In an early-season section clash between two teams riding a wave of momentum, the North Allegheny girls’ soccer team and Pine-Richland Rams played to a scoreless draw on Monday night at Newman Stadium. The Tigers entered the contest on a six-game unbeaten streak, and the Rams had won six in a row to begin the 2025 season.

With each team boasting stingy defenses, the contest showcased a physical style of play that was apropos of the neighborhood rivalry between the Tigers and Rams. In the first half, the best scoring chance belonged to junior Rosalia Varlotta, who struck the crossbar on a shot from 25 yards out.

The field was tilted in North Allegheny’s direction for most of the night, and three scoring chances in the second half for NA’s leading scorer, junior Kieran Shannon, each narrowly missed giving NA the lead. The last of which was a strong one-timer attempt from 20 yards out that was denied on an outstanding diving save by Pine-Richland goalie and Naval Academy commit, Shea Best.

NA led in corner kicks, 12-2, and outshot the Rams, 6-3, on the night. However, Pine-Richland nearly stole the game in overtime when a point-blank shot was put toward the net out of a scramble in front. Senior Ava Hutter turned away the Rams with a defensive save to keep the game scoreless and force a second overtime. For her strong defense throughout the night, Hutter was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

In the waning minutes of the second extra session, a high-arching shot from Pine-Richland freshman Kendall Hughey nearly dropped into the back of the net, but NA junior goalie Jordan Beemer made a terrific leaping save to ultimately send the game to a 0-0 final.

The shutout was North Allegheny’s sixth in a row. Pine-Richland secured its fifth shutout on the young season. The Tigers sit at 5-1-2 following the draw and 1-0-1 in Section 3-AAAA. The Rams are 6-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in section play. NA will host Allderdice on Wednesday night for a non-section game that will be broadcast live by the North Allegheny Sports Network.
