STRONG SECOND HALF SINKS NORTH HILLS, 3-0

Senior midfielder J.P. Fulton scored twice and junior forward Shawn McCrory added another as the Tigers exploded for three goals in six minutes in the second half to defeat rival North Hills, 3-0, at Newman Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  After a scoreless first half, Fulton's first goal at the 11:02 mark ignited the Tiger offense on their way to the victory.   Junior GK Mike Severyn earned the shutout for the winning Tigers.

The Tigers almost scored early in the game as an NA corner kick was just missed by junior forward Dylan Flaherty in the first minute.  Three minutes later, senior midfielder Adam Sharpnack sent a long shot toward the NH goal that was stopped by GK Dave Gianella.  Senior forward Raphael Bretz took a long pass into the box at the 5:15 mark but could not get off a good shot.  North Hills' Jackson Getting sent a hard shot from 20 yards toward the NA goal less than a minute later but Severyn made the save.  At the 14:20 mark, NH Tyler Rothbauer gave the Indians a chance with a long throw into the box that NH could not convert.  A minute later, Bretz had a great chance when he blocked a NH clearing pass and the bouncing  ball was cleared off the NH line just before it went into the net.  At the 18:17 mark, Flaherty got around the defense and sent a ball along the goal line that was stopped by the NH keeper.  At the 19:06 mark, junior Israel Echeverria drove a hard shot from just inside the 18 that went over the goal.  Thirty seconds later, the Indians' Brandon Jackson sent in a shot from 30 yards that Severyn grabbed out of the air.  The Tigers turned up the offensive pressure over the next several minutes resulting in three consecutive corner kicks that were not converted.  Jackson got free on a breakaway with 13:50 remaining, but the NA defense caught up and forced an errant shot wide of the goal.  A little over a minute later, McCrory had a chance from in front of the Indian net, but his shot was blocked by the defense.  With 6:45 remaining, senior MF Evan Cullen set up junior Zach Jergan who drove a hard shot off the cross bar.  With 4:02 remaining, Echeverria sent a ball through the box that the Tigers could not play.  A minute later, Cullen drove another cross that past the Tiger players in the penalty area.  The Indians had one last opportunity when Ryan Grindle broke down the right side, but NA senior defender Peter Schweers was able to stop the scoring chance.  Although NA dominated play resulting in six corner kicks to just one for the Indians, neither team was able to score.  The teams went to the intermission with a scoreless tie.

In the second half, North Hills' Andrew Roberts  had an early chance but his header went over the NA goal just 50 seconds into play.  The Indians sent a pair of shots from long range over the next minute, but Severyn was there to make the saves.  The Indians would get very few opportunities from this point in the half.  At the 2:18 mark, senior forward Andrew McIlvried broke down the right side but his shot hit the right side of the net.  A minute later, McIlvried drove another shot from 18 yards on the right side that Gianella caught out of the air.  At the 10:03 mark, Bretz sent a shot from 15 yards that went over the net.  The Tigers finally broke through to take the lead with a determined attack on the NH goal.  Jergan had the first chance but his shot was blocked, and Echeverria sent the rebound off the crossbar.  Fulton was following up the play from the left side and drove the second rebound into the goal to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage at the 11:02 mark.  Fulton struck again a little over a minute later when he took a pass from Bretz and cleanly beat the NH goalie with a hard shot from just inside the 18.  North Hills came back and had a chance, but junior defender Evan Buysee made a good block of a shot from inside the box.  Derek Haig sent a long shot just wide of the NA goal from 20 yards away as the Indians tried to get back into the game.  Anthony Valeriano drove a direct kick toward the NA goal that Severyn snared out of the air at the 16:05 mark.  The Tigers answered a minute later when McCrory lifted a high shot from the left side that deflected off the right goal post into the net to give NA a commanding 3-0 later.  Junior Dane Bralich almost added another score when he sent a rebound right into the NH keeper just twenty seconds later.  The Tigers continued to keep up the offensive pressure with Bretz getting a chance from 30 yards at the midway point of the half.  The NA defense forced the Indians to shoot from long range for the remainder of the game with very few scoring chances.  With 11:09 left. Sharpnack sent a drive over the NH goal from 20 yards.  Bretz got off a good shot from 15 yards away at the 5:35 mark resulting in an NA corner kick that was not converted.  The Tigers had one last scoring chance with 1:13 remaining, but Jergan sent it over the NH goal.  Time ran out as the Tigers celebrated a 3-0 victory.

