North Allegheny Cruises Past Armstrong in WPIAL First Round
by: Bob Orkwis
The Tigers took the opening kickoff and got a great scoring opportunity from Averie Bierker 15 seconds into the match. That shot did not connect, but it was a sign of things to come in the WPIAL 4A Girls Soccer First Round matchup, as North Allegheny put on a dominating performance in a 7-0 win over Armstrong at Newman Stadium.
Bierker’s next chance did find the net, as she took a feed from Kieran Shannon from the left wing and chipped the ball home for her 4th goal of the year and a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute.
Two minutes later, it was Shannon again distributing from the left flank, this time to Rosalia Varlotta who netted her 10th goal of the year for a 2-0 lead.
North Allegheny had all of the corner kicks on the night, and they capitalized in the 15th minute of play, This time it was Shannon near the right post with a header that found the foot of senior Maddie Williams for her first career goal and a 3-0 lead.

The Tigers made it 4-0 in the 21st minute when Mwende Abai took a pass from Mallory Lanasa and finished for her 5th goal of the year.
Jordan Beemer, who started in goal for North Allegheny and shared the shutout with Kayla Schwerin, made the only save for the Tigers on the night when she stopped the Riverhawks leading goal scorer Callie Adkins from the right wing.
North Allegheny added three more markers in the second half.
After being a facilitator in the first forty minutes, Shannon scored her team leading 15th goal on a clean run from the left side.
Bierker added her second of the night cashing in on a through ball down the left channel.
Junior Bella Montgomery converted a great feed from Addison Vrabel for her 9th goal in the 72nd minute to make the final score 7-0.
With the win, 5th seeded North Allegheny improved to (14-3-2) and the Tigers posted their 12th clean sheet of the year.
Armstrong, (7-11-1) was making its first ever playoff appearance as the 4th place team from 4A Section 1.
With a goal and three assists, and the ball seemingly at her feet the entire time she was on the pitch, junior Kieran Shannon was awarded the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.
Up next for North Allegheny is a familiar foe in the quarterfinals, 4th seeded Pine-Richland. The Rams, who finished just ahead of the Tigers in 4A Section 3, had one of the four first round byes. There was not much separation between the teams in their two regular season meetings in September. They played to a 0-0 draw in Wexford. Then Pine-Richland converted a late penalty kick from Emme Kline in the second half for a 1-0 victory at home. Thursday’s playoff match will kick off at a time to be determined and will be carried on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
