North Allegheny boys’ lacrosse hosted Fox Chapel for a section two matchup at Newman Stadium on Wednesday night. The back-and-forth game came down to the wire, and the Foxes took the win over the Tigers 8-7.

Fox Chapel had the advantage at faceoff “X” and the offensive zone to open the game. The Foxes had back-to-back markers from senior Griffin McCaffrey in the middle stages of the first quarter. NA responded with three goals from sophomore Charlie Jones, junior Mason Brown and freshman Brandt Hoffman. The Tigers had a 3-2 edge after one stanza.

The lone goal in the second quarter came courtesy of Dom Rothmeyer and the squads went into the halftime break tied at three.

The Foxes added go-ahead goals from Rothmeyer and Tucker Cullen to open the second half. The Tigers responded with goals from senior Johnny Castillo and Brown’s second of the contest. The teams were tied at five heading into the final period.

Sophomore Evan Wade put NA back in front in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter with a goal. The momentum stayed with the Tigers as the Foxes were called for an elbow to the face, a two-minute, unreleaseable penalty. Fox Chapel ended up causing a turnover and scoring a short-handed goal to tie it up again. Within seconds of the penalty expiring, the Foxes added a second Tucker Cullen score to take a 7-6 lead. Mason Brown’s hat-trick goal with just over four minutes left tied the game once more. But Fox Chapel had the last laugh when Brady Matthews netted his second goal of the contest with just five seconds left in regulation.

Sophomore Sam Walters had another strong game in net, stopping 10 shots and registering a takeaway. Freshman Nick Cook had another productive game as the FOGO, contributing eight faceoff wins and a ground ball. Senior Ian Boal had five ground balls and two takeaways. He was awarded Wright Automotive Player of the Game honors for his efforts.

North Allegheny falls to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in section play. The Tigers host Hill Academy on Friday at Newman Stadium. That matchup will be broadcast live on the NA Sports Network.
