McDOWELL EDGES LADY TIGERS, 3-1, IN PIAA FIRST ROUND

A goal by junior Melissa Kuhar with just three seconds remaining in the first half proved to be the difference as McDowell defeated the Lady Tigers, 3-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Harbor Creek High School.  Senior Stephanie Maloney had tied the game at 1-1 with 4:42 remaining in the half.  A second half insurance goal put the game away for the Trojans.

The Lady Tigers came out strong and controlled play for much of the first half.  Midway through the half, however, Leah Oleski was able to head a pass from Kuhar that beat NA senior GK Leann Kania to put the Trojans ahead, 1-0.  The Tiger pressure paid off later in the half when Maloney was able to get the equalizer with 4:42 remaining.  Kuhar's goal with just 3.6 seconds left on the clock was a killer for NA.  Coach Chet Gapczynski commented, "That goal with three seconds left just killed us."

In the second half, McDowell played with more confidence with the lead.  With 11:36 remaining in the half, Julie Zielinski was to pick up an insurance goal to make it a 3-1 lead.  The Lady Tigers were unable to come back, and McDowell moved on the the quarterfinals against Norwin with the victory.

The Lady Tigers finished with an overall record of 15-5-2 on the season that included the first NA playoff appearance since 1998.  NA advanced to the WPIAL semifinals before losing a highly-contested 2-1 contest to eventual WPIAL champion Moon.

CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH GAPCZYNSKI AND THE LADY TIGERS FOR A GREAT SEASON!!!!

MOON EDGES NA, 2-1, IN WPIAL SEMIFINALS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

A goal by sophomore Megan Mischler with 16:18 remaining in the second half proved to be the game winner as the Moon Tigers defeated the Lady Tigers, 2-1, at Shaler on Wednesday night.  Junior Jordan Gapczynski scored on a penalty kick near the end of the first half to tie the game at 1-1.

Moon began with early pressure on the NA goal with Mischler sending a direct kick from 25 yards wide of the Tiger goal.  Senior GK Leann Kania made a good save on sophomore Katie Michalski at the 29:02 mark to keep the game scoreless.  The Lady Tiger defense, led by senior Kelly Connelly and sophomore Kelly Langhans, was able to stymie the speed of the Moon Tigers in the early going.  With 14:30 remaining, however, Michalski got loose on the right side and beat Kania with a shot into the upper left hand corner to give Moon a 1-0 lead.  Senior MF Laura Steidel came back minutes later to get two shots away, but both were blocked by the Moon defense.  Sophomore Kathleen Caggiano had a chance at the 13:21 mark but her shot went high and wide.  Late in the half, sophomore Leigh Cullen made a clever move in the box and was dragged down by sophomore defender Kyra Hricik giving NA a penalty kick.  Gapczynski blasted the ball past Moon GK April Hunsberger to tie the game with 3:32 remaining.  Neither team was able to score in the last minutes,  and the teams went to the intermission tied at 1-1.

In the second half, the Lady Tigers came out with pressure at the beginning of the half but were unable to get any good scoring opportunities.  Moon came back later in the half when senior Jen Chew's header was saved by Kania at the 21:50 mark.  The Tigers had a great chance to take the lead with 17:18 left when Gapczynski drove a hard shot on a direct kick that Hunsberger saved.  The rebound came loose but NA could not beat the Moon keeper.  Just one minute later, Mischler got away for one of the few times in the game and lifted a high shot over the head of Kania from 25 yards out to give Moon the 2-1 advantage.  NA picked up a red card with 11:48 left and had to play one player short for the remainder of the game.  Even with the disadvantage, the Lady Tigers got a chance at the equalizer at the 9:58 mark.  Gapczynski had another direct kick from 30 yards.  This time, the Tiger junior passed the ball to junior forward Jackie Givens who one-timed it to NA senior forward Stephanie Maloney, but her shot from in front of the net went just wide to the right.  Moon was able to play out the remaining minutes and earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

The Lady Tigers controlled the ball for much of the game with a well-organized short passing attack.  The Moon defense, however, was able to keep the Tigers from getting many good scoring opportunities with Hricik playing strong in the middle of the Moon defense.  The NA defense countered the Moon speed with close marking and good decisions defensively for most of the game giving the Lady Tigers a chance for victory.  For her play, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Jordan Gapczynski as the Player of the Game.

The loss dropped the Lady Tigers from the WPIAL playoffs, but the Lady Tigers have qualified for the PIAA playoffs that begin next week.  NA now has a record of 15-4-2 as they get ready for the state tournament.