It was a good team victory by the Tigers with good defense, good play in goal, and a dominating offense.  NA piled up 10 corner kicks to just two for the visiting Indians.  For his scoring efforts and good overall play at midfield, the North Allegheny Sports Network named J.P. Fulton as the Player of the Game.

With the win, NA improved to 4-2-0 in section play and moved into a tie for second place with Seneca Valley.  The overall Tiger record improved to 6-4-0.  NA will host Norwin tomorrow night at Newman Stadium in a non-section contest.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:30 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 7:45 pm.

BUTLER EDGES TIGERS, 1-0

The Tigers dropped a 1-0 decision at Butler on Thursday night.  NA also picked up a win over Shaler in a game that was suspended earlier in the year.  It was ruled that the final minutes of that game would not have to be played and NA was awarded the 3-2 victory.

With the win and loss, the NA section record now stands at 2-2, the overall mark at 5-4.  NA will host North Hills tomorrow afternoon as part of SoccerFest at Newman Stadium.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 12:15 pm.  Game time is scheduled for 12:30 pm.

NORTH ALLEGHENY - 3  SHALER - 2

by Curt Soergel

For the second game in a row, the Tigers jumped out to an early lead.  Danny Crawford found J.P. Fulton between two defenders at the 18, and J.P. lofted a chip shot just beyond the reach of the Shaler keeper to put NA ahead 1-0 only 3 minutes and 13 seconds into the game.  Just over a minute later, the Tigers narrowly missed another goal when Fulton sent a crossing pass to Junior Israel Echeverria, whose shot was deflected at the last second but a Shaler defender, preventing NA from adding to its lead.  After that stop, Shaler quickly shifted play to the NA end, and wasted no time in leveling the score.  Shaler F Toshi Toto took advantage of a Tiger miscue and shot straight on into an empty net from 30 yards out at the 4:44 mark, drawing the Titans even at 1-1.  With just over 7 minutes gone, Raphael Bretz almost single-handedly put the Tigers back on top with a brilliant one-on-one move, stealing the ball from the Titan defender and whistling a shot just wide of the net.  Play went back and forth in the middle third for most of the next several minutes, until Shaler co-captain Corey Casper took a feed from Toto and chipped a shot over lunging NA keeper Mateo Carlini to put the Titans on top 2-1 at 14:02 into the half.  But the Tiger defense stiffened and Carlini – and his defense corps of Phil Briggs, Justin Kailer, Evan Buysse, and Tyler Migliozzi – would keep Shaler off the board the rest of the way.

Following the Casper goal, the Tigers came roaring back.  Bretz, Echeverria, and Senior Evan Cullen all narrowly missed scoring opportunities before the Tigers’ hard work finally paid off.  J.P. Fulton threaded the needle with a perfect through ball to Andrew McIlvreid, whose initial shot was batted away by the Shaler GK, but Israel Echeverria pounced on the rebound and buried it in the back of the net for his first varsity goal.  That tally came as the clock hit 24:33, knotting the score at 2-2.  But the Tigers offensive surge wasn’t finished.  At the 28:30 mark, Crawford took what appeared to be a rather innocent-looking pass from midfield partner Adam Sharpnack and unleashed a left-footed laser from 35 yards out the eluded the diving keeper to put NA back on top, 3-2.  Sharpnack, Junior Dylan Flaherty, and Senior Tim Zahren all had excellent opportunities in the waning minutes of the half, but the Shaler keeper was equal to the task.  As the horn sounded ending a high-scoring first half, the Tigers clung to a one goal lead.

