TIGERS DEFEAT SEWICKLEY ACADEMY, 2-0, AT SOCCERFEST 2004

The Tigers broke out of their scoreless streak with a pair of goals in a 2-0 victory over Sewickley Academy at Newman Stadium on Saturday night.  Senior defender Steve Hucko and junior forward Justin Runkel scored for the Tigers who ended a four-game winless streak.

The Tigers controlled much of the first half but did not score until the waning seconds.  With 10 seconds left, NA got a corner kick.  Sophomore defender Chet Gapczynski quickly put the ball into play and Hucko headed into the net with just two seconds remaining.

The momentum carried over to the second half as the Tigers controlled much of the action.  NA was able to score again in the 50th minute when Hucko crossed the ball into the penalty area, and Runkel drove a low hard shot into the corner of the goal.  The Tiger defense made the 2-0 advantage hold up for the remainder of the game.

The Tigers looked impressive with crisp passing, good ball control and a solid defense.  Coach Bruno Schwarz said, "This was our overall best team performance of the year.  Our defense was solid, our midfield controlled the play, and our offense was able to hold the ball in the attacking 1/3 of the field, thereby creating scoring opportunities."

The win improved the NA overall record to 3-4-1.  The Tigers will be back in action again tomorrow night when they host Shaler in a section contest at Newman Stadium.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

SENECA VALLEY BLANKS TIGERS, 2-0

The Seneca Valley Raiders shut out the Tigers, 2-0, on Thursday night at Seneca in a Section 2 contest.  The Tigers played a hard, physical SV team and came up a little short.  NA put themselves in a hole early in the game when they failed to clear the ball from the 5 yard box, and it trickled into the net.  The fluke goal was the only score of the half as the Raiders took a 1-0 advantage to the intermission.

In the second half, Seneca Valley's Tyler Smith was left alone on a deflection, and he converted with a shot into the far corner.  Trailing 2-0, the Tigers mounted numerous attacks but could not score.  According to Coach Schwarz, "We did not play badly.  It was a valiant effort.  We showed a very competitive spirit and were equal to our opponent."  Coach Schwarz added, "It is tough to win when you can't score.  We must continue to work on finishing."

The loss dropped the NA section record to 1-3, the overall mark to 2-4-1.  The Tigers will host Seneca Valley tomorrow night in a non-section contest as part of SoccerFest 2004.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm at Newman Stadium.

#2 HAMPTON DROPS NA, 4-0

The Hampton Talbots, ranked #2 by the Tribune-Review, shut out the Tigers, 4-0, at Hampton on Tuesday night.  Sean Regan scored the first goal in the 10th minute as Hampton jumped off to a 1-0 lead.  The Talbot defense was able to hold off NA as Hampton to a 1-0 advantage to the intermission

Trailing by a goal, the Tigers tried desperately to get back in the game in the early moments of the second half.  In the 45th minute, sophomore forward Kevin Kearney hit the post, but the ball was cleared off the line by a Hampton defender.  In the 50th minute, Jedd Cordesco, Hampton's leading scorer and an all-WPIAL selection last year, was able to put the Talbots ahead by two when he broke through the NA defense.  The goal seemed to deflate the Tigers, and Hampton added two more goals in the next seven minutes to put the game out of reach.

The loss dropped the NA section record to 1-2, the overall mark to 2-3-1.  Head coach Bruno Schwarz commented, "Hampton is a very good team that is playing with great confidence right now and were the better team tonight.  We need to regroup and concentrate on Seneca."  The Tigers will travel to Seneca Valley tomorrow night to meet the Raiders in a 7:30 pm section contest.

NA, AMBRIDGE PLAY 0-0 TIE

Coach Bruno Schwarz's Tigers traveled to Ambridge on Saturday night and came home with a scoreless tie.  During the game, NA looked composed and played well.  The Tigers established good ball possession in the back and in the midfield, but were never dangerous in the attacking 1/3 of the field.

The Ambridge defense played well in shutting down the NA attack.  The Tigers did have their chances, however, as they had eight corners but could not score.  In the closing minutes of regulation, NA had three great opportunities to score but were denied.  One ball was cleared off the line by Ambridge at the last second.  In the overtime period, both teams looked for the "golden goal" but had to settle for the 0-0 tie.

