BUTLER ENDS LADY TIGERS' UNBEATEN STREAK, 1-0

Defending champion Butler edged the Lady Tigers, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Newman Stadium.  Neither team mounted much of an offensive attack throughout the game although Butler did have the advantage in shots on goal.

After a scoreless first half, NA finally threatened with about five minutes remaining in the game when junior Sarah Janosik ripped a shot off the crossbar.  Butler got the game winner with two minutes left in regulation when the Tornado broke through the NA defense on a semi breakaway.

The loss ended the NA winning streak at six as the Lady Tigers' record fell to 3-1 in section, 6-1 overall.  NA will travel to Fox Chapel tonight night for a 7:30 pm section contest.

MALONEY'S GOAL IN OVERTIME BEATS PINE-RICHLAND, 2-1

The Lady Tigers came back for an impressive and thrilling 2-1 overtime victory at Pine-Richland on Wednesday night.  Senior forward Stephanie Maloney got the game winner in overtime.  The Rams were ranked #3 by the Tribune-Review going into the game, but the unbeaten Lady Tigers would not be denied.

After a tightly contested first half that saw neither team score, the Rams struck first with about 12 minutes left in regulation.  NA responded quickly, however, when sophomore defender Kelly Langhans connected on a 50-yard direct kick for the equalizer that sent the game into extra time.

In the overtime period, the Lady Tigers wasted little time in scoring the game winner.  Just minutes into the extra period, senior Jessie Eckert got loose down the left side and served a beautiful cross to a hard-charging Maloney who redirected a one-time volley into the top corner of the net.  NA came away with a hard earned 2-1 victory.

After scoring the "golden goal", the girls "then stormed the field to celebrate the victory" said assistant coach Brian Weet.  Credit goes to senior GK Leann Kania and the NA defense for holding the Rams to just one goal.  With the win, the NA section record improves to 3-0, the overall mark to 6-0 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will host the defending section champion Butler Golden Tornado tomorrow night as part of SoccerFest 2004.  Game time at Newman Stadium is set for 7:45 pm.

JV UPDATE: The NA JV's controlled play in their game, tying Pine-Richland, 1-1.  Shannon Fusina scored on a rebound of a Maura Romano's shot with about 10 minutes left in the game.  unfortunately, Pine-Richland spoiled the strong performance by scoring on a direct kick with 1:30 left in regulation.

LADY TIGERS EDGE SENECA VALLEY, 2-1, TO REMAIN UNBEATEN

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

A late goal by Mollie Rosenzweig proved to be the difference as the Lady Tigers held on for a 2-1 victory over Seneca Valley at Newman Stadium on Monday night.  Junior Jordan Gapczynski scored in the first half to give NA a 1-0 halftime lead.  Junior forward Cassandra Berlin scored the Seneca goal.

Seneca Valley came out strong early, but the Tigers were able to keep the Raiders from scoring.  A long shot from 35 yards by junior MF Ashley Rees bounced high over the NA goal and narrowly missed going in.  NA came back when senior Lisa Sarnowki sent a cross from the right side that Gapczyski collected.  The Tiger junior made several nice moves through the box and beat Seneca GK Ali Intihar with a shot to the right corner of the net.  NA had two additional opportunities later.  Senior Laura Steidel had a chance from 15 yards out but Intihar made the save.  Gapczynski came back later to blast a shot from just inside the penalty area but her attempt went wide to the left.  Sophomore Courtney Leon had a chance at the 18:12 mark but her attempt went over the goal.  NA went to the intermission with a 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, the Raiders exerted pressure from the opening whistle.  Good defense by seniors Kelly Connelly and Mary Dubois along with sophomore Kelly Langhans kept the Seneca attack from scoring.  Leon had a great chance to equalize at the 31:39 mark but her shot just missed the right corner.  Sophomore Leigh Cullen came back but shot just right of the goal at the 24:26 mark.  A  header by Rees was saved by senior GK Leann Kania with 21:39 left.  The Tigers finally picked up the insurance goal when Gapczynski broke loose down the right side.  Her cross came right in front of the Seneca goal.  Senior Stephanie Maloney had a chance but the ball bounced to Molly Rosenzweig who put it into the net for a 2-0 NA lead.  Berlin came back to score on a high shot over the head of Kania with 8:47 left, but the NA defense was able to hold the lead.  The Tigers came away with a hard-earned 2-1 victory.

Defense was key for the Lady Tigers throughout the game, but NA took advantage of scoring opportunities to score just enough to win.  For her efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Jordan Gapczynski as the Player of the Game.  The win improved the NA section record to 2-0, the overall mark to 5-0.  NA will return to action tomorrow night when they travel to Pine-Richland for a 7:30 pm section game.

JV UPDATE:  The Lady Tigers posted their first JV win versus Seneca Valley in two years by a 1-0 score.  Kellie Cope scored a first half goal on a volley in front off of Elise Strickler's corner kick.  The defense of Shannon Fusina, Sarah Janosik, Melia Muckle, Emily Rosenzweig, and Strickler made the goal hold up to preserve the win.

MALONEY'S GOAL GIVES LADY TIGERS 1-0 VICTORY IN SECTION OPENER

The unbeaten Lady Tigers edged Shaler, 1-0, in the section opener at Shaler on Saturday night.  Senior forward Stephanie Maloney scored the winning goal midway through the first half on "an absolutely gorgeous far post shot" according to assistant coach Brian Weet.  Sophomore Jackie Givens set up the goal with a "well-textured" through ball.

Shaler mounted a desperate attack to try to tie the game in the second half, but the NA defense came up big.  Seniors Lisa Sarnowski and Kelly Connelly, along with sophomore Kelly Langhans, were able to stymie Shaler and secure the victory.  Senior GK Leann Kania had a couple of stellar saves, including one from point blank range, to preserve the hard-fought shutout.

The win improved the overall NA record to 4-0 on the season.  The Lady Tigers will be at home tomorrow night when they host the Seneca Valley Raiders.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:30 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:45 pm.

LADY TIGERS SHUT OUT SCHENLEY, 3-0, IN RAIN

On a blustery, rainy night at Newman Stadium, the Lady Tigers extended their winning streak to three games with a 3-0 victory over City League Champion Schenley.  The remnants of Hurricane Francis were unable to stop junior MF Jordan Gapczynski who scored a pair of goals to lead NA.  Sophomore Jackie Givens set up Gapczynski for the first goal that gave NA a 1-0 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, Gapczynski scored again with senior Mary Dubois adding the clincher as the Tigers downed the four-time City League Champion by a 3-0 count.  The game was played in a torrential downpour, but the Lady Tigers did not allow the weather to keep them from their third straight victory.
