Stingy Defense Helps NA To 6th Shutout, 3-0 Win At Butler

Posted on:

Playing on the slick grass at Butler on Wednesday night, the newly crowned Section 1-AAAA champion North Allegheny Tigers maintained their unblemished section record with a 3-0 shutout of the Golden Tornado. Goalie Madison Vukas made a pair of saves as the Tigers notched their sixth shutout of the season. The victory was NA’s sixth in a row.

Vukas and the Tigers defense performed well in the first half, keeping the game scoreless until the Tigers broke through for the game’s first goal in the 37th minute. Senior Emma Bundy scored on an excellent shot from the right side for a 1-0 lead.

The Tornado led the Tigers in corner kicks, 4-1, but could not cash in as North Allegheny maintained its one-goal advantage for most of the game before pulling away late in the second half. In the 74th minute, junior Sarah Shupansky lofted a high arcing shot that was just beyond the reach of the Butler goalie for a 2-0 North Allegheny lead. Schupansky put the game on ice five minutes later with a goal on a penalty kick for an insurmountable 3-0 lead and victory.

The win improves to North Allegheny’s overall record to 13-1-1 and section mark to 11-0 on the campaign. Butler dips to 11-4 overall and 7-4 in Section 1-AAAA. The Tigers will face another tough test on Thursday night with a road game against the first-place team in Section 3, the Norwin Knights.