The second half took a much more defensive – and physical – tone.  It wasn’t until the 11:10 mark that the first strong scoring opportunity presented itself.  J.P. Fulton rifled a cross from the right side that was punched away by the keeper just before a charging Tim Zahren could get his head on the ball.  Three minutes later, Bretz took a neat centering pass from Zach Jurgen and ripped a shot just outside the right post.  At about the 19 minute mark, the game became more physical.  After Junior D Evan Buysse made an acrobatic header off a Shaler direct kick, the Shaler attacker was whistled for a foul.  The Shaler bench protested the call so vigorously that the Assistant Coach was red-carded and ejected from the game.  Both defenses continued their strong play as the second half continued, nullifying scoring chances before they had a chance to develop.  In the 29th minute, the Shaler bench got its second card, a yellow to the Head Coach.  As the clock ticked inside the 30 minute mark of the half, Shaler’s co-captain Steve Hamilton launched a corner kick toward the NA goal.  Carlini made the initial save and stopped a rebound as well.  But as both teams tried frantically to gain control of the ball, physical play picked up and the game was suspended.

7TH GRADE SOCCER

by Gary TeKolste

The Tigers 7th grade boys soccer team traveled to Mars on Thursday to earn a well deserved 2-0 win over the Mars 8th grade team.  Mars controlled the early play but NA's defense, led by Player of the Game Drew Ruffolo and defenseman Zack Nimmo, was solid throughout the game.  The defense also benefited from the strong play of 8th grader, Suyash Fulay in goal who made several nice saves throughout the game.  The offense got going midway through the first half and with one minute left before intermission Sean Dickerson scored the first goal of the game on a shot from the top of the box.  Then at the 42nd minute in the second half, Ryan TeKolste scored on a nice assist from Nick Jewell, to give NA a two goal lead.  The win brings the teams' record to 2-0.  Next game for the team is Monday, September 22 at Butler.

TIGERS UPSET TOP-RANKED PINE-RICHLAND, 3-1

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

The Tigers scored twice early and held off #1 ranked Pine-Richland to earn a 3-1 victory at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  Senior MF J.P. Fulton and senior forward Raphael Bretz  tallied first half goals as NA took a 2-0 lead to the intermission.  Pine-Richland cut the margin to 2-1 early in the second half, but junior forward Zach Jergen's goal in the final minute put away the Rams.

The Tigers jumped off to a 1-0 lead on Fulton's goal just 3:54 into the contest.  Schweers scored in the thirteenth minute to increase the NA margin to 2-0.  The Tigers held a territorial edge for much of the half as they took the two-goal advantage to halftime.

In the second half, the Rams rallied to cut the lead in half.  Adam Horn scored in the sixth minute to make it a 2-1 lead.  Pine-Richland continued to pressure the NA defense throughout the second half. but the NA defense led by senior Justin Kailer and junior Evan Buysee was able to stop any Ram scoring chances.  In goal, senior Mateo Carlini aggressively halted P-R's long passes into the box.  With just 30 seconds left, Jergen put the finishing touch on the NA upset as the Tigers went on to win, 3-1.

It was a great effort by NA with the win over one of the top-ranked teams in the WPIAL.  For his efforts in the NA net, the North Allegheny Sports Network named Mateo Carlini as the Player of the Game.

With the win, the Tigers improved to 1-1 in section play, 4-3 overall.  The Tigers will travel to Butler tomorrow night to meet the Tornado in a 7:30 pm section contest.