HEMPFIELD FALLS TO LADY TIGERS, 3-1,  IN WPIAL QUARTERFINALS

The Lady Tigers struck quickly for two first half goals and went on to defeat the Hempfield Spartans, 3-1, at Deer Lakes on Saturday afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the WPIAL tournament.  Senior Stephanie Maloney and sophomores Leigh Cullen and Jackie Givens scored goals to pace NA to the victory.

Midway through the first half, Maloney put the Lady Tigers ahead when she scored on a header from eight yards on a well-placed corner kick by senior MF Laura Steidel.  With ten minutes remaining in the half, Cullen took a nice feed from senior MF Lauren Sarnowski and dribbled straight down the middle of the field for about 20 yards.  The Tiger sophomore then hammered a shot from about 25 yards into the upper left side of the net to give NA a 2-0 advantage.  Neither team scored in the remaining time and the Lady Tigers took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Early in the second half, Hempfield cut the lead in half with a goal on a semi breakaway.  With the score at 2-1, the Lady Tigers regrouped and regained the momentum.  Givens took a pass from Cullen right in front of the charging Hempfield goalkeeper.  She then sidestepped the keeper and deposited the ball into the vacated net for an important insurance goal that gave NA a 3-1 lead.  The Tiger defense and senior GK Leann Kania were able to keep the Spartans off the board for the remainder of the game as the Lady Tigers moved on to the semifinals with a 3-1 win.

The win improved the NA record to 15-3-2 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will meet the Moon Tigers (17-1-2), a 5-0 victor over Franklin Regional.  Moon is ranked #1 by the Post-Gazette and MSA Sports.  The game will be played at the Shaler soccer field on Wednesday night with game time set for 6:00 pm.

LADY TIGERS SHOCK PENN-TRAFFORD, 3-0, IN FIRST ROUND OF WPIAL PLAYOFFS

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Coach Chet Gapczynski's Lady Tigers upset the Penn-Trafford Warriors, 3-0, at Warrior Stadium in Harrison City on Monday night.  Seniors Laura Steidel and Lisa Sarnowski, along with junior MF Jordan Gapczynski, scored first-half goals as NA knocked the defending WPIAL champions from the playoffs.

The Lady Tigers took control early in the first half.  Senior MF Lauren Sarnowski headed a ball forward that Steidel put into the net with a high shot over the head of sophomore GK Kim Barker just 4:35 into the game.  NA continued to pressure the Warrior goal as senior forward Stephanie Maloney had two good scoring opportunities.  In the ninth minute, Barker made a diving save to keep the score at 1-0, and, less than two minutes later, Maloney shot just wide to the left of the Warrior goal.  The pressure paid off a minute later as the Lady Tigers were able to convert on a corner kick.  Gapczynski lifted the ball high to the far post where Lisa Sarnowski was able to settle the ball in front of the goal and then beat Barker to make it a 2-0 NA lead at the 27:35 mark.  In the 25th minute, sophomore Leigh Cullen sent a through ball to junior forward Mollie Rosenzweig but her attempt from 15 yards went over the goal.  Five minutes later, Gapczynski scored the goal of the game.  After picking up the ball just inside Warrior territory, the Tiger junior beat the only P-T defender and raced 45 yards with sophomore Jackie Givens on her right.  Gapczynski was able to beat Barker cleanly and NA opened a commanding 3-0 lead.  Late in the first half, junior Melinda Lieb had a good chance from just inside the 18, but her shot sailed over the NA goal.  At the 2:05 mark, Leib got free again right in front of the Tiger goal, but senior GK Leann Kania made a diving save and then fell on the ball to stop any further scoring attempt.  The Tigers took a 3-0 lead to the intermission.

Penn-Trafford came out strong early in the second half and came close to scoring.  Junior forward Caitlin Borden had a chance from 25 yards but her shot went wide.  The Lady Tiger defense then took over, led by sophomore Kelly Langhans and senior Kelly Connolly.  The defense continually broke up Warrior passes and would not allow P-T to get any real scoring chances.  On offense, NA did not push forward often but Gapczynski had an opportunity at the 17:45 mark, but Barker made a diving save.

With time running out, all-WPIAL midfielder Jen Lyman sent a perfect pass to a wide open Caitlin Borden in front of the NA net, but Borden saw the ball roll off the edge of her foot and go wide.  It was the last chance for the defending champions, but the night belong to the Lady Tigers who came home with a well-earned 3-0 victory.

