Spartans End Tigers’ Streak

Posted on:

On Wednesday evening at NASH Field, the visiting Hempfield Spartans ended the North Allegheny Tigers Varsity Softball Team’s 19-game winning streak with a 7-0 victory.  Hempfield and NA were scoreless through three innings, with starting pitchers Morgan Ryan and NA’s Madi Beining matching pitch-for-pitch through that part of the game.  Both teams changed pitchers in inning number four in a pre-playoff strategy.  Hempfield’s Maddie Ushock and the Tigers’ Mollie Benvenuto each threw a scoreless fourth, but the Spartans employed both little ball and a grand slam home run by Michaela LeDonne as Hempfield gained a 6-0 advantage. The Spartans added one in the sixth to arrive at the final 7-0 tally.

North Allegheny had limited scoring opportunities, but were led by senior center fielder Laura Cotter’s two hits, including a double.  The Tigers uncharacteristically committed three errors that added to Hempfield’s cause.

The loss drops North Allegheny’s overall record to 19-1 while maintaining their 14-0 Section 3AAAA final record.  Playoff pairings on Thursday afternoon will determine NA’s seeding, with twelve teams entering the AAAA Playoffs.  The North Allegheny Athletic Website will post all information as soon as it becomes available.