TIGERS KNOCK OFF #6 PENN-TRAFFORD, 3-0

by John Fulton

The Tigers evened their record at 3-3 with a 3-0 victory over Penn-Trafford at Newman Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  In a contest that was played evenly throughout much of the 1st half, the Tigers dominated much of the 2nd half and scored in bunches to beat a very solid Penn Trafford team.  The Warriors had been ranked #6 by the MSA Sports Network and #8 by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The Warriors pressured early in the contest with possession play in the Tigers defensive third. At 1:30 Tyler Migliozzi cleared a potential scoring opportunity from the 6-yard box to keep the sheet clean. Raphael Bretz sent a fantastic ball into the box at 7:00 and found junior Israel Echeverria; however, the play was called back for offsides.  PT quickly organized and mounted a counterattack that was thwarted by Evan Buysee, who was able to run down the PT attacker to safely clear the ball at 8:45. Several minutes later, Echeverria pressured the PT defense resulting in a take away by JP Fulton who feinted right to blast a shot on goal that was stopped by the PT keeper. At 15:30 Mateo Carlini came up big with a save after the Warriors mounted an attack down the right wing. Fulton then made a big run along the right side to a streaking Andrew McIlvreid whose shot on goal was blocked by the keeper. At 21:00 Bretz switched fields to a rushing Evan Cullen along the left wing, who was forced over the touch line by the PT defense. Cullen then crossed a ball to Dylan Flaherty and found Bretz, who got a touch on the ball before it was cleared by a PT defender resulting in a corner kick. Bretz placed the ball in the box; Danny Crawford was able to control the ball, turn, and shot just wide of the net. At 27:00 Crawford served a great ball to Cullen who delivered a pass to Echeverria that resulted in a corner kick for the Tigers. Fulton’s serve found Echeverria whose header was deflected off the right post. A nice through ball by Andy Soergel to a racing Cullen along the left wing was intercepted by the PT defender. At 33:00 Buysee headed the ball to Bretz whose 1v1 challenge beat the PT midfielder. He delivered a ball to Echeverria who was met by an onrushing keeper at the 11 yard line to clear the attempt. A great tackle by Soergel kept the ball in the attacking half to end the 1st half square at a 0 – 0.

Although the Tigers offense came alive in the 2nd half, the defensive corps consisting of Phil Briggs, Justin Kailer, Buysee, and Migliozzi controlled the defensive third by offsetting the PT rushes. One minute into the 2nd half, NA connected a string of passes beginning with Soergel and ending with Flaherty driving a shot over the cross bar. Kailer then stopped a big run by the PT wing to clear a scoring threat at 4:30. Crawford sent a shot wide of the net from the 25 yard line to maintain pressure on the Warriors. Fulton pushed a through ball to Nick Basara, who made a big run along the left side only to be forced over the touch line by the PT defense. Basara then made a nice move to beat the PT defender to maintain possession in the attacking half. Sophomore Matt Baird’s through ball barely missed as Fulton was making a run through the midfield. Junior Shawn McCrorey received a cross from McIlvreid just missing the target at 24:00. Baird made a big tackle to maintain possession and the Tiger offense continued to press. Mike Severyn had to come up big at 26:18 making a diving save to stop a strike by the PT forward. The Tiger offense began to set the tone at the 26 minute mark when Fulton chested a ball at midfield finding Bretz sweeping down the left side; Bretz dropped the ball to Fulton who was taken down outside the 18. On the set play Bretz drove a shot into the keeper. A loose ball and take down by the keeper on Fulton, who was attempting to make a turn, resulted in a penalty kick. Fulton set the ball and drove in the first goal of the afternoon into the side triangle at 29:40 (NA 1 – PT 0). The Warriors moved the ball quickly by forcing a corner kick. Severyn came up big once again by picking up the ball infront of a scrum that ensued from the kick. At 33:00 Fulton found Bretz on a throw-in at the 15 yard line; Bretz was able to beat the defender and drive the ball past the PT keeper for the second goal of the content (NA 2 – PT 0). Five minutes later Tim Zahren was able to control a ball placed in the box, make a turn and force a corner kick. Fulton’s corner kick found a diving Echeverria, whose header was spot on to beat the PT keeper to make it NA 3 – PT 0 at 35:00. The NA defense maintained its strangle hold on the PT attackers. Crawford made a big tackle to stop a rush at 37:00. With :25 remaining, Kailer cleared an attempt to assure a clean sheet.

The Tigers next contest is a section showdown against the WPIAL’s No. 1 ranked team, Pine Richland.  The North Allegheny Sports Network will be there to broadcast the game LIVE on the internet beginning with the pre-game show at 7:30.  Game time is scheduled for 7:45 pm.

SENECA VALLEY HOLDS OFF TIGERS,
2-1, IN SECTION OPENER

To listen to a replay of the game, click here!

After senior Danny Crawford had given NA a 1-0 lead early, the Seneca Valley Raiders answered with a pair of first half goals on their way to a 2-1 victory over the Tigers in the section opener at Newman Stadium on Tuesday night.  NA held a territorial edge for most of the night but could not score again.

