A non-section Saturday matinee match was on the docket, as the Norwin Knights paid a visit to Newman Stadium to take on North Allegheny. After an even start, the Tigers took control late in the half and won 3-1 over the Knights.

Ella Brinkley had an opportunity halfway through the first period, but her chip from 18 yards just slid wide of the post. Captain Rosalia Varlotta, who returned to the lineup from an early-season injury, netted the game’s first goal. The senior took a back pass from Amari Ruffus and fired a right-footed shot into the net for her first marker of the season to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.

North Allegheny took a 2-0 lead in the 38th minute. Senior Mia Barsotti made a nice turn near the left side of the box to find a lane to the net and sent a right-footed shot inside the far post for her first goal of the season.

Kieran Shannon upped the Tigers’ lead to 3-0 early in the second half. The senior dragged the ball to her left foot from the right side of the box and fired in her 5 th goal of the season in the 44th minute.

Norwin was able to spoil the shutout for Jordan Beemer late in the match, when Leesia Phetsomphou took a pass from Neeve Graham and found the net with just over three minutes remaining to make the final score 3-1.

The win improved North Allegheny’s record to (3-1-1), and the Tigers are unbeaten in their last four matches. Norwin (0-2-3) is still searching for its first win of the season.

With her return to the lineup highlighted by her first goal of the season, Varlotta was chosen as the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

The Tigers are now through with their season-opening non-section slate. North Allegheny will open AAAA-3 play on Monday night when they visit Seneca Valley to take on the Raiders before home section contests against Butler and North Hills.
