The North Allegheny boys’ volleyball team opened Section 2-AAA action on Thursday night with a 3-0 sweep over the Butler Golden Tornado at UPMC Court. The Tigers prevailed by set scores of 25-20, 25-23, 25-21.

The night got off to an inauspicious start for the Tigers, who trailed 8-2 before a timeout by head coach Dan Long changed the complexion of the match. The trio of sophomore middle blocker Peter Bratich, junior outside hitter Eli Braun and sophomore outside hitter Will Robertson authored a North Allegheny comeback and a 25-20 victory. The 6-6 Bratich used his length in the middle for three blocks in the set on his way to a team-high eight blocks to go along with seven kills on the evening. Braun tallied three of his eight kills in the set and Robertson was just getting warmed up.

In set two, senior Jeremiah Satcho continued NA’s dominance in the middle with three quick points and Braun added five more kills to help build a 22-16 lead. However, this time it was Butler who rallied behind three kills from St. John Fisher commit Coleton Welter to trim the NA lead to 24-23. The Tigers regained their composure despite the GT’s comeback bid and finished the set the same way they started, with a kill by Satcho to pull out a 25-23 win. Satcho finished the night with nine kills for the Tigers.

North Allegheny stormed out of the gates in set three and constructed a 14-7 lead before the serves of Welter sparked a 7-0 run for Butler to knot the score at 14-14. The Tigers brushed off the swing of momentum and surged forward for a 25-21 triumph spearheaded by the big swings of Robertson. The sophomore led the offense with a team-leading 13 kills, tallying seven in the final set. Adding three blocks and a team-best three aces, Robertson was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Match.

Senior setters Nicolas Carioto and Ryan Quatman facilitated the offense with 19 and 18 assists, respectively.  On defense, senior libero Will Hahn led with 16 digs, followed by Carioto with seven digs.

With the win, North Allegheny sits at 1-0 overall and in section play. Butler falls to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the section. The Tigers will look to stay sharp on Saturday at the Derry Invitational beginning at 8:30 p.m.
