The Tigers were defeated by the North Hills Indians, 35-14, at Martorelli
Stadium on Friday night in the last Quad North game this season. After
the Indians had built a 21-0 halftime lead, the Tigers struck for
touchdowns by junior halfback Andrew McMillen and junior QB Andrew
Krewatch in the third quarter to cut the lead to 28-14. A fourth quarter
TD by senior halfback Andrew Johnson put the game away for North Hills. Johnson carried the ball 19 times for 150 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Indians.

After the Tigers were unable to move the ball on the first series,
Krewatch punted to senior Chris Kappas who returned the ball to the NA 49. Three running plays picked up a first down, but senior DB Chris Huber intercepted a Ryan Lehmeier pass at the NA 14 to end the threat. Once again, NA could not move the ball. After a five-yard motion penalty, McMillen got one, Krewatch six, and a pass to McMillen picked up four more but was short of a first down. Krewatch punted again to Kappas who brought it back to the Tiger 43. After Johnson gained five on two runs, a short swing pass to Kappas lost three and North Hills had to punt. The snap sailed over senior punter Chris Ebbert’s head, but Ebbert made a great play to get the kick off to senior Mike Petrasek, who returned the ball only to the NA 18. Once again, the NH defense held as senior halfback Dan Bartos gained 8 yards in 3 rushes. Krewatch got off a good punt forcing Kappas back to his 39 where he brought the ball out to the NH 43. On the first play, Johnson took off around the right side and outran the Tiger defenders for a 57-yard run and the first score of the game. Ebbert kicked the point, and North Hills had a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, the Tigers again had trouble moving the ball. On third down, Krewatch found sophomore WR Billy Knight for an 11-yard gain but the play missed a first down by a yard. After Krewatch’s punt was returned to the NH 35 by Kappas, the Indians went on a 65-yard scoring drive to open a two-touchdown lead. On second down, Johnson picked up 13 and a first down to the NH 48. After two plays gained only three yards, Lehmeier found Johnson open for a 21-yard gain to the NA 28. Johnson gained six, Kappas three, and Johnson six more for another first down at the NA 14. Kappas then took the ball around the left side and into the end zone for the score. Ebbert again added the point and it was a 14-0 NH lead.

After the ensuing kickoff, the NA offense continued to have problems.
After Bartos got five, Krewatch lost three, and an incomplete pass forced another Krewatch punt. Kappas made a fair catch at the NH 46. After senior LB Josh Zunic sacked Lehmeier for a ten-yard loss, two running plays gained only three yards, and Ebbert was forced to punt. Petrasek was driven back to his 13 where he went down after catching the ball. Three running plays gained only seven yards, and Krewatch once again had to kick it away. Kappas dropped the ball but recovered at the NH 47 with 59 seconds left in the half. After Johnson ran for six, a pass to Kappas gave NH a first down at the NA 40. After two penalties against the Indians pushed NH back, Lehmeier ran to left side after finding no receivers open. The Indian sophomore made it only to the NA 40, but a face mask penalty against the Tigers gave NH a first down at the 25. Lehmeier dropped a back and lofted a perfect pass to Kappas in the end zone as North Hills scored with only 11 seconds remaining in the half. Ebbert’s kick was good, and the Indians went to the intermission with a 21-0 advantage.

The Tigers came out strong in the third quarter. After the NA defense
forced an Ebbert punt, the Tigers took over at their own 34. On first
down, Bartos was hit in the backfield for a six-yard loss. After McMillan
gained four, Krewatch found senior Chris Rogers open across the middle, and the NA tight end rambled all the way to the North Hills 14-yard line, a gain of 54 yards and the first Tiger first down of the game. After Bartos gained four, an incomplete pass brought up a third down at the NH 10. McMillan blasted his way into the end zone off the right side, and NA was on the board. Senior Lee House added the point, and it looked like NA was back in the game as they cut the lead to 21-7. That changed quickly, however, as Johnson took the kickoff, ran up the middle, cut to his left, and raced 88 yards to answer for the Indians. Once again, Ebbert was perfect on the conversion and the score went to 28-7. On the ensuing kickoff, McMillen returned the ball 26 yards to the NA 36. McMillen picked up nine and Bartos five more for a first down at midfield. McMillen then gained eleven more on two plays to give the Tigers a first and ten at the NH 39. After two plays picked up only two yards, Krewatch hit Huber for a gain of ten and another first down at the 27. At this point, it was McMillen time as the Tiger halfback gained 10, 9 and 7 to give the Tigers a first and goal at the one. Krewatch took it in for the score, completing a 64-yard drive against one of the premier defenses in the WPIAL. House added the point, and the Tigers once again had cut the lead to fourteen at 28-14.

On the ensuing kickoff, Johnson again broke loose. This time the Tigers caught him, but Johnson returned the ball to the NA 45 where Huber made a touchdown-saving tackle. Johnson gained ten and a first down to the NA 35 and then another ten to the 25 as the quarter ended.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, the Indians were called for
holding, pushing the ball back to the NA 45. After Johnson lost a yard,
Kappas gained five to the 32. A pass to Johnson picked up only three, and the Indians had a fourth and fourteen. With fourth and long, Lehmeier lifted a high, floating pass that Kappas was able to catch at the NA 13 for a first down. On the first down play, Johnson broke through the middle to score and effectively put the game away. Ebbert’s fifth straight extra point made it 35-14 with 9:46 remaining. The Tigers could not move the ball after the kickoff and Krewatch punted out of bounds at the NA 42. Three plays gained 9 ½ yards. On fourth down, Lehmeier kept the ball but was hit hard by Zunic and had to leave the game. Coach Jack McCurry sent in his second team offense and the Tigers held at the Tiger 32. Four plays picked up only four yards and the Tigers turned it over to NH at the NA 36. Once again, the North Hills second team offense was unable to score, although they did pick up one first down. The Tigers stopped the Indians at the NA 20 with only five seconds left. NA took a knee and North Hills had a big 35-14 victory.

A dominating first-half performance by North Hills made it tough for the
Tigers to come back. NA mounted a strong rally in the third quarter to
get back in the game, but in the end, it was too much Johnson and too much North Hills defense. The win improved the North Hills conference record to 4-2, good for third place and a playoff spot. The overall Indian mark went to 7-2 on the season. It was the second straight win for North
Hills against NA and pushed the all-time series record to 23-21 in favor
of the Indians.

For the Tigers, it was another disappointment as the NA conference record dropped to 1-5 and the overall mark to 2-7. For his efforts during the two long scoring drives, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Andrew McMillen as the Player of the Game. The Tigers will play Norwin on Friday night at Newman Stadium in a 7:30 pmcontest as the season comes to an end. The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet. Be sure to join Don Vandergrift and Jordan Dee for all the action, live or archived.
