TIGERS TAKE DOWN TITANS IN SECTION PLAY
by Dave Floyd
North Allegheny scored the first two points of Thursday’s home match and never trailed, defeating Section 2-AAA foe Shaler, 3-0. The state’s top-ranked team posted the victory by set scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-14, meaning NA has still yet to drop a set in dual-match competition this season.
With the victory, the Tigers upped their overall record to 8-0 and their section record to 7-0.
NA never led by more than five—an advantage they had just once—in the first set, but it used a balanced attack to keep the Titans at bay, as at least four players notched two or more kills. Then, in the second and third sets, NA jumped out to 7-1 leads and never looked back.
Junior Canyon Tuman paced the Tigers offensively, tallying team-high totals of 12 kills and six aces. Senior Seth Russell tacked on eight kills, as did classmate Eric Visgitis, whose hitting percentage was a perfect 100 percent. Visgitis also tied for the team lead with four block assists and for his all-around effort, earned the honor of Wright Automotive Player of the Game.
Senior MJ Barton turned in a solid performance, as well, racking up team highs in both assists (23) and digs (8).
The Tigers are next in action on Saturday when they head east to take part in the York Invitational. That tournament gets underway at 8:30 a.m.
JV Update: NA won 2-0 (25-13, 25-15).
