SIMMER'S FOUR GOALS LEAD NA OVER PETERS TOWNSHIP, 9-6

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

Junior attack Blaine Simmer scored four goals to pace the Tigers to a 9-6 victory over division rival Peters Township at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Junior attack Jason Faber added three goals as NA built a 4-0 lead after one quarter on their way to the victory.  Senior midfield Conor McGrann and junior midfield Brandon Hoskinson also scored goals for the winning Tigers.

Midway through the first quarter, Faber gave NA a 1-0 lead with a shot into the upper corner from in front of the goal.  Simmer made it 2-0 with a turning shot just 1:34 later.  On the play, Kevin Walcott of Peters Township was injured and play was halted for over twenty minutes.  When play resumed, the Tigers added two quick goals.  Hoskinson scored on a rebound at the 3:50 mark to increase the lead to 3-0, and Faber scored his second goal from a tough angle along the goal line with just 1:28 remaining in the period.  The Tigers took a 4-0 lead after one quarter of play.

Neither team could score in the early minutes of the second quarter, but NA dominated play.  With 3:55 remaining in the half, McGrann scored from twelve yards out converting on a pass from Simmer as the lead increased to 5-0.  Simmer's second goal at the 2:12 mark gave the Tigers a commanding 6-0 lead.  Ryan Welsh was able to put the Indians on the board before halftime when he scored with just 11 seconds left.  The Tigers took a 6-1 lead into the intermission.

Peters Township came out strong early in the third quarter, and it paid off when Barrett Hoskins scored at the 7:09 mark to cut the lead to 6-2.  Simmer answered with a pair of goals set up by Peters Township turnovers.  Simmer stole the ball and beat goalie Frank Cicero with 6:38 remaining to push the lead to 7-2.  The Tiger defense intercepted a clearing pass by Cicero and set up Simmer  in front of the net where the Tiger junior scored his fourth goal as the NA lead went to 8-2.  Tiger penalties helped the Indians near the end of the period when Hoskins scored on a two-man up advantage at the 2:03 mark.  The quarter ended with NA holding an 8-3 lead.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, another Tiger penalty allowed Hoskins to score a man-up goal to cut the margin to 8-4 just 12 seconds into the quarter.  Later in the quarter, junior attack Brian Territ set up Faber to the right of the net where he was able to score his third goal of the game to make it a 9-4 NA lead.  Tiger coach John Rullan was able to clear the bench as all Tiger players saw action down the stretch.  Peters Township scored a pair of goals late as Sean Paul Mauro and Jason Powell tallied for the Indians to cut the lead to 9-6 with just 1:33 left.  The Tigers kept control of the ball for the remaining time and came away with an important 9-6 division victory.

For his efforts, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected Blaine Simmer as the Player of the Game.  With the win, the Tigers improved their division record to 1-2, their overall mark to 5-5.  NA will host Shaler on Friday night and Seneca Valley on Saturday night at Newman Stadium.  The starting times for both games is scheduled for 8:00 pm.

TIGERS EDGE PINE-RICHLAND, 12-11, IN OVERTIME

After leading 8-4 in the second quarter, the Tigers saw Pine-Richland come back to take an 11-10 lead late in the game.  After the Tigers rallied to tie the game at 11-11 and send it into overtime, junior middie Andrew Stypula was able to put in a rebound with just 10 seconds remaining to give NA the victory.  It was an exciting game to kick off the home season at Newman Stadium.

In the overtime period, the Tigers controlled play for much of the time but were unable to score.  Pine-Richland had several attempts that went wide of the net before the Tigers were able to pull it out.  With time running out, junior attack Blaine Simmer hit the post in the closing seconds.  Stypula was able to pick up the loose ground ball and bury the game winner.

The young Tigers, with only one returning starter, are off to a good start in the early going winning their first three games.  NA will host Medina, Ohio, this afternoon at Newman Stadium.  Game time has been changed from 3:00 to 4:30 pm.