The Lady Tigers recorded 7 corner kicks to just one for Penn-Trafford, a further indication that NA controlled play.  It was a team effort, particularly on defense, as the Lady Tigers would not allow the Warriors any space with their close marking.  For her efforts both offensively and defensively, the North Allegheny selected Laura Steidel as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the NA record improved to 14-3-2 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will play Hempfield, an upset 1-0 winner over Upper St. Clair.  The game will be played at Deer Lakes High School on Saturday afternoon beginning at 2:00 pm

LADY TIGERS BLAST ELIZABETH FORWARD OUT OF PLAYOFFS, 4-0

The Lady Tigers scored four first-half goals and held off Elizabeth Forward as they defeated the Warriors, 4-0, at Elizabeth Forward on Friday afternoon.  Senior MF Laura Steidel scored a pair of goals while senior forward Stephanie Maloney and junior midfielder Jordan Gapczynski scored a goal each.  Senior goalkeeper Leann Kania earned the shutout.

In the first half, Steidel opened the scoring fifteen minutes into the game when she tucked in a shot off the far post on a cross from junior forward Mollie Rosenzweig.  Maloney followed with a one-timed left-footed strike from a good through ball from senior MF Lauren Sarnowski.  Gapczynski made it 3-0 with a great individual effort.  After taking a pass from senior Jessie Eckert, the Tiger junior turned around one defender, beat a second defensive player, and hit a shot from the outside of her right foot to the far post netting.  Steidel closed out the scoring when she scored on a rebound of Maloney's blast off the crossbar.  The Tigers took a 4-0 lead to the intermission.

The Lady Tiger defense kept the Warriors off the board in the second half, although Kania was forced to make several difficult saves to preserve the shutout.

With the win, NA will travel to Penn-Trafford for a first round meeting with the defending WPIAL champions.  NA enters the game with an overall record of 13-3-2 while the Warriors are 16-2 and enter the tournament as the co-champions of Section 1.  The game is scheduled for 6:00 pm tonight at Penn-Trafford  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 5:45 pm.

LADY TIGERS END REGULAR SEASON WITH 1-0 VICTORY OVER HAMPTON

The Lady Tigers concluded their regular season with a 1-0 non-section victory at Hampton on Friday night.  Junior Jordan Gapczynski got the game winner as senior goalkeeper Leean Kania and the NA defense kept a good Hampton team off the scoreboard.

With about five minutes left in the first half, Gapczynski launched a smashing shot into the upper left hand corner from 18 yards out with what would be the only goal of the game.  Sophomore Leigh Cullen set up the play with a perfect pass that split the Hampton defense.

In the second half, both teams had chances but did not score.  With ten minutes left in the game, the Lady Tigers came close to making it a 2-0 game.  Sophomore Jackie Givens fed sophomore forward Kellie Cope on a two on one break, but her left-footed one-timer richocheted off the left post.  The Tiger defense held the Talbots the rest of the way and NA had a 1-0 victory.  Kania shared the shutout with sophomore Morgan Campbell who played 15 minutes at the end of the first half.

The win improved the final regular season record to 12-3-2.  NA awaits their first round playoff opponent with the Tournament Scheduling meeting scheduled for Wednesday.  The North Allegheny Sports Network plans to be there to broadcast the playoff game LIVE on the internet.  Stay tuned --- we will post the playoff schedule as soon as we get it!

JV UPDATE: Earlier at Marshall, the JV lost a whirlwind game to a talented Hampton JV team by a 4-3 score.  Coach Weet had never before seen such a back and forth game in his whole JV coaching career, but as a small consolation for the loss hoped that the fans at least enjoyed it.  The NA goals were scored by Leigh Wiker, Renee Polakovic, and Morgan Campbell, assisted by Lanie Smith, Kellie Cope and Chrissie Marshall, respectively.  The girls finished the JV season with a commendable 10-3-1 record.  Every girl on the team made their share of contributions to success. CULLEN'S REBOUND PUTS LADY TIGERS IN PLAYOFFS, 2-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

It was Senior Night but sophomore Leigh Cullen's header on a rebound halfway through the second overtime period gave the Lady Tigers a 2-1 victory over North Hills on a rainy Wednesday night at Newman Stadium as NA qualified for the WPIAL Playoffs.  Senior Jessie Eckert had run the left side and placed a hard shot that was stopped by NH goalkeeper Katie Muller, but Cullen was there for the carom.  NA dominated play for most of the game but needed extra time to pick up the crucial victory.

In the first half, the Lady Tigers came out strong.  Just over three minutes into the game, senior MF Grace Chao got off a hard shot from 15 yards but Muller made the catch.  Less than a minute later, senior forward Mary Dubois shot wide right.  In the seventh, senior Tricia Patsilevas skipped a long shot off the wet turf but Muller was there again.  North Hills came back to threaten at the 21:54 mark, but senior GK Leann Kania stopped sophomore Diana Harrison from in front of the NA goal.  A little over a minute later, junior MF Jordan Gapczynski broke free along the right baseline, but her pass was behind a breaking Cullen.  North Hills was able to take a 1-0 lead with 14:15 remaining in the half when freshman Kasey Arena, who was just inserted into the game, lofted a high shot that caught the NA defenders and Kania breaking forward.  The ball floated into the right corner as the Indians stunned NA with the first goal of the game.