According to Coach Schwarz, "I think it was a moral victory for Ambridge but a disappointing result for us, considering all the ball possession we had.  Our goal was to come away with a victory."  With the tie, the NA record stands at 2-2-1 on the season.   On Tuesday night, the Tigers will jump back into section play when they travel to Hampton to meet the Talbots.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

PINE RICHLAND BLANKS TIGERS, 3-0

The Pine Richland Rams scored three first half goals and held off the Tigers for a 3-0 section victory at Pine Richland Stadium on Thursday afternoon.  All three goals came on corner kicks within a 15 minute time span.  The Rams' speed and quickness did not allow the Tigers to establish any kind of possession in the first half.

The Tigers played better in the second half but never really threatened.  According to Coach Bruno Schwarz, "It was a very disappointing performance.  We simply could not find our rhythm today."  The loss dropped the NA section record to 1-1, the overall mark to 2-2.  The Tigers will travel to Ambridge tomorrow night for a non-section contest with the Bridgers.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

TIGERS DOWN BUTLER, 3-1, IN SECTION OPENER

The Tigers traveled to Butler on Tuesday night and came home with a 3-1 victory in the section opener.  NA defeated a very hard aggressive and attack-minded Butler team to open section play on a winning note.  Butler controlled much of the 1st half with their high pressure and fast pace, but the Tigers weathered the storm ant slowly adjusted to the pressure.  The Tornado had an opportunity to go ahead in the 10th minute when they hit the post.  NA came back in the 12th minute but senior defender Steve Hucko hit the post on a header.

In the 35th minute, the Tigers took the lead when the Butler GK came out to clear the ball; the ball landed at Hucko's feet, and he capitalized with a shot from 35 yards out into the empty net.  The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

Butler opened the second half once again playing a flat 4 and employing the offside trap.  In the opening minute, the Tigers capitalized when they beat the offside trap as junior forward Justin Runkel slid the ball through the defense, and sophomore forward Kevin Kearney beat the goalkeeper who had come out too quickly.  Butler came back to score when Ben Horner scored on a penalty kick in the 20th minute to cut the NA lead to 2-1.

Butler continued to play the offside trap and once again it was costly.  Senior forward Brad Lutz sprung Runkel loose with a give and go, and Runkel dribbled around the goalkeeper to give NA a commanding 3-1 advantage.  The Tigers made the lead stand up and picked up the victory.  According to NA Head Coach Bruno Schwarz, "It was a solid performance by the Tigers".

The win gave NA a 1-0 mark in section play, 2-1 overall.  The Tigers will be back in action again tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Pine-Richland for a section contest.  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.

TIGERS SPLIT OPENING NON-SECTION GAMES

Coach Bruno Schwarz's Tigers won one and lost one on the opening weekend of soccer season for the Tigers.  On Friday, #2 ranked Peters Township downed NA, 2-0, at Marshall Middle School.  On Saturday afternoon, an overtime goal gave the Tigers a 2-1 victory over Gateway for their first win.

In the opener,  forward Eric Floyd scored on a pass from Justin Kovac from 18 yards out in the 28th minute to give the Indians a 1-0 advantage.  In the second half, after the Tigers could not capitalize on two great opportunities, Peters Township scored on a counter attack with Garrett McLean finishing in the 30th minute to increase the lead to 2-0 and secure the victory.  According to Coach Schwarz, "it was a well played match with both teams creating good scoring opportunities."

On Saturday afternoon in the sweltering of Newman Stadium, the Tigers outlasted Gateway for the 2-1 overtime victory.  Junior Kevin Kearney gave NA a 1-0 lead on a beautiful side volley from a cross from junior Elliot Burdwood in the 23rd minute.  The Tigers took a 1-0 advantage into the second half.

Gateway was able to equalize on a penalty kick by Brandan Fischetti in the 20th minute.  The Tigers had numerous opportunities to win in regulation time but were denied by senior Gateway GK Mike Bordogna who made some big saves in one on one situations.  In overtime, NA scored quickly as junior forward Justin Runkel took a pass from senior Eddie Flaherty and "blistered a hard shot into the corner of the net" at the 1:39 mark to give the Tigers their first victory of the season.

The Tigers will open section play tonight when they travel to Butler to meet the Golden Tornado.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
