The Penn Hills Indians used the running of senior Ed Collington to defeat the Tigers, 28-7, at Newman Stadium on Friday night.  Collington gained 199 yards and scored three TDs in a game that was ended with 8:37 remaining in the third quarter.  Senior Bill Borlak scored the Tiger touchdown on a 12-yard run.

After sophomore Troy Hill was nailed on the opening kickoff at the Penn Hills 19 yard line, the Tiger defense stopped Collington for three yards on two plays with senior Joe Apel making a big hit on the second play.  On third down, Collington got loose for ten yards and a first down to the Penn Hills 33.  Senior QB Bryan Moore found senior WR David Harvey open in the left flat and Harvey raced 18 yards to the NA 45.  The NA defense then held with senior LB Ryan Rylands making a big play catching Harvey for a ten-yard loss on an attempted reverse.  Sophomore Joe Coyle punted to the NA 10 where the Tigers took over for their first possession.

The Tigers gained only four yards in three plays, and senior Andrew Krewatch was forced to punt.  After Krewatch’s punt went out of bounds at the NA 44, Penn Hills struck quickly.  On first down. Moore found Harvey deep and the Tigers were only able to force him out of bounds at the NA 13.  A pass to Harvey gained five, and Collington took it to the one on two plays.  A quarterback sneak by Moore scored the game’s first touchdown.  Senior Wade Wolowiec broke through the block the extra point and Penn Hills had a 6-0 lead at the 3:07 mark.

After a holding penalty on the ensuing kickoff moved the ball back to the NA 10, the Tigers started to move the ball.  On third down, senior Craig Howarth broke through for a 10-yard gain and a first down at the NA 25.  After Howarth got four on first down, Borlak raced for twenty yards and a first down at the NA 49.  After Moleton lost six on a broken play, the Tigers were unable to move.

Early in the second quarter,  Krewatch’s punt was tipped by Carlos Burns and was covered by the Indians at the Penn Hills 39.  Once again, the Tiger defense held and forced Penn Hills to punt to senior Kyle Allis who returned the ball two yards to the NA 27.  The Tigers started with a short pass to Borlak for two and a run by junior Bill Knight for four.  Howarth then broke through for a gain of 33 yards as Penn Hills finally caught him at the Indians’ 35.  On the play, Wolowiec went out with an injury and did not return.  On second down, it was Howarth again running for 15 yards as NA had a first down at the Penn Hills 18.  Borlak found a hole and picked up ten more and another first down at the Penn Hills 8.  The Tiger drive stalled here as a running play, a fumble and an incomplete pass forced the Tigers into a field goal try.  Senior Ryan Honsaker’s kick was low and Penn Hills took over at the 20.

On the first play, Collington broke through the left side, angled toward the sideline, and raced to the NA 16 before Howarth finally caught him.  Two plays later, Collington took it in from 4 yards out.  Penn Hills added a two-point conversion on a pass from Moore to Harvey who made a good catch in the right corner of the end zone.  After the kickoff, the Tigers were unable to move and Krewatch had to punt.  After Harvey returned the punt for 16 yards to the NA 39, Penn Hills needed five plays to score with Collington running the final seven.  Steve Nese’s kick made it 21-0.  After the kickoff went into the end zone, the Tigers took a knee twice as the half ended with Penn Hills holding a commanding 21-0 advantage.

In the third quarter, the Tigers came alive with their most impressive drive of the game.  After Borlak picked up six on first down, senior QB Andrew Krewatch hit senior Bob Polley on a long pass good for a 62-yard gain before the Indians brought him down from behind at the Penn Hills 12.  On the next play, Borlak went up the middle for 12 yards and the first NA touchdown of the season.  Honsaker’s kick was good as the Tigers cut the lead to 21-7.  Penn Hills went back to Collington after the kickoff.  The Tigers had no answer as the senior halfback picked up 11, 5 and 6 before breaking a 58-yard run for his third TD of the game.  Nese’s kick made it 28-7.  After the kickoff, the Tigers ran 2 plays before lightning was spotted.  After a delay of a little over an hour, the game was called with Penn Hills earning a 28-7 victory.

The Tigers stayed close for most of the first half.  The defense was able to contain the running game for the most part and NA trailed by only 6-0 with 5:29 remaining in the half.  The huge Penn Hills line began to take its toll at that point.  NA was outweighed by over 50 pounds per man as the Indians came in with a front five averaging 276 pounds.  The Tiger offense should some positive signs with the running of Howarth and Borlak.  Krewatch added a spark at the beginning of the second half with his long pass completion.  The North Allegheny Sports Network selected Craig Howarth as the Player of the Game.  With the loss, the NA non-section mark moved to 0-1 with #2 ranked Penn Hills going to 1-0.  The Tigers will be at home next Friday when they host the Norwin Knights.  Norwin was defeated by Bethel Park, 28-10, last night.   Last year, the Tigers downed Norwin, 35-0, in the season finale.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning at 7:15 pm with the pre-game show.  Game time is set for 7:30 pm at Newman Stadium.
