Tigers Upended By Panthers in Double OT, 15-14

In a rematch of last year’s WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinal, the North Allegheny boys’ lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker in the season opener on Friday night, 15-14, in double overtime at Upper St. Clair. Junior Holden Rickel netted the game-winning goal, his fifth of the night, to lift the host Panthers to the win.

The game got off to a promising start as the Tigers constructed a 9-7 lead by halftime and also held an 11-10 advantage after three quarters. A strong finish by the Panthers in the fourth quarter and in overtime proved to be the difference in the contest.

Despite the loss, there were numerous outstanding efforts by North Allegheny, including a pair of five-goal performances from senior Evan Lyon and sophomore Nicholas Sichak. Lyon and Sichak added three ground balls apiece.

Also touching the scoresheet for the Tigers was junior Sam Porter, sophomore Jonathan Castillo, and seniors Adam Flavell and Nick Palone. Castillo added three ground balls and a defensive takeaway, while Porter helped facilitate the offense with three assists.

Sophomore FOGO Luke Rohan won nine faceoffs, while junior goalie Logan Lyle made nine saves for the Tigers.

North Allegheny will look to bounce back following its opening night loss with a non-section visit to Spire Academy (OH) on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
