Late Lead Slips Away At Spire Academy

The North Allegheny boys’ lacrosse team traveled to Geneva, Ohio, on Tuesday night and dropped a narrow 8-7 decision to Spire Academy Academy in a non-section fray. The Tigers led 7-5 with 4:15 remaining in the fourth quarter before three unanswered goals lifted Spire Academy to a stunning win. The game-winning goal for Spire came with just 55 seconds left in regulation.

It was a great start for the Tigers, who built a 4-1 lead by the early stages of the second quarter. After an initial goal by Spire Academy, North Allegheny answered with a goal by junior Sam Porter to knot the score at 1-1 with 6:18 on the first quarter clock. In the final minute of the period, senior Evan Lyon netted back-to-back goals just 27 seconds apart to vault the Tigers in front, 3-1. Junior Colman Craft and Porter assisted on the two goals by Lyon.

With 11:29 to go in the second period, sophomore Jonathan Castillo increased the Tigers lead to 4-1. After Spire Academy trimmed the NA lead to 4-2 with 6:49 on the clock, the Tigers regained momentum with a goal by sophomore Nicholas Sichak with only 10 seconds left in the first half for a 5-2 advantage. Along with his last second goal in the first half, Sichak helped facilitate the offense with three assists. Sophomore Colt Gibson assisted on Sichak’s final goal of the half.

In the third period, Spire Academy cut the NA lead to 5-3 with 9:34 on the clock before Lyon answered back at the 7:34 mark with his third goal of the night, increasing the Tigers lead back to three goals, 6-3. That was the high water mark for North Allegheny, however, as Spire Academy began to chip away. Back-to-back goals cut the Tigers lead to 6-5 with 6:15 remaining in the fourth quarter. It appeared the pendulum swung back toward NA after a goal by Porter with 4:15 left in the game made it 7-5, Tigers. Unfortunately, three unanswered goals in the waning minutes, including the game winner with 55 seconds remaining, allowed host Spire Academy to sneak away with an 8-7 victory.

Junior defenseman Jacob Burns had a strong game on the back end with a team-high four ground balls and one takeaway. In net, junior goalie Logan Lyle made 11 saves.

With the loss, North Allegheny falls to 0-2 on the young season. The Tigers will host Mt. Lebanon for another tough non-section test on Monday at 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
