA Softball brackets, click here.