The Lady Tigers had a great opportunity to tie the game in the 29th minute.  Sophomore Kelly Langhans broke free around the left side and crossed the ball toward Gapczynski.  The ball, Gapczynski and Muller all got there the same time causing both players to go down and the ball to roll free.  Cullen had the first chance but her shot was blocked, and senior midfielder Lauren Sarnowski tried a second time with the shot also blocked by the NH defense.  Muller had to leave the game for several minutes with her place being taken by sophomore field player Shannon Seiler.  The Indians were able to clear the attempted shot off the corner kick to keep the game scoreless.  The Tigers kept up the pressure with sophomore Jackie Givens shot stopped by Muller with 10:09 left.  North Hills had a chance when freshman Lindsey Steinsdorfer let a shot go from the far side but Kania came up with a diving save to keep the game at 1-0.

After Cullen shot wide from 20 yards out at the 2:54 mark, Lauren Sarnowski got the equalizer with a turning shot into the left corner from 16 yards away.  Neither team could score again and the teams went to the intermission with the score tied at 1-1.

In the second half, North Allegheny continued to pressure the Indians but were unable to finish.  In the seventh minute, Dubois blasted a hard shot that Muller saved but could not stop as the ball rolled toward the NH goal.  Freshman Caitlin Cahill kept the game tied by kicking the ball off the line at the last second.  Dubois broke in again less than a minute later, but her shot went wide.  North Hills was able to get a corner kick, only their second of the game, and it took a good play by Kania to keep the game tied, as she punched the ball away from in front of the goal.  With 23:15 left in regulation, sophomore Kellie Cope had a chance but her shot went wide to the right.  With a little over 12 minutes left in the second half, junior Mollie Rosenzweig broke down the left and forced Muller to make a diving save.  Junior Sarah Janosik was there for the rebound, but her shot hit the right post and the game remained tied at 1-1.  With less than five minutes remaining, NH defender Julie Banner launched a direct kick from 25 yards that Kania had to go high to deflect.  Janosik had another opportunity with 3:09 left but again the shot was wide.  Neither team threatened again and the game went to overtime.

In the first overtime period, the Lady Tigers dominated but North Hills was able to keep NA from getting good scoring chances.  Chao had the best opportunity but her volley off a corner kick went wide.  The second overtime was much of the same for the first half of the period.  With just over five minutes left, Gapczynski made a good move to get free at midfield.  The Tiger junior sent a long ball down the left side that Eckert was able to catch in full stride.  Eckert got the shot off, Cullen put in the rebound, and the Lady Tigers had won, 2-1, to qualify for the playoffs.  For her game winning goal, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Leigh Cullen as the Player of the Game.

It was a dominating performance by the Lady Tigers in ball control and territorial advantage.  The North Hills defense and freshman keeper Muller, however, were able to frustrate NA for most of the night until Cullen's game winner.  The Lady Tigers recorded ten corner kicks to two for NH, another indication of the NA control.  With the win, the Lady Tigers finish with a final section record of 7-3-2, an overall mark of 11-3-2.  There are several playoff scenarios based on the score of the Seneca Valley at Butler game tonight, but in each one, NA qualifies for the playoffs.  The Lady Tigers will finish the regular season with a non-section road contest at Hampton on Friday night with a 7:30 pm start time.

JV NOTES:  The JV poured it on North Hills in the rain last evening by a 6-0 score.  Lanie Smith directed the attack with a 3-goal hat trick.  Maura Romano had a goal and two assists.  Other goal scorers were Kellie Cope and Sarah Janosik.  Other assists went to Jourdan Spence with 2, Emily Rosenzweig and Melia Muckle.

GAPCZYNSKI'S PENALTY KICK GIVES LADY TIGERS 2-1 WIN OVER FOX CHAPEL

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Junior midfielder Jordan Gapczynski scored on a penalty kick with 5:30 remaining in the second overtime period to give the Lady Tigers a crucial 2-1 win over Fox Chapel in the battle for a playoff spot in the WPIAL Playoffs.  After trailing 1-0 at halftime, sophomore MF Leigh Cullen tied the score ten minutes into the second half.

