Tigers Stomp Indians En Route To Section Victory
By: Jared Barton
The North Allegheny girls’ soccer program took care of business once again at Newman Stadium on senior night with an 8-0 win over North Hills Wednesday. This is now the 17th win in a row against the Indians for the Tigers, who have outscored North Hills 77-0 in the last 10 meetings.
NA’s offense and defense were smothering, not allowing North Hills a shot on goal and minimal offensive zone time throughout the entire game.
The Tigers cracked the scoresheet in the 10th minute of the contest on a goal from junior Rosalia Varlotta, who took a turning shot 15 yards away from the net after receiving the ball from seniors Averie Bierker and Avery Ruffus. About 15 minutes later, junior Meghan Dutkovich scored on a rifled shot from 30 yards out after an Emma Schupansky corner kick was cleared toward midfield. Junior Kieran Shannon tallied back-to-back markers to end the half, the first off a clean lead pass as she danced around the North Hill netminder for an easy tap-in and the on a chip shot nine yards out at a wide angle.
Ruffus opened the second half scoring off a big rebound from an initial Luciana Zagacki drive. Junior Addison Vrabel scored her first of the year while Varlotta added her second of the night in the middle stages of the frame. Junior Bella Montgomery found twine in the waning minutes.
Junior keeper Jordan Beemer earned the clean sheet in the net. Ruffus was named Wright Automotive Player of the Game for her efforts.
North Allegheny improves to 8-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in section play. The Tigers have a quick turnaround with a marquee matchup Thursday evening from Newman Stadium as they play host to top-ranked Peters Township at 5:00 p.m. That game is a part of a girl-boy doubleheader, with the boys’ squad taking on North Hills for their Senior Night at 7:45 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on the North Allegheny Sports Network.
