Rams Edge Tigers In WPIAL Quarterfinals

For the third time in as many years, the North Allegheny boys’ lacrosse team hosted section rival Pine-Richland in the WPIAL Quarterfinals from Newman Stadium. The 4/5 matchup was projected to be a close game, and it lived up to the hype and intensity, with the Rams coming out victoriously with an 8-7 score. This was the first postseason win for PR in those three years.
North Allegheny got the ball rolling in the opening minutes on a goal from junior Mason Brown. Pine-Richland clapped back with two goals to end the first quarter from Jackson Reba and Callan DeGrands. PR led 2-1 heading to the second quarter.
The Rams added two more goals at the beginning of the second frame from Nate Komoroski and DeGrands, putting PR up 4-1. NA responded with a bouncing goal from senior Johnny Castillo and a Charlie Jones marker assisted by Castillo. Drew Sharp added a late goal for the Rams, who led 5-3 at the half.
In the third, North Allegheny’s leading scorer, sophomore Evan Wade, notched a goal on the doorstep after accepting a pass from senior Colt Gibson to bring the score to 5-4. Pine added three more markers to secure the lead. Nick Jones scored before AJ Guiffre tallied a goal on the man-up advantage. DeGrands scored his hat-trick marker with 5:10 remaining in the third, putting PR up 8-4.
NA added three goals late in the game, with senior Nick Sichak scoring on the man-up opportunity. Brown also scored his second of the game, while freshman Brandt Hoffman added a goal with five minutes remaining, assisted by Castillo. Hoffman’s extra effort through the match earned him Wright Automotive Player of the Game.
Mason Brown played well, adding three groundballs and a caused turnover. Freshman Nick Cook held his own at faceoff “X” with six wins. Both senior Alex Costa and sophomore Sam Walters made plays in the game. Costa took the loss and finished with five saves. Walters had four stops.

Sichak’s Return To Lineup Sparks Tiger Win Over Raiders

For the first time this season, senior Nick Sichak suited up with the boys’ lacrosse team for a game after recovering from an injury over the winter. North Allegheny defeated Seneca Valley in the final section game of the regular season 13-9 in Harmony on Tuesday night.
NA took an early 2-0 lead with goals from freshman Carter Neiport and senior Johnny Castillo. Seneca clapped back with two goals of their own to tie the game before the end of the first period.
Neiport opened the scoring in the second quarter, followed by two Raider goals as Seneca Valley took its first lead of the contest. Sichak and the Tigers responded just about a minute later when the senior fed a pass to sophomore Charlie Jones for the tying goal. NA went on to score three more in a row from sophomore Evan Wade, junior Mason Brown and a hat-trick marker from Neiport. Castillo scored his second of the game, sandwiched in between two late Seneca goals, and the Tigers held an 8-6 edge at the half.
The Raiders tied the game once again to begin the second half, but NA responded. Brown scored his second of the game, followed by the second goal from Wade, assisted by Sichak. Seneca Valley added one last goal before the quarter came to a close, and North Allegheny led 10-9 after three frames.
The Tigers added three insurance markers in the fourth quarter. Castillo netted the hat trick, assisted by senior Colt Gibson. Sichak found the back of the net for the first time this season, and Wade scored a hat trick, assisted by Neiport, who also had a ground ball in the game.
Senior Alex Costa stood strong in net with a 14-save performance. Freshman Cian Gallagher had 10 faceoff wins.
With the win, North Allegheny improves to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in section play. The Tigers have a final tune-up at Newman Stadium against Norwin Saturday afternoon before the WPIAL Playoffs.

Tigers Clipped In MSLA Final

The North Allegheny boys’ lacrosse team faced St. Edward (OH) in the MLSA “C” Bracket Final on Saturday morning. The Tigers played tough, but ultimately fell 5-4 at Western Reserve Academy.
St. Edward scored the opening goal of the contest, but NA responded at the end of the first quarter on a goal from sophomore Charlie Jones, assisted by senior Johnny Castillo. Jones opened up the second period with a goal assisted by sophomore Evan Wade to give the Tigers the lead. Junior Mason Brown added a goal from senior Colt Gibson before St. Edward scored late in the half. NA led 3-2 after two quarters.
Gibson connected with Brown for his second of the contest in the early stages of the second half to take a 4-2 lead, but that would be the last offense from NA, as St. Edward added two goals in the third to tie the game and took the lead for good at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
Senior captain Ryan Palmer had two ground balls and three takeaways. Along with Brown’s goals, he also had two ground balls and a takeaway.
Senior Alex Costa made six saves in the net.
North Allegheny takes on Seneca Valley in Harmony on Tuesday night at 7:30 for the final section match of the regular season. NA also plays Norwin at home for a tune-up before the postseason, Saturday, May 9th.

Tigers Open Up MSLA Tournament With Win

The North Allegheny boys’ lacrosse team traveled to Western Reserve Academy in Ohio on Friday for the first round of the MLSA “C” Bracket Tournament. NA took down the University School 8-4 in the contest.
After trailing by a goal early, North Allegheny scored four goals in a row over two quarters to take the lead at the half. Freshman Brandt Hoffman scored the first goal for the tigers with just under three minutes left in the opening stanza, assisted by sophomore Sawyer Catchen. With 12 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, senior Johnny Castillo put the Tigers ahead for the first time in the game.
NA opened the second period with two more tallies from sophomore Evan Wade, assisted by fellow sophomore Charlie Jones, and Junior Mason Brown unassisted. The Tigers led 4-2 at the half.
University School scored early in the third quarter to bring the game within a goal, but North Allegheny answered back four more in a row. Wade scored his second of the game, followed by the second goals for both Castillo and Brown. Catchen added his first goal of the game with just under seven minutes to play in the final frame.
Along with his two goals, Brown had six ground balls and one takeaway. Castillo had the two goals along with three takeaways and a ground ball. Senior Ian Boal had two ground balls and two takeaways. Freshman FOGO Nick Cook secured six faceoff wins, while sophomore Tyson Knapp registered five.
Sophomore Sam Walters earned the win in the net with seven total saves.
North Allegheny advances to play St. Edward (OH) in the “C” Bracket final on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. from Western Reserve Academy.

Tigers Take Down Indians

North Allegheny boys’ lacrosse hit the road to face North Hills on Thursday evening. The Tigers came home with a 15-4 win.
Sophomore Evan Wade paced NA with a five-goal performance. Freshman Brandt Hoffman netted a hat trick, while senior Johnny Castillo had a pair of goals.
Other goal scorers for the Tigers included junior Mason Brown, sophomore Charlie Jones, senior Jack Dimond, freshman Cian Gallagher and sophomore Sawyer Catchen.
Sophomore Sam Walters and senior Alex Costa each recorded a save, while freshman Conner Eich had two saves.
North Allegheny has a quick turnaround with the MSLA Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Western Reserve Academy. NA takes on the University School on Friday at 6:30 p.m to begin play.