Fox Chapel exerted early pressure in the first half and it paid off.  Sophomore Adrianna Vega put the Foxes ahead, 1-0, when she beat NA senior goalkeeper Leann Kania with a shot high into the net.  It would be the only goal given up by Kania.  Less than a minute later, senior MF Laura Steidel came close to tying the game off a corner kick by senior Stephanie Maloney, but her attempt went over the goal  Senior defender Lauren Sarnowski had another chance a minute later, but she shot wide.  NA continued to control play giving Maloney another opportunity in the 18th minute, but her shot sailed wide left.

The Lady Tigers continued to pressure the Fox Chapel defense, and it resulted in several good scoring chances for Gapczynski.  The Tiger junior had one shot blocked after a corner kick, and another went high and wide from 17 yards out.  In the 28th minute, Gapczynski had a golden opportunity for the equalizer on a great pass from sophomore forward Mollie Rosenzweig, but her attempt rolled wide to the left of the goal.  The Foxes came close to opening a two-goal lead late in the period.   After Kania made a good save on senior Lindsay Miller, Vega put the rebound over the goal.  Neither team could score again, and the teams went to the intermission with Fox Chapel holding a 1-0 advantage.

The Foxes came out strong over the first ten minutes of the second half.  Kania made another good save on Vega in the seventh minute, and junior forward Molly Linhart missed wide left a minute later.  From this point on, the Lady Tigers took control of the game.  Sophomore goalkeeper Alicia Miksic made things interesting on several occasions when she came out of the box to clear the ball.  Gapczynski had two tries blocked by the defense, and another stopped by Miksic as the Foxes continued to hold the one-goal advantage.  Cullen finally got the equalizer at the 10:37 mark when she beat Miksic with a hard shot to the right corner from right in front of the goal.  With 11:57 remaining, Cullen had an opportunity to give NA the lead after the Foxes were called for an infraction in the penalty area.  The Tiger sophomore tried for the right corner on the penalty kick, but Miksic guessed correctly and made the save.  Less than 30 seconds later, Miksic came out too far again, but sophomore forward Jackie Givens could not find the open goal.  NA had one last chance with just 48 seconds left, but Maloney's header was saved by Miksic.  The game went to overtime with the teams tied at 1-1.

In the first overtime period, Fox Chapel had a chance on a corner kick midway through the period but senior MF Caroline Coulson put it wide.  NA had three opportunities in the last 3:51 but could not convert.  Givens and Rosenzweig both lifted shots over the goal, and Gapczynski was stopped from behind and had her attempt blocked wide of the goal with 2:35 remaining.

In the second overtime period, both teams became a little more cautious.  Finally, with 5:30 remaining, the Foxes were called for an infraction near the edge of the box, and NA was awarded their second penalty kick of the game.  Gapczynski made no mistake this time as she drilled the ball just inside the left post to give the Lady Tigers a well-deserved 2-1 victory.

It was a great team effort by the Lady Tigers who dominated play for most of the evening.  NA recorded six corner kicks to just one for Fox Chapel, one indication of the control that the Lady Tigers were able to maintain.  The win improved the NA record to 6-3-2 in section play, 10-3-2 overall, with just one section game remaining.  NA will have to defeat North Hills tomorrow night, but the playoff battle will come down to the last section game between Butler and Seneca Valley on Thursday night.

The Lady Tigers will host North Hills tomorrow night at Newman Stadium.  It will be Senior Night as all NA Seniors will be recognized and honored.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:30 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:45 pm.

JV NOTES: The JV Lady Tigers beat Fox Chapel by a 1-0 score.  The goal was scored midway through the first half on a semi-breakaway by Kellie Coope, assisted by Mollie Rosenzweig on a lead pass.  The defense of Brittany Antonucci, Melia Muckle, Emily Rosenzweig, Elise Strickler, and Emily Guzzetti stopped the Fox Chapel attack while keepers Danielle Mostachetti, Katie Mahoney, and Morgan Campbell shared another shutout, their 5th in a row.

LADY TIGERS EDGE PENN HILLS, 2-1, ON GAPCZYNSKI'S GOAL

Coach Chet Gapczynski's Lady Tigers traveled to Penn Hills on Friday and came home with a 2-1 victory over the Indians.  NA jumped off to an early lead when senior Lauren Sarnowski blasted the first goal from 20 yards out on an assist from senior MF Grace Chao just five minutes into the game.  The Indians came back, however, to tie the game, and the teams went to the intermission with the scored tied at 1-1.

Neither team could score early in the second half, but junior MF Jordan Gapczynski broke the tie with a smashing direct kick from 25 yards out with just under ten minutes remaining in regulation.  The Tiger defense held off Penn Hills for the remainder of the game to earn a 2-1 victory.

