The North Allegheny girls’ soccer team earned another section victory on Wednesday, topping Butler 3-0 at Newman Stadium. The win solidifies the hold on second place in a very competitive section.

The Tiger offense dominated the first half of play, but the Golden Tornado defense limited the amount of NA chances inside the box.

North Allegheny sophomore Kieran Shannon scored back-to-back markers in the second half’s early stages. The first goal came in the 44th minute when Shannon took a shot inside the box that deflected off the Butler goalkeeper back to Shannon, who tapped in the rebound. In the 54th minute, Shannon sprinted into the offensive zone and beat the Golden Tornado back line to put the insurance marker in the back of the net. She earned Wright Automotive Player of the Game honors for her performance in the game.

Fellow sophomore Rosalia Varlotta added the final goal in the 55th minute on a pinpoint shot from roughly 20 yards out. It was Varlotta’s first career varsity goal.

Senior goalkeeper Maggie Nestor only had to make a couple of saves in the contest and earned the shutout in net.

North Allegheny improves to 9-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 in section play. The Tigers are back in action Monday night at home for an exhibition against Allderdice. That match will be broadcast on the North Allegheny Sports Network at 6:00 p.m.
