Rams Edge Tigers In WPIAL Quarterfinals
By: Jared Barton
For the third time in as many years, the North Allegheny boys’ lacrosse team hosted section rival Pine-Richland in the WPIAL Quarterfinals from Newman Stadium. The 4/5 matchup was projected to be a close game, and it lived up to the hype and intensity, with the Rams coming out victoriously with an 8-7 score. This was the first postseason win for PR in those three years.
North Allegheny got the ball rolling in the opening minutes on a goal from junior Mason Brown. Pine-Richland clapped back with two goals to end the first quarter from Jackson Reba and Callan DeGrands. PR led 2-1 heading to the second quarter.
The Rams added two more goals at the beginning of the second frame from Nate Komoroski and DeGrands, putting PR up 4-1. NA responded with a bouncing goal from senior Johnny Castillo and a Charlie Jones marker assisted by Castillo. Drew Sharp added a late goal for the Rams, who led 5-3 at the half.
In the third, North Allegheny’s leading scorer, sophomore Evan Wade, notched a goal on the doorstep after accepting a pass from senior Colt Gibson to bring the score to 5-4. Pine added three more markers to secure the lead. Nick Jones scored before AJ Guiffre tallied a goal on the man-up advantage. DeGrands scored his hat-trick marker with 5:10 remaining in the third, putting PR up 8-4.
NA added three goals late in the game, with senior Nick Sichak scoring on the man-up opportunity. Brown also scored his second of the game, while freshman Brandt Hoffman added a goal with five minutes remaining, assisted by Castillo. Hoffman’s extra effort through the match earned him Wright Automotive Player of the Game.
Mason Brown played well, adding three groundballs and a caused turnover. Freshman Nick Cook held his own at faceoff “X” with six wins. Both senior Alex Costa and sophomore Sam Walters made plays in the game. Costa took the loss and finished with five saves. Walters had four stops.
Congratulations to the Tigers for another great season!