The win improved the NA overall record to 9-3-2 on the season as they got ready for tonight's showdown with Fox Chapel.  The Tigers will host the Foxes in a battle for a playoff position in Section 2.  Both teams are 5-3-2 in section play.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 5:30 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 5:45 in the first game of a soccer doubleheader at Newman Stadium.

JV NOTES: The JV team won by a 6-0 score on the strength of goals by Maura Romano (2), Kellie Cope, Leigh Wiker, Sarah Janosik and Renee Polakovic along with assists from Morgan Campbell, Mollie Rosenzweig, Brittany Antonucci, Elise Strickler, and Cope.

LADY TIGERS BEAT BUTLER, 1-0, TO JUMP BACK INTO PLAYOFF RACE

The Lady Tigers traveled to Butler on Wednesday night and came home with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Tornado.  Junior midfielder Jordan Gapczynski's goal midway through the second half was the game winner.  The Tiger defense held off Butler the remainder of the game with senior goalkeeper Leann Kania making some stellar saves in picking up the shutout.

The winning game came when senior MF Laura Steidel broke free down the right wing and crossed the ball to hard charging senior MF Mary Dubois.  The Butler goalkeeper and Dubois collided with both falling to the ground.  The ball squirted free to Gapczynski who, according to assistant coach Bryan Weet, "deposited it emphatically into the goal!"  After being shaken up, both Dubois and the Butler netminder were okay.

The central midfield of senior Lauren Sarnowski, sophomore Leigh Cullen, and seniors Grace Chao and Tricia Patsilevas, had a very strong game.  They were able to possess the ball, control the tempo, and play balls through to the forwards.

The win improved the NA section record to 5-3-2, the overall mark to 8-3-2.  The win moved NA back into the playoff picture.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Penn Hills tomorrow night for a 7:30 pm non-section contest.

JV UPDATE:  The JV responded to an earlier 2-0 loss to Butler with a dominant performance for a 1-0 win that did not reflect the overall edge in play.  Mollie Rosenzweig scored the goal in the first half on an assist from Melanie Versaw.  Keepers Danielle Mostachetti, Morgan Campbell, and Katie Maloney were forced to make some important saves in the shutout.

PINE-RICHLAND EDGES LADY TIGERS, 1-0, IN DEFENSIVE CONTEST

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Lady Tigers gave a great defensive effort against first-place Pine-Richland on Monday night but dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the Rams.  Sophomore Megan Klingenberg scored the game's only goal late in the first half.  NA had scoring chances but could not convert against the Rams.

In the first half, the Lady Tigers had the first scoring opportunity but sophomore MF Leigh Cullen's rebound attempt went wide.  The Rams came back to pressure the NA goal in the 26th minute, but senior GK Leann Kania was able to cover up in the middle of a big scramble for the ball.  With 8:45 remaining, junior midfielder Jordan Gapczynski broke free along the goal line but her attempt was stopped by Ram goalkeeper Kelly Slingwine.  Five minutes later, Gapczynski broke free in the penalty area and appeared to be tripped but no call was forthcoming and the game remained scoreless.  Less than a minute later, Klingenberg made a great individual effort to score.  The PR sophomore took the ball about 25 yards from the goal, dribbled past a defender and laid the ball off to her right.  Klingenberg then broke to the goal, took the return pass, and beat Kania from right in front of the goal.  Senior forward Stephanie Maloney had a chance from 20 yards away with 22 seconds remaining but Slingwine made the save.

In the second half, the Rams came out strong pressuring the NA goal.  In the 15th minute, sophomore forward Jordan Baranowski had a great chance in front of the NA goal, but Kania made a diving save to keep the Lady Tigers in the game.  In the 18th minute, senior Lauren Sarnowski had a chance but her shot went wide.  The Tigers began to pressure the Ram defense with 15 minutes left.  Good passing put NA in position to score, but the close marking of the Ram defense preventing any good scoring opportunities.  With 8:19 left, Gapczynski and sophomore forward Jackie Givens worked a give and go but the attempted shot rolled wide to the left.  Two minutes later, sophomore defender Kelly Langhans came back to stop a Ram breakaway as PR tried to pick up an insurance goal.  Senior Kylie Miller was stopped by Kania with help from senior defender Kelly Connelly at the 5:32 mark to give NA another chance to tie.  With a little over a minute to play, Gapczynski attempted a long shot just outside the box but Slingwine was able to make the save.  NA was unable to threaten in the final minute, and the Rams gained a measure of revenge with a 1-0 victory.