The Tigers struck quickly to take a 1-0 lead.  Senior midfielder J.P. Fulton sent in a direct kick from just outside the 18 that was headed into the goal by Crawford just 3:09 into the contest.  The Raiders came back a minute with all-section forward Kevin Andreone racing into the NA third, but Tiger junior GK Mike Severyn beat the speedy forward to the ball in the box.  At the 7:33 mark, Andreone was pulled down in the box with Seneca being awarded a penalty kick.  Senior MF Conor Azevedo converted for the Raiders to tie the score at 1-1.  The goal seemed to energize Seneca Valley as Andreone got another good chance less than a minute later but sent the ball over the NA net.  The Tigers had a chance when senior MF Raphael Bretz broke into the box but slipped on his left-footed attempt allowing Seneca GK Justin McAtee to make the save at the 9:26 mark.  Seneca's Jon Baron broke down the middle two minutes later but his shot hit the football upright behind the NA goal.  An NA corner kick at the 13:50 mark was headed wide, and Fulton had a chance in the penalty area but his shot was covered by McAtee.  At the 17:53 mark, the Tigers were guilty of another penalty, this time just outside the box.  Austin Smith made NA pay when he converted a direct kick from 20 yards away to give the Raiders a 2-1 advantage.  Four minutes later, Fulton sent a hard shot from 25 yards that McAtee stopped.  Bretz had two opportunities in the next five minutes.  With 12:33 remaining, his header went wide, and with 7:20 left, his shot went over the goal after a corner kick.  The Tigers had two more corner kicks in the last seven minutes but could not convert.  The teams went to the intermission with Seneca Valley holding a 2-1 advantage.

Early in the second half, Bretz raced after a loose ball in the Seneca penalty area but McAtee made a diving stop.  In the second minute, senior forward Andrew McIlvried sent a cross into the box that McAtee came out and caught.  McIlvried tried again five minutes later but the bouncing ball in the box was finally covered by McAtee.  Junior Israel Echeverria came off the NA bench and had a chance in front of the SV net but could not finish.  At the 8:17 mark, Baron countered for the Raiders with a shot from 20 yards that just missed wide of the NA goal.  The Tigers came back with two good chances. Senior MF Adam Sharpnack sent a hard shot over the Seneca net from 20 yards away at the 9:57 mark.  Two minutes later, McIlvried drove another cross that McAtee had to come out and pull out of the air.  At the 14:23 mark, Seneca put the ball into the NA net but were called for offsides.  Just past the midway point of the second half, Crawford drove a hard shot along the ground that McAtee stopped on a good save.  Less than a minute later, McIlvried continued to work the right side sending a high ball toward the goal that McAtee bobbled, dropped and fell on.  With 16:14 left, McAtee allowed another rebound that was loose in front of the goal, but the Raider defense was able to just clear the ball over the goal line.  On the ensuing corner kick, the Tigers sent a header wide of the net.  Two minutes later, Sharpnack drove a cross into the box that McAtee again had to catch on the fly.  The Tigers continued to pressure the SV defense for the remainder of the game but could not score.  A corner kick with 10:49 left was not converted.  With 8:20 left, Bretz sent a hard shot from 24 yards away that McAtee knocked down, but the Tigers lifted the rebound over the goal.  Another corner kick with 5:35 remaining came up empty.  NA had a final attempt at the equalizer with 4:12 left, but Bretz sent a hard shot wide of the net from 25 yards away.  In the final minutes, the Raiders were able to stop all NA offensive attempts as they preserved the 2-1 victory.

It was a tough loss for the Tigers as the dominated play for most of the evening.  Two fouls allowed the Raiders two scoring chances that they converted while NA was frustrated at the offensive end.  The Tigers earned seven corner kicks to just one for Seneca.  For his play at midfield and in directing the NA offense, the North Allegheny Sports Network selected senior J.P. Fulton as the Player of the Game.

The loss in the section opener dropped the NA section record to 0-1, the overall mark to 2-3.  The Tigers will travel to Shaler tomorrow night to meet the Titans in a 7:30 pm section contest.

TIGERS BLANK HOWLAND, 4-0, FOR SECOND WIN

by John Fulton

The Tigers traveled to Howland (OH) on Tuesday night and came home with a 4-0 victory.  The win avenged last year's loss to the Ohio team.

