by: Jared Barton
After another run to WPIAL Gold and PIAA appearance, seven North Allegheny girls’ volleyball players were named Big 56 All-Section selections this season. Head Coach Russ Hoburg was also named Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his tenure.
Players earning first-team laurels include seniors Macey Casten and Bridgit Murphy along with sophomores Alicia Mokube and Molly Robertson. Second team players include senior Mackenzie Jones along with juniors Keely McMahon-Regan and Reagan Riordan.
Casten has been a huge part of the North Allegheny back line all season. Murphy is a IUP commit. Mokube is one of the best players in the section at the net while Robertson was second team All-WPIAL and section last year as a freshman.
Jones was named to the All-WPIAL third team in 2023. McMahon-Regan is coming off a 21 assist performance in the PIAA First Round while Riordan is a multi-sport athlete who was also second team all-section in girls’ lacrosse last spring, leading the team with 50 goals.
Hoburg was recently named 2023 PVCA State Coach of Year. That award is based upon a coaches’ impact on players as well as the success of the girls volleyball program for the 2023-2024 season. He has been the Big 56 Coach of the Year each of the four seasons he has been head coach. In that brief time, he holds an 80-4 overall record with three WPIAL championships and three state titles.