The Lady Tigers were outstanding on defense for most of the evening.  Unfortunately for NA, one breakdown allowed the Rams' leading scorer to get free.  For their efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected midfielder Leigh Cullen and defender Kelly Langhans as Co-Players of the Game.  The loss dropped the NA section record to 4-3-2, the overall mark to 7-3-2 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will be on the road tomorrow night when they travel to Butler to meet the Tornado in an important Section 2 contest.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

The Tiger defensive effort was led by seniors Kelly Connelly and Lisa Sarnowski, along with sophomore Kelly Langhans.  Connelly was able to break up several scoring opportunities while senior GK Leann Kania was stellar in goal, making several sprawling saves to preserve the shutout.

The Lady Tigers will host Pine-Richland on Monday night as part of an NA soccer doubleheader.  Because of Open House at the Senior High on Tuesday, the boys' game has been moved to Monday at 6:15 pm.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will broadcast both games LIVE on the internet.  The Lady Tigers' game has been moved back to an 8:00 pm starting time.

LADY TIGERS, SHALER PLAY TO 1-1 TIE

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Senior Stephanie Maloney scored the tying goal midway through the first half as NA and Shaler battled to a 1-1 tie at Newman Stadium on Monday night in a Section 2 contest.  The teams played on even terms throughout most of the evening, with Shaler having a 3-2 edge on corner kicks.

In the first half, freshman forward Erin Fitzpatrick had the first scoring chance of the game, but senior defender Kelly Connelly blocked her attempt with 31:30 remaining in the half.  Maloney had a good chance six minutes later when she took a good serve from sophomore forward Jackie Givens, but her shot went over the goal.  Shaler broke through in the 20th minute when senior Rachael Schmitz lofted a high shot over the head of NA goalkeeper Leanne Kania to give the Titans a 1-0 advantage.  The Tigers came back to equalize four minutes later on a great individual effort by Maloney. Givens lofted a high ball in the box that GK Lisa Bartolowicz tried to reach.  Maloney was able to beat the Shaler keeper to the ball, getting just enough of her left foot on the ball to roll it over the line and tie the game.  The goal was the fifth of the season for the senior forward.  Senior midfielder Mary Dubois had an opportunity with 8:45 left in the half, but her turning shot was caught by Bartolowicz.  The teams went to the intermission tied at 1-1.

Both teams had opportunities to score in the second half.  Just 2:20 into the half, Dubois shot just wide from 30 yards.  In the 31st minute, Shaler senior forward Kelsey Anderson had a great opportunity to put the Titans in the lead off a scramble in front of the NA goal, but her shot sailed wide to the right.  Six minutes later,  Givens one timed a corner kick from Gapczynski but her attempt was blocked by the Shaler defense.  Thirty seconds later, senior MF Lauren Sarnowski had her half volley go wide.  Anderson stayed active for the Titans with two opportunities.  With 22:17 left, a shot from 25 yards went wide, and her header missed the goal just thirty seconds later.  Sophomore midfielder Leigh Cullen had a chance in the 24th minute but was stopped by Bartolowicz. The Lady Tigers continued to apply pressure but could not score.  Gapczynski's shot from the right side was stopped by the Shaler keeper at the 12:37 mark, Givens had another shot blocked with 9:32 remaining, and Maloney had a chance for the game winner with 3:54 left but her attempt went wide.  Regulation time ended with the score tied at 1-1.

Neither team was able to score in the overtime periods with Givens' shot from 18 yards the best chance for NA.   The defenses held up as the Lady Tigers and the Titans had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

The Lady Tigers had periods where they applied good pressure on the Shaler goal, but Bartolowicz and the Shaler defenders were able to hold off NA.  The outside speed of Shaler made them a threat, but the NA defense, headed up by Connelly, senior Lisa Sarnowski and sophomore Kelly Langhans were able to close down the Shaler attempts at breakaways.  For her efforts on the night, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Stephanie Maloney as the Player of the Game.

The tie brings the NA record to 4-2-1, the overall mark to 7-2-1 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will travel to Seneca Valley tomorrow night to meet the Raiders in a 7:30 pm section game.

JV UPDATE: The JV avenged an earlier loss at Shaler by beating them 1-0 at home.  With 20 minutes left in regulation, Mollie Rosenzweig attacked the goal and scored on an assist from Melanie Versw.  The defense of Brittany Antonucci, Melia Muckle, Shannon Fusina, Elise Strickler, Emily Rosenzweig, Sarah Janosik and Chrissie Marshall held Shaler's attack at bay.  Goalkeepers Danielle Mostachetti, Morgan Campbell, and Katie Mahoney shared the shutout in goal, with Mahoney having to reach for a couple of touch saves toward the end of the game.

