Tigers Clinch Section Title With 8-0 Win Over Dragons

The North Allegheny girls’ soccer team locked up the Section 1-4A crown on Wednesday night with an 8-0 victory over Allderdice at Newman Stadium. It’s the third consecutive section title for the Lady Tigers and fourth in the last five seasons.

Coming off a thrilling win against Fox Chapel earlier in the week, North Allegheny continued to ride that wave of momentum against Allderdice and broke the ice in the 7th minute on a goal by senior Abigail Stager, assisted by senior Sam Braden, for a 1-0 lead.

Already short-handed due to injury and playing with a back-up goalkeeper, the Dragons lost one of their top defenders, Ellia Neiss when she was struck in the head by a North Allegheny shot. With Neiss no longer in the contest, the Tigers took advantage of the Allderdice defense and struck for three goals in a seven-minute span late in the half. With 12:20 on the click, senior Gracie Strzempek scored to open up a 2-0 lead. Just over five minutes later, sophomore Emma Schupansky tickled the twine for a 3-0 advantage. With 5:23 left in the half, senior Ally Ruiz fed a pass in front that was headed in by Stager for her second of the night and 27th of the season, and the Tigers’ lead swelled to 4-0.

The Tigers continued to pour it on in the second half and cruised to victory. Early in the half, senior Jadyn Coy scored back-to-back goals to grow the lead to 6-0. On the first of Coy’s goals, with 33:11 to play, Schupansky inserted a corner kick and Braden fed a pass in front to Coy who buried a shot for a goal. Coy’s second goal of the night, and 11th of the season, was assisted by Rowan Barsotti with 30:47 remaining in regulation.

Gracie Strzempek celebrates one of her two goals with her teammates.

With 7:09 left in the game, junior Isabella Costa laced a shot that struck the left post and was corralled by hustling Kieran Shannon on the rebound. Dribbling the ball close to the end line, Shannon sent a pass to Strzempek who spun past a defender and let loose a shot from 12-yards out that hit the top right corner of the net for a 7-0 lead. The goal was Strzempek’s second of the evening and fourth on the season, helping her earn Wright Automotive Player of the Game honors.

Shannon capped the scoring with 5:00 remaining by drilling a line drive shot past Allderdice keeper Esme Offner to finish off an 8-0 win. The goal was Shannon’s 12th of the campaign

North Allegheny goalies Natalie Rak and Margaret Nestor were untested for much of the night but combined for the 11th shutout of the season for the Tigers.

With the win, the Tigers improve to 16-0 overall and 13-0 in Section 1-4A. Allderdice slips to 4-10 overall and 3-10 in section play. NA will round out the section schedule on Monday night with a visit to Seneca Valley. The game will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