Howland had the better of play early as junior Mike Severyn was tested in goal and came up big with a save at 1:30 into the contest. The momentum began to change with a corner kick by senior JP Fulton when he found senior Adam Sharpnack who pushed the ball just wide of the net at 7:30. At 16:40 Sharpnack pushed a through ball to junior Shawn McCrorey who knocked home the first goal of the evening. A big rush by Howland was thwarted by senior Justin Kailer, who made a clearing tackle along the right side at 23:30. At 27:00 Fulton placed a through ball to McCrorey, who was met by the Howland keeper for the save. NA continued to pressure as senior Nick Basara placed the ball into the box to junior Dylan Flaherty who chipped the ball over the crossbar at 35:00. Howland countered with pressure at 2:30 but were turned away by senior Peter Schweers who cleared the ball to end the half with NA leading 1-0.

The beginning of the second half was a repeat as Howland pressured early. Senior Mateo Carlini came off his line to make a diving save to keep Howland off the scoreboard. At 15:30 junior Andy Soergel pushed the ball up the right to senior Raphael Bretz, who switched the ball to the left side to a rushing senior Evan Cullen, who drove home the second goal of the evening to put NA in front 2-0. At 17:00 senior Danny Crawford placed a through ball to McCrorey who notched his second goal of the evening making it 3-0. The NA Tigers continued to pressure when junior Takamasa Tobiata played a ball to senior Andrew McIlvried who drove the ball just wide of the net from the 18-yard line; however, Howland counterattacked at 30:00 along the left side of the NA defense when senior Tyler Migliozzi made a clearance to stop their rush. At 35:00 Schweers drove a direct kick into the box that was headed by a Howland defender resulting in an own goal putting the Tigers ahead 4-0.

The Tigers will travel to Mars on Saturday night for another non-section game as they get ready for league play that will begin next week.  Game time at Mars on Saturday is set for 7:00 pm.

TIGERS SPLIT PAIR OF GAMES OVER WEEKEND

Photo Gallery

The Tigers got off to a good start with a resounding 8-0 victory at Woodland Hills on Friday afternoon.  On Saturday morning, the Hampton Talbots edged NA, 1-0, at Hampton to even the Tiger record at 1-1 in the early non-section contests.

GAME SUMMARY
NORTH ALLEGHENY - 8  WOODLAND HILLS -0

by Pedro Bretz

The North Allegheny Tigers traveled to the Wolvarena on August 29 for their first content of the 2008 season and came away with a convincing 8-0 victory over the Woodland Hills Wolverines.

The Tigers carried the play most of the day. At 2:00 Raphael Bretz set up on a direct kick from outside the 18-yard line and pushed the ball to JP Fulton who drove the ball past the Woodland Hills keeper for the first goal (1-0) of the evening.  At 10:00 North Allegheny continued to pressure when Fulton slipped past the Wolverines defense and shot the ball past the goalie for his second goal (2-0 unassisted) of the contest. The pressure continued to mount when Andrew McIlvried notched the third goal (3-0) after receiving a nice drop ball from Bretz at 34:00. One minute later, Fulton directed a cross to Justin Kailer, who drove the ball past the keeper for a goal (4-0). At 37:00 Fulton set up on a corner kick and dropped the ball into the box where Peter Schweers headed home the fifth goal of the night (5-0). Andy Soergel then blasted a shot on goal, but a fantastic save by the Woodland Hills keeper prevented a score. The Wolverines mounted a counterattack only to be turned away by Mateo Carlini, who made an acrobatic save to keep the sheet clear. Nick Basara ended the first half with a shot off the post.

Three minutes into the second half, Woodland Hills recorded their second shot on goal. North Allegheny regained its focus when Danny Crawford sent a shot off the post at 6:00. The boys continued to pressure when Dylan Flaherty blasted a shot off the post at 7:00. Bretz was awarded a penalty kick at 11:00 and drove the ball to the back of the net for the sixth goal (6-0) of the night. The Tigers continued to dominate play when McIlvried made an unassisted run and shot on goal to put the boys up 7-0 at the 21:00 mark. Five minutes later at 26:00 Matt Baird pushed a corner kick past the keeper for the eighth (8-0) and last tally of the evening.