GIVENS' HAT TRICK LEADS LADY TIGERS OVER NORTH HILLS, 5-0

Sophomore Jackie Givens scored three goals as the Lady Tigers exploded for five goals in the second half on their way to a 5-0 victory over North Hills at Martorelli Stadium on Wednesday night.   Neither team could score in the first half as the teams went to the intermission in a scoreless tie.

Givens opened the scoring 14 minutes into the second half when she booted a 30-yard shot that looped over the outstretched arms of the North Hills keeper.  Junior Jordan Gapczynski, who assisted on the goal, promptly set up Givens for the second goal, a shot that she placed perfectly inside the far post from 15 yards out.  Later in the half, Givens found the same spot inside the far post for her third goal of the game as NA took a 3-0 lead.  With eight minutes remaining, senior Tricia Patsilevas scored on a one timer from 20 yards off a serve from senior Laura Steidel.  Senior Stephanie Maloney closed out the scoring with a left footed volley on a feed from Gapczynski, who picked up her third assist of the game.  Senior Leann Kania recorded the shutout as the Tigers brought home a 5-0 victory over the Indians.

The win ended a two-game losing streak and improved the NA section record to 4-2, the overall mark to 7-2.  The Lady Tigers will be on the road on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Plum to meet the Mustangs in a 12 noon non-section contest.

JV UPDATE: The JV scored early and often in an 8-0 win, with the first goal in each half coming within 50 seconds of the kickoff.  Kellie Cope led the parade with a hat trick. Goalkeeper/field player Morgan Campbell had a goal and 2 assists.  Jordan Spence and Maura Romano both had a goal and an assist.  Shannon Fusina and Lanie Smith also tallied.  Other helpers were provided by Mollie Rosenzweig with 2, Emily Rosenzweig, and Sarah Janosik.

FOX CHAPEL HANDS LADY TIGERS SECOND LOSS, 3-1

The Lady Tigers traveled to Fox Chapel on Monday night and were defeated by the Foxes, 3-1.  The loss was the second straight for NA after six wins to open the season.   The Lady Tigers got off to a slow start allowing two Fox Chapel goals, one from a corner kick.  NA came back, however, and began to take control of the play.  The hard work paid off with four minutes remaining when sophomore Leigh Cullen scored on a perfectly driven direct kick to the far post side paneling from 20 yards out.  Neither team scored again, and the teams went to the intermission with Fox Chapel holding a 2-1 advantage.

The Lady Tigers continued to dominate play for most of the second half but could not get the equalizer.  Fox Chapel put the game away with another goal from a corner kick with just a few minutes remaining.  Fox Chapel came away with a 3-1 victory.

The loss dropped NA to 3-2 in section play, 6-2 overall.  The Lady Tigers will travel to North Hills tomorrow for a 7:45 pm section match.

JV UPDATE: The JV prevailed in the opener by a 2-1 score.  Kellie Cope scored a first half goal on a semi-breakaway from Maura Romano's lead pass.  Emily Guzzetti provided the needed insurance goal from a defensive position with a 30 yard shot.  Fox Chapel responded with a late goal but would get no closer.

WPIAL GIRLS' SOCCER - 2004

The Lady Tigers will compete again in Class AAA, along with 54 other teams this year.  The top three (3) teams and ties will enter the WPIAL tournament.  All playoff entries will be determined by section record only and will be determined by the best section win/lost record.  Ties will be broken by the following method: two points for a win, one point for tie.  Minus points for losses will not be applied this year!  Teams that tie for first place will not have the tie broken and both will be declared co-champions and each will receive a section winner's plaque.  Those two teams will enter the tournament and the second place team will enter as the third place section representative.  In the event of a tie for second or third place, the tie breaker system will be employed.  If a tie persists, head to head competition will determine the qualifier.  In the event of a multiple tie the following tie breaker will be employed:

1.  Section records of the two teams will be compiled.
2.  The team that has the best numerical record among the tied teams will be the qualifier
3.  If the tie cannot be clearly broken, all tied teams will enter the tournament.

Teams that qualify for the tournament should be aware that they may be placed in a preliminary round and may be assigned to play the weekend prior to the first round of the tournament.

Each game will consist of two equal halves of 40 minutes each.  If a regular season game (exhibition or section) ends in a tie, two ten minute overtime periods will be played.  It a tie persists at that point, the game is over and is recorded as a tie.  In post-season play, the procedure to determine a game winner will be the state adopted method of the National Federation soccer rules book.

PIAA qualifier - the four (4) semi-finalist teams will advance to the state championship bracket on a follow-the-winner basis.

Players and coaches who receive hard red cards and are disqualified from any game by the game official will not be permitted to participate in the next scheduled game played by their team at the same level of competition.  Repeated red card offenders will be subjected to more severe penalties.
