The North Allegheny girls’ soccer team headed to the South Side of Pittsburgh to take on section rival Seneca Valley for the 4A WPIAL Championship Friday night from Highmark Stadium. It took double overtime, but the Tigers came out on top with a 2-1 victory, claiming the fourth district championship in school history.

NA dominated the first half in the offensive zone, as the Tigers maintained 60% of the possession total throughout the contest. North Allegheny thought they scored the opening marker of the game from an Emma Schupansky corner kick with 27 minutes left in the half that was headed into the net by fellow senior Averie Bierker, but the marker was waved off by the officials due to a foul.

In the second half, junior Kieran Shannon had a great chance inside with 30 minutes to go in regulation, but the shot hit the crossbar and post, and the ball stayed out of the net.

Seneca Valley struck first with just 13 minutes remaining in regulation. Senior Maddie Marcotte found a tip in front of the NA net following a play from Karly Majeski to put the Raiders ahead.

North Allegheny responded five minutes later off a Schupansky corner kick. Shannon found the ball in traffic and lofted a shot diagonally towards the back left corner of the net to tie the match with her 16th goal of the season. Avery Ruffus and Schupansky were credited with the assists.

The game-winner came with 10:42 remaining in the second overtime. Junior Rosalia Varlotta stole a loose ball and took a turning shot from distance that found the back of the net over the Raider goalkeeper, who had an arm extended, but could not find the ball. The goal was Varlotta’s 12th of the season.

Senior Jordan Beemer was credited with two saves in the win. Varlotta was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game for her overall effort and game-winning marker.
